GOLDEN ROSE BETTING SNAPSHOT

Cylinder is the $4 favourite for the Golden Rose with Picklebet, just ahead of the Golden Slipper (1200m) winner, Shinzo, at $5.50. The Victorian filly, Charm Stone, is at $6, while King Colorado ($6.75) and Militarize ($9.50) are others under double figures. 

There are 13 contenders for the $1 million race and Encap is at $10, while Moravia ($14) and Libertad ($16) are also in the market. Nadal heads the rest at $23. 

GOLDEN ROSE FORM ANALYSIS

Eight of the 13 gallopers had their most recent start in the Run To The Rose and it was Cylinder that backed up his Vain Stakes (1100m) win at Caulfield by arriving in time to defeat Moravia. The son of Exceed And Excel settled midfield that day and was held up from the 400m until the 150m before prevailing late. 

He went 5.7 lengths faster than standard benchmark in the Run To The Rose. Third up at his last preparation, the Godolphin galloper improved two lengths on figures to finish runner-up in the Golden Slipper (1200m) before failing on a Heavy 9 in the Sires Produce. 

Moravia led in the Run To The Rose, while the 3rd placegetter, Nadal, settled back and overcame trouble before running on for 3rd, beaten less than half a length. Butch Cassidy ran 4th and Militarize produced the fastest last 200m to finish 5th, beaten less than a length. 

Militarize is one that should improve out to the 1400m and comes into this second up. He has had one start at the distance for a four length win in the Sires Produce Stakes earlier this year, before going on to claim the Champagne Stakes (1600m). The Chris Waller-trained galloper gets the steer from Joao Moreira, who will be riding at some of the feature meetings during the carnival. 

Others to come out of the Run To The Rose are General Salute (6th), Don Corleone (7th) and Libertad (8th). All were within two lengths of the winner. General Salute and Don Corleone both did it tough out wide and have some scope for improvement. 

Shinzo resumes from his successful Golden Slipper campaign and is yet to finish behind any of these horses in his three career runs. The stablemate of Militarize gets the services of another international jockey in the form of Ryan Moore and comes in with two trials under his belt, winning the most recent of those. 

The son of Snitzel improved throughout his last campaign to go a healthy 9.5 lengths faster than standard benchmark to win the Slipper. Any growth since then and he should be hard to beat. 

King Colorado is one of two from the Maher/Eustace stable and comes back to his own age after finishing an unlucky 9th when resuming in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m). He never really saw daylight in that run and was just over two lengths from Fangirl at the finish. 

Charm Stone comes up from Melbourne and is the only filly in the race. She has won three of five, including both of her runs this time in. The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained galloper went 9.7 lengths faster than standard when resuming before being posted wide without cover at Moonee Valley last time to score from Inhibitions. She looks to be the real deal.

Encap is another promising type and went 9.7 lengths faster than standard benchmark to score at Rosehill on September 9 at the track and trip. He is right in the mix on that effort. The other horse in the field is Snapback, who will need to produce a huge personal best to feature here. 

GOLDEN ROSE TIPS AND BEST BETS

This is a high quality field and the majority have been producing excellent figures in the respective lead up races. Chris Waller is after his third Golden Rose trophy having won in 2013 with Zoustar and 2018 with The Autumn Sun and I am keen on his two chances here. Shinzo is a bit of an unknown at his first run back and the market will be the best guide. Militarize was one of the better runs in the recent Run To The Rose and is proven at the 1400m at this level.
