Overview
Colleano beat Hot Digity Boom and Toranaga over 1400m at Townsville on 4 October, and on Sunday those three horses split up across the card with very different tasks ahead of them. Colleano drops back to 1200m in Race 3 with roughly 54kg on its back, about five kilos less than it carried that day. Hot Digity Boom meets it again after winning at Cairns since. Toranaga goes to the Bm65 in Race 6 and keeps running into the frame without winning.
That result is the thread running through these Townsville racing tips. Eight races are set for a Good to Soft surface, starting at 12:55PM with a short 3yo handicap and finishing with a Bm70 sprint at 5:00PM. Only the first two races had bookmaker prices up when this went to print, so the odds quoted below come from those two markets. Further down you’ll find the course form that matters, a race-by-race read, and the five plays I’d actually put money on.
Reading the Townsville card
For once there’s real course depth to work with. Several of Sunday’s runners have raced here plenty, and a few of them have strong records.
| Horse | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boom Bunny | 10 | 2 | 7 | 20.0 | 70.0 |
| Toranaga | 9 | 3 | 6 | 33.3 | 66.7 |
| Cifonelli | 8 | 2 | 6 | 25.0 | 75.0 |
| Overland | 8 | 1 | 5 | 12.5 | 62.5 |
| Ellis Beach | 8 | 2 | 4 | 25.0 | 50.0 |
| Looming One | 12 | 1 | 6 | 8.3 | 50.0 |
The riding ranks are led by two names. R Wiggins has 32 winners from 143 rides here, and B Kennedy finishes in the first three on more than half of his Townsville mounts.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| B Kennedy | 62 | 13 | 32 | 21.0 | 51.6 |
| R Wiggins | 143 | 32 | 68 | 22.4 | 47.6 |
| Aidan Holt | 134 | 19 | 55 | 14.2 | 41.0 |
| Ashley Butler | 32 | 5 | 12 | 15.6 | 37.5 |
| Adam Sewell | 113 | 9 | 34 | 8.0 | 30.1 |
Georgie Holt is the trainer with the volume, 26 winners from 138 starters here, and she has a team spread through the card. Terry Mcgovern has the sharper strike rate from a smaller sample.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Terry Mcgovern | 43 | 11 | 23 | 25.6 | 53.5 |
| William Kenning | 45 | 6 | 24 | 13.3 | 53.3 |
| Georgie Holt | 138 | 26 | 62 | 18.8 | 44.9 |
| S J Royes | 99 | 15 | 44 | 15.2 | 44.4 |
| T Button | 88 | 16 | 37 | 18.2 | 42.0 |

Townsville race-by-race tips and predictions
Race 1: Ladbrokes Tote Win +10% In October Hcp, 12:55PM, 1000m
The market has Bowdene a clear favourite at 1.90 with Bet Right, and on its record here that makes sense: one Townsville start, one win. The catch is the gap. Bowdene hasn’t raced since finishing ninth of 16 at Eagle Farm in June, so this is a first-up assignment with 58.5kg.
Far And Wide is the one I want. It won on debut over 1200m here on 8 September, then ran second at 8/5 ten days later, and those are its only two starts. Both came at this track. Barrier 2 should let it hold a spot without working. Stylish Diamond, also trained by Kris Hansen, has the consistent profile with no worse than third in its last four, and that makes it the place threat.
At 2.50 with Unibet, Far And Wide is the better side of a two-horse market. Win bet.
Race 2: The Ville Mdn Plate, 1:30PM, 1400m
Fourteen maidens are left after the scratchings, and most of the field has already been beaten here. Queen Of Russia is the one still heading the right way. It ran third at Bowen in September and third again over 1200m here on 4 October, and Georgie Holt now adds R Wiggins and a step up to 1400m. That looks like a deliberate plan.
Barrier 16 is the problem. Wiggins will need to find cover early or this becomes a long way around.
Moonya Lad is the obvious danger and the steadier bet. It has four placings from five runs since late July, including second at Ewan and fourth over the mile here last time, and B Kennedy stays aboard. That profile keeps finding a way into the first three without winning. Blazing Future finished one spot behind Queen Of Russia on 4 October and doesn’t have much to find on that run.
Queen Of Russia to win at 3.40 with Unibet, with Moonya Lad at 4.20 with Unibet the each-way alternative.
Race 3: Vale Mervyn Milton Hcp, 2:05PM, 1200m
Colleano has done everything right since late August: a win at Cairns, fourth in the Horse of the Year Hcp here, then a win over 1400m on 4 October at 5/1 with Aidan Holt aboard. It carried about 59kg that day. On Sunday it has roughly 54kg. A horse in that kind of form with five kilos less weight is exactly what I want to be on.
Ashley Butler takes the ride. Butler and Georgie Holt have teamed up 14 times at Townsville for four wins, and Butler rode Colleano to its Cairns win in August. Barrier 2 is a bonus over the shorter trip.
Hot Digity Boom is the clear danger. It ran second to Colleano on 4 October and then won at Cairns a week later at 9/10, so it arrives in form and with B Kennedy riding. Northern Pride won the Horse of the Year Hcp at 16/1 when Colleano was fourth, but it carries about 61kg here, top weight. Turn Bird ran second in that race and again at Cairns, so it’s a frame chance.
No market yet. Colleano is the bet of the day: win, with a saver quinella to Hot Digity Boom.
Race 4: Georgina Holt – 2026 Trainer Of The Year Hcp (55), 2:40PM, 1609m
Can Overland back up after finally breaking its maiden? That’s the question here. It won over this mile on 4 October at 29/10, after a second over the same trip in September and another second over 1400m before that. R Wiggins has ridden it in every run I can find, and it has finished in the first three in five of its last six.
The worry is Sneaky Peaky. When the pair met over this course and distance on 18 September, Sneaky Peaky won at 9/1 and Overland ran second at 8/5. They meet again with Sneaky Peaky carrying about half a kilo more, though its form either side of that win is patchy, with one placing from five runs in the last three months.
Mayor Of Kingston has been the busiest of these, placing six times from seven starts in that window and winning at Cloncurry on 9 October. Barrier 2 suits it. Overland is drawn 11, so it may have to go back.
Overland is the safest horse on the card for multis. Win and place, with Mayor Of Kingston in the exotics.
Race 5: Ryan Wiggins – 2026 Jockey Of The Year (Bm55), 3:15PM, 1000m
Two horses, two different profiles, and the weights decide it. Boom Bunny is the track horse: seven placings from ten Townsville starts, including wins over this 1000m on 8 August and 30 August. Spiritof The Ocean has only been here twice, but it ran second both times, the latest of them on 4 October when Boom Bunny ran fourth.
That last meeting is the case against Boom Bunny. The case for it is that it has been placed in four of five runs since July, Terry Mcgovern places more than half of his runners here, and C Whiteley has barrier 3. Spiritof The Ocean also goes up about three and a half kilos from that run, to roughly 57.5kg. Boom Bunny rises too, so the gap between them is narrower than it was.
Looming One is a 12-start course horse that won here at 20/1 in September and should not be dismissed off a bad last start. Boom Bunny, win.
Race 6: Fiona Sandkuhl – 2026 Apprentice Jockey Of The Year (Bm65), 3:50PM, 1400m
Toranaga keeps knocking on the door. Since late August it has run second in the Daintree Guineas at Cairns at 30/1, second over this 1400m here in a field of 19, and third behind Colleano at 2/1 on 4 October. Four placings from its last five, and three wins from nine Townsville starts overall. I Fry has been aboard for most of that run of form.
The weight is the question. Toranaga carried about 54.5kg last time and has roughly 59kg now.
Intruder is Mitch Goring’s regular ride and has placed three times in four runs since July. Ellis Beach, Georgie Holt’s top weight, has two Townsville wins but has not won since July. Toranaga each-way is the play here: it finishes in the first three too often to leave out.
Race 7: Racing On Melbourne Cup Day Hcp (C1), 4:25PM, 1200m
The 4 October maiden over this trip is the form race. Belinda’s Rubi won it at 5/1, Queen Of Russia ran third and Blazing Future fourth. That was Belinda’s Rubi‘s first win from six Townsville starts. Now it gets W d’Avila and barrier 1 in a Class 1, which is the natural next step.
Heathcliff has the top weight and has done most of its racing in New South Wales. It won a country boosted race at Muswellbrook in July and was beaten as favourite twice after that before a seventh at Cloncurry, so it’s capable but not reliable. Ceretti won a maiden at Bowen in September in which Belinda’s Rubi finished ninth, which is a warning sign. Belinda’s Rubi has the stronger recent form.
Belinda’s Rubi, win, with Heathcliff the saver.
Race 8: Ladbrokes (Bm70), 5:00PM, 1000m
Latin Boss is the form horse of the meeting. Its form line ends 1-1-1, and the two most recent wins came over 1000m here on 8 September at 5/1 and at Ewan on 26 September at 3/2. Before that it ran second at 30/1 over this distance in August. N Thomas has ridden it in all of those. Barrier 11 isn’t ideal.
Hartshorn won here over 1000m on 4 October at even money, but it carried about 54kg that day. It has around 61.5kg now and a new rider. Cifonelli has six placings from eight runs at this track but hasn’t raced since 1 August.
Latin Boss to win. A last-race bet on a horse that keeps winning.

Where the money goes
NAP: Colleano (Race 3, 2:05PM). It beat the right horses over 1400m two weeks ago and now drops about five kilos and 200 metres. Ashley Butler knows the horse and has won on it.
Value: Far And Wide (Race 1, 12:55PM). At 2.50 with Unibet against a favourite resuming after four months. Both of its starts here produced a win and a second.
Banker: Overland (Race 4, 2:40PM). Five placings from six runs in the last three months and a win over this exact trip last start. Multis start here.
Each-way: Toranaga (Race 6, 3:50PM). Second, second and third in its last three, and six placings from nine Townsville starts.
Course angle: The 4 October 1400m handicap. Colleano won it, Hot Digity Boom ran second and Toranaga third, and Hot Digity Boom has won since. That race has already thrown up a winner since, and all three of its placegetters run on Sunday.
If Colleano wins with this much weight off, expect the handicapper to make Georgie Holt’s next Townsville placing much harder.
