Race 1: Brandt Mdn Plate — 1:00pm, 1203m
Jadzia has been building toward this. A second-up placing followed by a fifth doesn’t scream improvement on paper, but she’s drawn to get a workable trail from barrier four, Jordan Childs takes the ride, and G M Begg’s stable wins more than a third of what it sends to this track. That combination of jockey and trainer form is hard to find elsewhere in this field. The one to worry about is Blue Suede Shoes, a first starter for Nick Ryan, whose 23.5% win rate and 58.8% place rate at Ballarat are as good as any trainer’s with genuine numbers, and Jye Mcneil doesn’t get on debutants without cause. There’s no formline to lean on for the newcomer, so Jadzia is the win bet, with Blue Suede Shoes an automatic include in exotics.

Is there a confident view to be had in a twelve-horse maiden with barely a placing between them? Not really. Ottalaus is the one with the most recent encouragement, a runner-up finish last start after a string of finishes further back, and Zac Spain gets the leg-up again. Silver Capital has also flashed ability without winning. Neither has done enough to trust with real money. If forced, Ottalaus gets the nod purely for that last-start placing, but this is a watch race more than a betting race.
Race 3: Hertz Mdn Plate — 2:00pm, 1640m
M Price and M Kent Jnr don’t send one to Ballarat without giving it a chance, and Aubaine’s placement in this longer maiden says as much. Two runs, two seconds, and this filly looks primed to go one better, the stretch out to 1640m should suit a horse building through her runs rather than sprinting home, and four of this stable’s last eleven Ballarat runners have gone on to place. Expensive Taste is the danger, having placed in both of her runs at this track even if her most recent effort read as a step backward. Win bet on Aubaine. If you need a second leg for the exotics, Expensive Taste holds enough course affinity to include.
Race 4: Global Turf Mdn Plate — 2:30pm, 1312m
Platinum Rush grinds; Isle Of Mona sprints. Platinum Rush has never finished worse than second in three runs at this circuit, runner-up in each of her last two, the profile of a horse doing everything but win. Isle Of Mona’s most recent run was also a runner-up finish, but from just three starts total, she hasn’t built the same weight of course evidence Platinum Rush is carrying into this one. In a fourteen-horse maiden field this size, the safer read is the horse with the deeper file of evidence. Back Platinum Rush each-way, and treat Isle Of Mona as no more than a token place saver.
Race 5: Blue Pyrenees Estate (Bm56) — 3:00pm, 1312m
Ten runners load into this benchmark and nothing stands out as the obvious speed, which should suit horses who can sit off a genuine tempo rather than lead it themselves. Love Symbol fits that description, comes off a placing last start, and picks up John Allen, who has piled up more rides, wins and placings at this track than anyone else in the colours today. Endless Forevers is the each-way risk, also placing last start but with less depth of course form behind her. Love Symbol each-way, with the John Allen booking the reason to trust it over a similar formline elsewhere in the race.
Race 6: Manhari (Bm56) — 3:30pm, 1531m
Chris Maher already sends more runners through this track than any other stable on the books, and Justibella is carrying his best case today. She steps up from a maiden win into benchmark company off the back of three straight Ballarat starts without missing the frame once, exactly the kind of test a genuine improver should handle, and the extra distance out to 1531m looks tailor-made for a filly still building through her races rather than one relying purely on speed. His stable has sent 68 runners through this track and placed better than half of them, the deepest and most successful book of anyone on today’s card. The danger is Isdell, a genuine course performer with two wins and three placings from four runs at Ballarat, and 40% wins and 60% places across his last five runs anywhere. Teodore Nugent, on 16.2% wins and 37.8% places at this track, takes the ride. Sacramental also arrives having won last start, though his placing rate over his last three runs sits well below the top two. This is the best betting race on the card. Race 7: Hygain Edge (Bm56) — 4:00pm, 1531m
Does Egerton Reef’s breakthrough hold up now that the assignment gets harder? He broke through last start after a run of minor placings, and John Allen, this track’s busiest and most successful rider by total winners, stays aboard for the step up in grade. That combination is enough to take seriously even with only two runs of course form to draw on. Royal Infantry is the one standing in the way, runner-up in each of his last two starts, and a trainer in P Kearney who places three in ten at this track. Back Egerton Reef, and treat Royal Infantry as the safer money if you’re only after a place.
Race 8: Sportsbet Blackbook (Bm70) — 4:30pm, 1312m
Miss Mahjong never misses the frame; Wicked Storm never had a stable so hot behind him. Miss Mahjong has placed in all three of her Ballarat starts, won last time out, and her last three runs anywhere have averaged a winning position. Trainer Matthew Cumani places better than half his runners at this track, and that consistency is hard to argue with in the season’s benchmark grade. Wicked Storm also won last start and carries the single best trainer number on the entire card, Patrick Payne wins half of his Ballarat runners and places nearly two-thirds.
