Ballina Racing Tips 28 April 2026 — can Dunn stack the quaddie?

There’s one stable that keeps popping up on this Ballina program, and it’s not subtle. M J Dunn brings a little team, spreads them across the key races, and does it off a real sample at this track: 19 runners here for 4 wins and 12 placings. That is the sort of strike that turns a normal country card into a proper punting meeting, because it gives you a clear anchor for multis and a clear target for taking on when the map turns against them.

We’ve got four races on turf, with a sprint maiden to kick us off and a middle distance Class 1 that looks the best betting race on the card. These Ballina racing tips lean into what matters today: barrier positions that decide who gets the cheap run, horses that are actually trending the right way (not just “can run”), and riders who repeatedly get it right here. If you’ve only got five minutes, skim to Race 2 and build from there.

Ballina — the setup

Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners either haven’t seen Ballina or have only one visit, so treat the track stats as seasoning, not the whole meal.

One thing that does carry weight is the rider profile at this circuit. G Spokes is the standout: 7 rides at Ballina for 3 wins and 5 placings, hitting the frame more often than not. D Peisley also rides Ballina well from a proper sample, with 13 rides for 3 wins and 9 placings.

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
G Spokes 7 3 5 42.86 71.43
D Peisley 13 3 9 23.08 69.23
Jake Bayliss 8 1 5 12.50 62.50

And if you’re looking for a stable that reliably gets runners to run their race here, Dunn’s Ballina record is the one worth respecting: 19 runners for 4 wins and 12 placings, a place strike north of sixty percent.

Race-by-race

Race 1: Ballina Fair Country Boosted Mdn Plate — 13:25, 1094m

Immortal Storm looks the natural winner because the profile screams “about to land one”. Four straight placings (3222) is not bad luck forever; it’s usually a horse consistently putting itself in the finish and just needing the right set up. From gate 3 he should park close enough that he doesn’t need luck, and D Peisley is a proper Ballina rider from a meaningful sample.

The danger is Zelenka from the inside alley. It’s not a deep form line (54-69), but barrier 1 over this trip gives the jockey the option to hold a spot and pinch cheap lengths if the outside runners don’t get across cleanly. If the race turns into a sit and sprint, that draw matters.

Others worth a mention without overplaying them: Commedia has been around the mark (24-542) and has placed on its only Ballina run, but it’s stuck in gate 7 and may have to do it the hard way.

Staking: Win bet Immortal Storm. Small quinella saver with Zelenka if you want insurance against the inside-run steal.

Race 2: Lennox Hotel Plate (C1) — 14:05, 2078m

Here’s the puzzle: do you take the last start winner and trust the step up, or do you back the in-form horse that has been living in the finish? I’m siding with Sicilian Warrior because the recent run tells a clean story. The form line (733291) says he’s improved as the prep has gone on, and the last 90 days backs it up: five runs for one win and four placings. That’s consistency you can bet around in a Class 1 over a trip where plenty of these find a way to get beaten.

He’s drawn 6, which is fine at 2078m, and L P Rolls should have enough time to sort his position. The Geran yard also gets immediate results at Ballina on small exposure, winning with its only runner here. That’s not a trend, but it does say they don’t waste the drive.

Classic Shiraz is the main threat. Marcus Wilson has him flying (727431) and he’s drawn gate 2, which is the kind of draw that lets you control your own destiny at this trip. If he finds the rail in the first 300m and turns it into a staying sprint, he’s the one most likely to make Sicilian Warrior earn it.

I’m happy to be against the older horse Besiege under 130.0, purely on the “where’s the upside?” question. The form (48266-) reads like a horse that can run a race, not a horse that wants to win one.

Staking: Sicilian Warrior win bet. Exacta saver Classic Shiraz to beat Sicilian Warrior only if your map says Classic Shiraz controls.

Race 3: Lawrence & Hanson Mdn Hcp — 14:40, 1367m

The market will want to find something here, but I want a horse that can land in the first half without burning petrol. Valour Victorious gets that chance from barrier 1. The form (6507-) is nothing to frame, but this is a maiden handicap and the inside draw plus the lighter weight (117.9) gives Bailie Baker every chance to ride a patient, low-risk race and have something left at the 200m.

Amazigh Torque is the obvious danger because you can see the intent in the booking. Dunn puts Jake Bayliss on, and while Bayliss doesn’t win heaps here, he hits the frame often enough at Ballina to take seriously. Amazigh Torque’s form (327) fits the “on speed, hang on” type, and gate 2 helps.

For a roughie to include if you’re playing wider exotics, Super Johnny Joya (09-3) comes off a placing and draws to get cover. But it’s still a horse with a thin body of work, so keep it in the “maybe” bucket.

Staking: Watch race or small each-way Valour Victorious only if you’re getting a price. If Valour Victorious is short, I’d rather save my money for Race 2 or Race 4.

Race 4: Tab Country Boosted (Bm58) — 15:15, 1367m

This is the Dunn race, and the way to play it is to pick the right Dunn horse rather than guess which of the three will get the luck. I’m with Too Hot To Torque. The form (41-2) has genuine upside, he’s still a 3yo, and he maps better than the wide-drawn stablemates. Gate 3 lets Jett Newman land close and keep the tempo honest. Too Hot To Torque has also run second on his only Ballina start, so we know the track doesn’t knock him around.

The threat is Alleze, the unbeaten one (1-1). You respect it, you don’t argue with it, but gate 9 over 1367m asks the question: does she have the early speed to cross, or does she get posted and forced to make the run? Dunn’s overall Ballina record is strong (19 runners for 4 wins and 12 placings), but you still need the map to cooperate.

If you want a horse to spice up your multiples, Gaming profiles as the “run well again” type. He’s placed on his only Ballina run and brings honest recent form (354293). I don’t love guessing where the winning run comes from with him, but he’s a good anchor for the top four in a quaddie if the price is right.

Staking: Too Hot To Torque win bet. Save on Alleze if the market lets you, because the unbeaten profile can smash a BM58 if she gets across cleanly. For multis, Too Hot To Torque as the banker leg makes sense.

The plays

NAP: Sicilian Warrior (Race 2, 14:05). He’s been in the money in four of his last five and looks like a horse that keeps finding the line, which is what you want at 2078m when others start looking for excuses.

Value: Too Hot To Torque (Race 4, 15:15) if he’s not priced like the Dunn “obvious one”. He maps to get the best run of the stable trio, and that’s often the difference in these Benchmark races.

Banker for multis: Sicilian Warrior. Even if he doesn’t win, he’s the type that turns up and gives you a place result more often than not.

Each-way angle: Immortal Storm (Race 1, 13:25). Four straight placings is a habit, and gate 3 keeps him out of trouble.

Course angle to keep in your pocket: Dunn at Ballina is not guesswork. Nineteen runners is a real sample and he places nearly two thirds of them. When you see him with multiple runners on a country card like this, start your quaddie with his numbers then make the map knock them out, not the other way around.

If Dunn keeps rolling into Ballina with this sort of strike, the only question next meeting is which runner gets the soft run, because the stable will keep doing its part.
