Caulfield Racing Tips 10/10/2026 — Maher’s trio to run the table?
Opening
Chris Waller might own plenty of Saturdays, but this Caulfield card has a different fingerprint on it: C Maher turns up with a proper hand in the opener and the profile screams “set up to keep winning”. Three runners in the first, all with momentum, and one of them already knows how to get it done around this circuit.
It’s a Good track, it’s Turf, and the meeting (from what we’ve got in front of us) is a tight two-race look at two very different puzzles: a Benchmark 80 over the awkward 1859m, then a 3yo dash where barriers and intent matter as much as raw ability. If you want Caulfield racing tips that actually explain the “why”, not just the “who”, you’re in the right place.
Caulfield — the setup
Track: Turf
Going: Good
Limited course form across today’s fields in the pure horse sense. Most of these have one or two Caulfield starts, so I’m treating “course stats” as a clue, not a gospel. Where it does mean something is with the riders and the big-volume stables, because that sample size is real.

The rider angle worth respecting: Ethan Brown has 47 rides at Caulfield in the sample and wins a touch over one in five. Craig Williams is the reliability play, hitting the frame more than half the time from 94 rides. Mark Zahra’s strike is strong enough to matter too (57 rides), and when any of these three land on a progressive horse, I’m rarely keen to be against them.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ethan Brown | 47 | 10 | 16 | 21.28 | 34.04 |
| Craig Williams | 94 | 16 | 49 | 17.02 | 52.13 |
| Mark Zahra | 57 | 10 | 20 | 17.54 | 35.09 |
The stable angle: Maher has serious volume here (211 runners in the sample) and still holds a mid-teens strike with strong place returns. The Freedmans also show up as a proper Caulfield operation with 65 runners, and the Hayes team have enough ammunition year-round that their numbers (160 runners) carry weight.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A & S Freedman | 65 | 14 | 27 | 21.54 | 41.54 |
| C Maher | 211 | 33 | 83 | 15.64 | 39.34 |
| Ben, Will & JD Hayes | 160 | 16 | 58 | 10.00 | 36.25 |
Race-by-race
Race 1: Beverly (Bm80) — 12:15, 1859m
I’m with In’kantosstar. He’s drawn barrier 1, he carries 126.7, and he comes from the stable most likely to have mapped this race three weeks ago and been smiling ever since. The form line is clean: 2-111. That’s not a horse looking for excuses, that’s a horse who knows where the winning post is and keeps turning up on time.
And yes, the Caulfield stat is only one run, so I’m not dressing it up as a “track specialist”. But it matters that he’s won on his only start here. Some horses walk into Caulfield and hate the rhythm; others find it and relax. The inside draw lets Ethan Brown (who wins a bit over one in five at this track from 47 rides) ride the race he wants, not the one the barrier gives him.
The race has a clear storyline: Maher has three bullets. Emperor Tzu is the obvious danger on pure momentum, coming in off 422111 and also a winner on his only Caulfield run. The knock is the gate (10). If Jabez Johnstone can slide across without spending petrol early, he’s absolutely the one that can mug my pick late. But if he works too hard to find a spot, that 1859m becomes a long walk home.
Bring Forth (form 2-62110) looks the other logical winning threat. He’s got the big cloth, he’ll be prominent from gate 7, and Price and Kent always have them fit enough to hold a position. My concern is the weight: he’s at 134.4 and giving away lumps to the younger improvers, which is the sort of thing Caulfield can punish when the pressure goes on from the 600m.
What I’d do: Win bet In’kantosstar. Save on Emperor Tzu if the market lets you, because the ceiling is there and the form says he keeps finding. Everything else feels like they’re chasing the right horses at the wrong stage.

Race 2: Thoroughbred Club Of Australia Plate — 12:50, 1312m
This is the sort of 3yo race where you can overcomplicate it and still be wrong. I’m taking the simple angle: Gas Station Rose has the right gate pattern (7), the right jockey (Craig Williams, who hits the frame more than half the time at Caulfield from 94 rides), and the right early-career profile (21) to keep improving as the pressure rises.
There’s also a subtle stable tick. Alexander Rae doesn’t have huge volume at Caulfield, but he’s got enough runners (6 in the sample) to make the record meaningful, and he’s won a third of them. That’s not noise. That’s a small team placing them with intent.
The danger I can’t ignore is Fiery Fun (form 51) for the Freedmans with Zahra. Freedman runners at Caulfield hold up over a big sample (65 runners and a strong win and place profile), and Zahra is a rider who can win these races from the 600m, not the 200m. If they go even slightly too hard early and it becomes a late dash, he’s the one I want finishing over the top.
Sequinned is the class edge candidate by association: Waller and McDonald together always attracts money, and the filly has a winning profile in the form (76115) without being bulletproof. The issue is the map. Gate 10 at 1312m can turn into an expensive run if she has to be three wide for too long, and Caulfield doesn’t hand out cheap favours when you’re giving away cover.
One runner I’m happy to take on at likely shorter odds than I want is Verzain. The figures here are one run at Caulfield and no placing, and the recent form tail (221108) says the bubble might have burst for now. If he wins, he’ll have earned it.
What I’d do: Win bet Gas Station Rose. Exacta saver with Fiery Fun running second if you like a little structure. If the market steamrolls into the Waller and McDonald runner, I’d rather let it go than chase a short price from a wide gate.
The plays
NAP: In’kantosstar (Race 1, 12:15). Barrier 1, a winning streak (2-111), and the Maher operation at Caulfield has enough volume to trust when they line up multiple chances in the same race.
Value: Fiery Fun (Race 2, 12:50) if the market keeps her honest. Freedman at Caulfield is a proper long-sample edge, and Zahra rides this track like he owns the corners.
Banker for multis: Gas Station Rose (Race 2). The Craig Williams factor at Caulfield is real over 94 rides, and the horse’s 21 form says she’s still on the way up.
Each-way lean: I’m not forcing an each-way play with only two races and no odds on the page. If you insist, Emperor Tzu in Race 1 is the profile horse to run top two again, but the gate makes him a saver rather than a confident anchor.
Course angle to keep: When Ethan Brown gets a gate that lets him choose (like barrier 1 here), his Caulfield strike profile stacks up with the best of the day’s riders. Watch how often that inside draw turns into a “no decisions” ride for him in the months ahead.
