Bathurst Racing Tips 17 Aug — can Italus repeat here?

Racingbase Staff Racingbase Staff

There’s one runner on this Bathurst card that actually gives you a proper anchor point: Italus. He’s been here twice and he’s done the job once, which is more than most of these can say about this track. That matters today, because Bathurst’s data is thin across the meeting and you don’t want to pretend a pile of one-start records are crystal balls.

So I’ve treated this like a form morning at the pub: trust what’s solid, respect the horses that keep putting themselves in the finish, and price the rest like question marks until they answer something. You’ll get Bathurst racing tips race by race, with a clear betting call each time, and a couple of meeting-wide angles you can actually use.

Meeting notes: 5 races, turf, with three events over 1312m before we step up to 2187m and finish with a 1203m dash.

Bathurst — the setup

Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one or two starts here, so I’m leaning harder on current form patterns, barriers, weights and who looks likely to control the race shape.

One thing you can use with confidence: a couple of jockeys and trainers have real volume here.

Race-by-race

Race 1: Nsw Jockeys Association Mdn Hcp — 13:05, 1312m

Nortoko is the one I want onside early. That form line of 7-34434 is the classic Bathurst maiden profile: keeps turning up, keeps being competitive, and looks ready for the day everything goes right. Gate 7 isn’t perfect, but Clayton Gallagher has enough experience here to offset it, and he’s ridden 7 times at the track for 2 wins, so he knows how to time a run around Bathurst.

The danger is Azucar. He’s been knocking on the door too (6-6337) and from barrier 6 he can land in the first half without spending petrol. If the race turns into a sprint from the 400m, he’s the type that can pinch it while the others look for runs.

Bet: Win bet Nortoko. Small saver quinella Nortoko and Azucar if you want insurance in a thin maiden.

Race 2: Bell Conveyancing Mdn Hcp — 13:40, 1312m

Here’s the puzzle: does Three Wishes finally get paid for being honest, or does the weight anchor him at the wrong time? He’s 3352 this prep, he maps to get a soft run from gate 3, and Louise Day can put him into the race without doing anything fancy. The obvious knock is the big impost, but in these Bathurst maidens, toughness counts.

Celestial Grace looks the danger on the map. She draws 1, carries 127.8, and MS R Freeman is a genuine Bathurst rider with 7 rides here for 2 wins and 4 placings. If Freeman holds the fence and the gaps appear at the right time, she can be the one that makes Three Wishes work for it.

I’ll also keep Maysun safe. Snowden doesn’t need to win these sorts of races, but when the stable lands in a country maiden it can be for a reason, and Tom Sherry is a positive booking.

Bet: Each-way Three Wishes. Exacta saver Three Wishes over Celestial Grace.

Race 3: Alan Barton Memorial Hcp (C1) — 14:15, 1312m

The market usually overreacts to a last-start win in this grade, but On Her Merits doesn’t look like a flash in the pan. That form line (6-33091) says she’s been building, and the gate (2) gives A Layt options to either hold a spot or even slide closer if it’s a slow early tempo.

My main worry is Nafanua. He’s got the upside profile (2-5413), carries a manageable 126.7, and Baker runners don’t come to these meetings to sightsee. If Newman lands one off the fence with cover from gate 5, Nafanua can be the one that gets the last crack.

Gem Tycoon adds some spice as a place play. He’s been to Bathurst once and placed, so while that’s not enough to call him a track horse, it’s at least proof he handles the circuit.

Bet: Win bet On Her Merits. Save on Nafanua if your price is short and you hate losing to Baker.

Race 4: Dusty Hooves Media (Bm58) — 14:55, 2187m

Italus is the meeting’s cleanest angle. He’s been to Bathurst twice for a win and another placing, and in a 2187m race where plenty are guessing, that counts. The draw (5) is workable, Jacob Stiff is the right kind of rider for this trip, and Stiff’s Bathurst record is the one I trust: 12 rides for 3 wins and he hits the frame two-thirds of the time. That’s not a fluke number, that’s repetition.

Tactically, I want Italus close enough that he doesn’t need to pass the whole field. There are enough older grinders here that a truly run staying race is possible, and if they turn it into a slog from the 700m, the horse that’s already proven at the track tends to keep finding.

The danger is Tis No Man. That form line ends with a 1, and Olive’s stable does well here over time, winning two from five at the track. If Nestor can sneak across and get a soft mid-race, Tis No Man is the one who can outkick Italus late.

Bet: Win Italus. If you’re playing exotics, use Tis No Man as the saver. This is the best betting race on the card because we have an actual course reference point.

Race 5: Inland Digital Country Boosted (Bm58) — 15:35, 1203m

The closing sprint looks like a clash of profiles: the consistent mare who keeps landing in the finish, and the younger improver who might be better than this grade.

I’m siding with Miss Capricorn. Her form (1-24223) is what you want in a BM58: always there, rarely runs a bad one, and drawn gate 2 to get the cheap run. Gabrielle Johnston has ridden once at Bathurst and won, and while one ride isn’t a trend, it does tell you she’s handled the place before.

Flywire is the danger and the upside runner. He’s 714 from three starts, draws 4, and Keatings is a solid Bathurst jockey with enough rides here to take seriously. If Flywire controls the speed or lands right on it, he can be the one that improves past them.

I’m against the big weights late. Street Parade carries 139.9 from gate 11 and that’s a hard ask in a 1203m race where position matters.

Bet: Win Miss Capricorn. Quinella Miss Capricorn and Flywire if you want a simple cover.

The plays

This meeting doesn’t hand you ten confident bets. It hands you two strong leans and a couple of sensible supports, which is exactly how I’d play it.

NAP: Italus (Race 4, 14:55). He’s already proven at Bathurst with a win and a placing from two visits, and he gets Jacob Stiff, who rides this track as well as anyone on the card.

Value: Nortoko (Race 1, 13:05). The consistency profile is there and Gallagher has enough Bathurst craft to keep him out of trouble from a slightly awkward gate.

Banker for multis: Miss Capricorn (Race 5, 15:35). Drawn to get the run and her recent form says she turns up every time.

Each-way play: Three Wishes (Race 2, 13:40). He keeps finding the placings and maps to get every chance again, even under the big weight.

Course angle to keep: follow Jacob Stiff at Bathurst when he gets rides that map for him. With 12 rides here and eight placings, he’s the jockey I’m happiest to trust when the track turns tricky late in the day.

If Italus runs the trip the way I expect, you’ll see more stables looking for proven Bathurst stayers when the spring country cups start to roll in.
