Phantom Major looks the right kind of maiden for Canterbury: lightly-raced, already good enough to run second, and he gets the J B McDonald booking for Waller. Blenheim Girl is the obvious threat and she’s not a token one either: she won on her only start at Canterbury, and she comes here off sharp form (form “41-1”). Tommy Berry sticking is a positive, and while barrier 7 is less cosy than the inside gate, she can land with cover if they roll along early.

Race 3: Hyland Race Colours (Bm64) — 14:00, 1203m
The market is going to want to forgive a few here, and it’ll probably pay to be a bit colder. I’m with The Little General as the horse with the clearest Canterbury setup: barrier 4, Waterhouse and Bott training, and a pattern that usually involves being positive early. Gai and Adrian have had 50 runners at Canterbury for 17 wins and 28 placings, and that strike rate holds water because it’s built on volume.
He’s also the sort that can make his own luck in a race where some of the better-credentialed runners may need tempo and gaps. If he controls the first half, he can turn it into a 400m dash and put pressure on anything posted wide.
The danger is Gambler</strong from the inside draw (gate 1).
