Nice performance by VALSPAR at Sandown on March 15 and the Team Hawkes-trained galloper can go one spot better after finishing runner-up behind Chico Sonado. He settled just behind the leaders that day and closed off solidly behind the winner. The 3rd placegetter has since come out and claimed its Maiden and Valspar comes in with the best last start benchmark figures of any runner. Extra 100m in distance should suit and he gets the ride from Damien Oliver.

Race 2 No. 4 NON GRATA – ($7.50)
NON GRATA can go close in Race 2 of the day at Ballarat. The Maher/Eustace galloper made his debut on March 18 at Geelong over the 1121m and settled just off them in the small field but couldn’t quite reel in Theycallmebruce. He went 3.6 lengths slower than standard benchmark, which is a better figure than what any runner in this race has produced. With improvement to come at his second start, the son of Pariah should be hard to beat.
