Richmond Racing Tips Oct 3 — Can Anyone Beat Tanya Parry?
Overview
Fourteen of the twenty-four runners racing at Richmond today carry the colours of one stable. Tanya Parry has gone searching for depth rather than a single standout, and by the time the gates open for race one she’ll have a runner in every race on the card. That’s the story worth knowing before you open your wallet: these Richmond racing tips lean heavily on working out which of her runners are the real thing and which are simply making up the numbers, because her card-wide record sits at a moderate strike rate across her past Richmond starts. Volume doesn’t equal value, and the standout on paper today, Groove Jet, happens to wear Parry’s colours and arrives in career-best form.
Five races, all run on Richmond’s dirt circuit over sprint-to-middle distances from 1094m to 1531m, and a field that’s light on deep course history everywhere else. Read on for the pick in each race, the one we’d trust most, and where the sample size doesn’t back up the hype.
Richmond racing tips: what the card gives us today
Horse form at the track itself is almost nonexistent across today’s field. Only Allezizzy has started twice at Richmond — she won one of those runs and placed in both — and every other runner with a course result has had just the one start there. That’s a data point, not a trend, so treat any “won at Richmond” line with the right amount of caution: it usually means exactly one run.
Jockeys are in a similar spot. D Sparks has the deepest book of course rides among today’s partners with seven, which is enough volume to trust the number: one winner and three further placings from those seven, a strike rate in the mid-teens that undersells how busy he is today — five rides, more than anyone else in the room. M Gray and Brooke Stower have both ridden well at Richmond on small samples of four runs apiece, but neither has the volume yet to call it skill rather than luck.
Trainers are the one area with something to work with. Three stables have sent enough runners through Richmond for the numbers to mean something:
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MS S Royes | 7 | 3 | 6 | 42.86% | 85.71% |
| Tanya Parry | 23 | 4 | 13 | 17.39% | 56.52% |
| Toni Schofield | 4 | 2 | 2 | 50.00% | 50.00% |
MS S Royes has the healthiest numbers of the three, built on a sample worth believing, and she’s not shy about sending runners here — five of them today, spread across three races. Parry’s far higher volume comes with a lower conversion rate, which fits the theory that she treats Richmond as a numbers game rather than a stage for her best. Schofield’s two winners from four starts reads well, but it’s the shortest resume of the three — worth knowing, not worth betting the house on.
Race by race at Richmond
Race 1: Hcp (Cl B) — 1:30pm, 1094m
Instigate and Perrieres both carry Tanya Parry’s gear, and both own unbeaten single-start records at Richmond — one win from one run each, which is worth mentioning and nothing more. The gap between them is in how they’re racing right now. Instigate has placed in six of his past seven runs this prep, a model of consistency even without a recent win, and the two efforts right before today read 3rd then 2nd. Perrieres has the bigger placing tally over a shorter sample but his last two starts have been one-paced fourths, which is the kind of form you want to see turn around before following blind.
Lively Spirit reads better than both of them on recent figures if you ignore a last-start flop (9th) — there are three placings in the six runs before that — but a horse capable of running both ends of the card needs the tempo to fall his way. Cinchicated, the lone three-year-old in the field, has had two below-par runs after a string of placings and carries the lightest weight here at 131.1kg, more a case for the exotics than the top of the ticket. Outcast Soldier is the one making up the numbers.
Instigate for the win, with Perrieres as the forgiving second leg if the market lets him drift.
Race 2: (Bm60) — 2:15pm, 1094m
Groove Jet has been the form horse nobody’s talking about. Four wins from her past six runs this prep, a strike rate that would stand out at any track, and she steps up again for Tanya Parry and Brooke Stower in a race that otherwise reads wide open. The one blemish in that sequence is a fifth, sandwiched between two wins, and even that run doesn’t look like it exposed a genuine weakness so much as a different day. Against this field at Bm60 level, the question isn’t whether she’s good enough — it’s whether anything here can match her gears in the straight.
Without is the obvious policeman. He won his only Richmond start and has banked a placing in three of his past four runs for MS S Royes, the trainer with the best underlying card-wide numbers at this track (see above). Fly Fifer, from the same stable, also won on debut at Richmond but has been middling since — a couple of wins mixed through six runs with an average finish well outside the top four — so he’s more each-way interest than a genuine win threat.
Viking Valour is the formline that makes you second-guess yourself: four runs reading 1-2-1-2 immediately before a last-start 6th. If that run was a one-off — wrong track, wrong trip, wrong luck — he’s still capable of running down a false-run leader. Allezizzy has placed in both her Richmond starts and won one of them, but needs the breaks on paper against this depth.

Groove Jet to win, with Without the each-way cover if you want the race spread. Viking Valour is the one worth a small saver if the beaten-favourite angle appeals.
Race 3: Hcp (55) — 3:00pm, 1312m
MS S Royes doesn’t send runners to Richmond without a plan, and Makanui is her best shot here — a winner on his only start at this track, and over a much bigger sample this year (nine runs) he’s hit the frame two-thirds of the time for a 22% win rate. Stepping up in distance to 1312m suits a horse who’s been racing on through his runs rather than hanging on at the finish.
Vonk is the one danger with a genuine form case: six placings and no wins from his last six starts, the profile of a horse that keeps turning up but can’t find the breakthrough. He’s drawn to get a clean run and the step up to 1312m won’t hurt him either.
Nassau County and Crudo are both racing on thin recent form, and Up To Us has only two runs to his name so far. Makanui for the win, Vonk underneath in the exacta.
Race 4: Mdn Plate — 3:50pm, 1312m
Is there anything to get excited about in this maiden? Not really. Macho Grande’s last run was a placing (2nd) after four ordinary efforts before it, which at least points the right way second-up from a let-up. I’lltellyouafter has three thirds scattered through his past six runs but hasn’t found better than that, and his one run at Richmond ended unplaced. Babe Roth’s recent figures don’t invite confidence, and Kelai Kava is a first starter with no public form to assess.
If forced, Macho Grande on the strength of his most recent run — but this is a watch race rather than one to back with conviction.
Race 5: Plate (C3) — 4:30pm, 1531m
Step up to 1531m and this becomes a race about who travels through it the easiest. Azconpete’s recent figures are scattered but his latest run was a placing, and barrier 2 should let D Sparks dictate where he sits. Cryptology has been the model of consistency without winning — minor money in three of his past five goes — and draws a touch wider at barrier 4, meaning he’ll need the race to open up rather than control it himself.
Buz Fuz keeps circling minor placings without breaking through, Trapeze Pleasure is erratic on paper, and Dancing Dolly returns from a break on moderate earlier form. Azconpete the each-way pick, with Cryptology the swooper if the speed out in front gets carried too hard.
Where the money goes
If today’s Richmond racing tips boil down to one idea, it’s this: trust the horse in form over the stable sending the most runners. Groove Jet is the NAP. Four wins from her past six starts is the kind of form that doesn’t need Richmond specifically to back it up, and with Tanya Parry sending more runners than anyone else today, this is the one worth following ahead of anything else wearing her colours.
Makanui is the value play in race three. A winner on his only run at this track and clearly in form across a nine-run sample this year, he looks the sort of runner who should start at a shorter price than he probably will.
For the banker leg of a multi, Instigate’s consistency — six placings from his past seven runs — makes him the safest “has to figure” selection on the card, even without a recent win to point to. Vonk is the each-way watch in race three: six placings and no wins from his last six says the frame is close to guaranteed, even if the win keeps not arriving.
The course angle: MS S Royes has the best numbers of any trainer with a real Richmond sample, and she’s not just here to make up the field. If she keeps bringing this much depth to this track, her name is worth checking before the saddlecloth number.
