BEST BET: ANOTHER WIL
Race number 9 (Memsie Stakes)
Some pundits are describing this year’s edition of the Memsie Stakes as one of the best in the last 100 years, and with Another Wil, Fangirl, Mr Brightside and Tom Kitten all set to be involved, it is hard to disagree.
With two victories from three appearances at Caulfield, Another Wil often enjoys himself at the Melbourne-based racecourse. His latest success at the venue came back in April when he won the C F Orr Stakes, beating Mr Brightside in a tight finish to the Group One contest.
As he has shown throughout his career, Another Wil is often at his best when fresh. Trainer Ciaron Maher will have him fit and ready for this assignment, unlike some of his rivals here who will benefit from their first runs of the campaign.
A lot of respect goes to what Mr Brightside has achieved in his career. He has won nine Group One contests. However, now at the age of eight, it is likely he will be on the decline. On his last appearance in the Champions Mile at Sha Tin in Hong Kong, he came home at the rear of the field in a disappointing run. Expect to see him bounce back from that, but it may be with one of the minor honours.
Another Wil is just shy of $2 million in career earnings from his 16 starts so far. Victory in the prestigious Memsie Stakes will take him across the magical $2 million mark and give his connections another major triumph.
SECOND BEST BET: VINROCK
Race number 6 (McNeil Stakes)
Vinrock had an excellent debut campaign on the track last season as a two-year-old, with the highlight of his year being his victory in the Group One Inglis Sires’ at Randwick. Matt Laurie’s runner has been eased in class for his opening run of the new season in the Group Three McNeil Stakes, where he looks to be the one to beat.
The son of I Am Invincible recently had a racecourse gallop at Caulfield and Laurie was delighted with what he saw from his colt. He raced alongside See You In Heaven, and when asked to quicken, he swept past his new stablemate.
The Run To The Roses and Golden Rose will both be targets for Vinrock this season, but before those tougher assignments, he can make a winning start to the campaign at Caulfield.
BEST VALUE: GERRINGONG
Race number 8 (Cockram Stakes)
Well-bred mare, Gerringong, has been unlucky not to get her nose in front at the winning line in her last three starts. The daughter of Blue Point has been running consistently well, hitting the frame at Scone, Eagle Farm and Ipswich.
The two-time winner featured in a trial at Canterbury in her preparation for this run. She produced some impressive sectionals in that workout, and if she builds upon that, she has a great chance of landing the first prize in the Cockram Stakes.
