Toowoomba Tips – December 28

Race 3 – 5:40PM BLACK & WHITE CABS Class 4 Handicap (1210 METRES)
Coming off a very impressive first-up win, OUR TOP SHELF showed his opposition no mercy whatsoever at Dalby and he looks well placed here to do the same. Resuming from a 22-week spell, he lined up against Class 3 company at Dalby and despite drifting back to the tail end of the field, he stormed home on fresh legs post a dominating win over 1200m, putting almost four lengths on them. His time of 1:09 flat was also impressive after such a long break. Winning jockey Les Tilley remains aboard here and with a similar attitude, he should prove very hard to hold out again.

Race 4 – 6:15PM FURNEYS BENCHMARK 62 Handicap (1880 METRES)
Records were made to be broken and that’s exactly what ERROL will have to do here if he is to figure in the finish. The seven-year-old has won just four of his 31 starts but when he is in form, it’s best to strike while the iron is hot. Last start he was second-up after a lengthy 33-week break and surprised many with a two-length win here in a BM58 over 1800m, coming from last in the event. Although up slightly in grade, he still looks well placed in this field with Josh Oliver remaining aboard, he will get every chance to go back-to-back here. If his brings that last start effort with him, his poor third-up record can change for the better.

Race 7 – 8:02PM K&R PLUMBING SUPPLIES QTIS Three-Years-Old Maiden Handicap (1210 METRES)
Locally-trained by Kevin Kemp, NAVAL STRIKE returns to his home track with a just one goal, to finally break his maiden status. His past two starts on the track resulted in minor prizes before heading to the city where last start, (although beaten a fair way) he finished a solid second (of 11) over the Doomben 1350m trip. He came from back in the field on that day and hit the line well, despite not being a winning chance in the race. He lines up here with four starts under his belt in this preparation and should be at peak fitness for this. After the claim, he carries a little less than last start and will surely find this test a bit easier. The Smart Missile gelding looks the one to beat here.

Previous Tips:

December 21

Race 1 – 4:56PM FURNEYS Class 1 Handicap (1000 METRES)
Locally-trained by Jackie Crompton, ICED is yet to run a bad race and looks perfectly placed here to make two in a row. The Better Than Ready gelding rana string of five minor placings at his first five runs before breaking through last start, here on his home track. With Skye Bogenhuber aboard, the three-year-old drew the outside gate (10) where he crossed to eventually lead and was never headed from there. He carried 59kgs that day and conceded 5kgs to the minor placegetters. He has drawn much better in gate three here and has Bogenhuber on his back again, and if he brings that last-start form here, he will prove mighty hard to run down.
Result (3rd – $1.60 to Place)
Race 2 – 5:40PM QUEENSLAND ELECTRICAL SOLUTIONS BENCHMARK 72 Handicap (1110 METRES)
The Lindsay Hatch-trained mare PIERIDAE is in sensational form of late, finishing top-two in all six starts this preparation. Beautifully bred, by Hinchinbrook out of a Redoute’s Choice mare, she won back-to-back races here when second and third-up before coming across a smart one in Rock Beat where she filled the quinella there. She then bounced back and won a Class 4 here two starts back before starting a short-priced favourite in the Texas Cup, only to be beaten the by the Matt Cropp-trained Scrabble. Back to her home track here where she is four and four from ten starts, if she can overcome the wide draw, she will again prove the one to beat.
Result (unplaced)
Race 6 – 8:15PM TOOWOOMBA TRUCK SPARES Class 3 Handicap (1050 METRES)
A small field here should suit the Stephen Kirkwood-trained DEEP MELODY who looks well placed at the weights. Resuming from a six-month break, the talented filly beat all but For My Annie home here in a Class 1 over 1000m. Kirkwood then took her to Gatton where second-up, she jumped in front and was never headed, winning the 870m sprint by half a length on the line. After Adin Thompson’s claim, she drops 4.5kgs here and with the light weight, she may prove too quick for this field.
Result (1st – $1.50)

December 14

Race 3 – 6:21PM MURRAY ARTHUR Class 3 Plate (1200 METRES)
Formerly trained by Kris Lees, MOSCINI didn’t take long to settle into his new home,  winning his first start for new trainer Dale Groves. Coming off a nine-week break, the well-bred son of Mossman missed the jump here last start and settled well-back before finishing powerfully to overrun the leaders and take the prize in a Class 2 over 1100m. He has enjoyed a three-week let-up since then and drawn the fence here. With Ronnie Goltz retaining the ride, he should prove hard to hold out again.
Result (unplaced)

Race 4 – 6:57PM PAUL WALLACE BENCHMARK 58 Handicap (1850 METRES)
Finishing top-two at her past four starts, IN YOUR ELEMENT is at the top of her game and looks the testing material here. After wins in Class 5 and Class 4 company on this track, the Red Element mare then fell inches short in another Class 4 over 2175m here two starts back. She then one smarter last start when finishing second behind Missed The Alarm at the Gold Coast over 2200m. She drops back to the 1850m journey here and down slightly in grade as well. She is a two-time winner here and Madeleine Wishart remains aboard for the ride. Well drawn and nicely weighted, she should be finishing strongly here again.
Result (2nd – $1.30 to Place)

Race 5 – 7:35PM MANDY ROBBINS Maiden Plate (1625 METRES)
Still a maiden after nine starts, STEADY STAR gets his chance to break through here. Another from the Dale Groves stable, the nicely-bred Zoustar gelding has been ‘all over the shop’ with his form. However, his latest effort suggests he just may be ready to show his best here. Last start, he was third-up off a 13-week spell, and in the run home he was travelling better than any, reeling in the front runners to finish second on the line behind Iberian Lace. He was doing his best work over the final 200 metres so the step up to 1625m here can only benefit him. It’s not a strong field and given a good start and sit behind the pace, he could be the one they have to worry about in the run home.
Result (2nd – $1.50 to Place)

December 7

Race 1 – 4:43PM AXIOM INSURANCE BROKERS Class 2 Handicap (1300 METRES)
Formerly with the Mark Newnham stable, MILLEN FALCON has come to town and now resides at the local stables of Matt Boland. All four of his career starts have been here at Clifford Park where he has recorded two wins and as many minor placings. On debut, he won his maiden with ease, although covering the 1200m in a slow 1:13.6, he managed to put 2.5 lengths on the field in the process. Last start he brought up win number two with a close result in BM58 company over 1300m. He steps up to Class 2 company here but after the claim, will carry just 55kgs over the 1300m trip. Noriyuki Masuda is the only rider to have sat on him to date and he remains aboard again. Drawn ideally in gate three, he will take some beating here.
Result (4th)

Race 3 – 5:55PM HARVEY NORMAN COMMERCIAL TOOWOOMBA BENCHMARK 68 Handicap (1100 METRES)
Track specialist BELLA OCCHI looks ideally placed here to bounce back to her best third-up. Back after a four-month break, she has been nailed on the line at both of her runs this time in. Two starts back, she took over passing the 200m mark but was run down over the final 50 metres by Cambooya Rock over the 870m sprint on this track. Then last start, she ran around here again but was again headed by one better on the day, finishing second to smart mare, Love You Lucy in a BM70 over the longer 1110m trip. Down slightly in grade here, she will strip fitter from those two runs and should prove a handful here again.
Result (unplaced)

Race 4 – 6:30PM JOE WAGNER GROUP Class 3 Handicap (1625 METRES)
Locally-trained by Jason Gregory, THE IRONS will be out to avenge his last start beating. With a resume very similar to Tom Melbourne, the five-year-old boasts no less than six runner-up finishes in his 26-start career, with three of those coming from his past four starts. After finishing second at the Sunshine Coast and then the Gold Coast, he broke the trend with a fourth placing here behind Deladies Boy in a Class 3 over the mile. Then last start, it was back to bridesmaid’s trophies when finishing second to Toga Picta in a harder Class 4 affair, also at Clifford Park. Back to Class 3 company here, and in a reduced field (after early scratchings) he gets another chance to break the drought.
Result (3rd – NTD)
