Caulfield Racing Tips 15 Aug — can Simurgh stay perfect here?
Caulfield Racing Tips 15 Aug — can Simurgh stay perfect here?
There’s one clean, sharp angle at Caulfield today that’s hard to unsee once you’ve clocked it: Simurgh has been here twice and he’s been too good twice. That’s not a “track specialist” sample yet, but it is a loud signal in a staying race where plenty of these are more reliable on paper than on the day.
We’ve only got two races on the parsed card provided, both on turf, and they’re very different puzzles. The opener is a 1203m BM74 with speed and awkward gates, the sort of race where you win it in the first 200 metres or you spend the last 200 wishing you did. Then we get a 2187m BM78 with a stack of older legs and a couple of progressive profiles trying to push through. These Caulfield racing tips are written like you’re reading over a mate’s shoulder: what I like, what scares me, and where I’m actually prepared to bet.
Caulfield — the setup
Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one or two visits here, so I’m treating Caulfield records as context rather than gospel. The one exception is the jockey pool: a few of the riders on the card have enough volume here to take their strike rates seriously.

| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |

| J Mott | 93 | 15 | 29 | 16.13 | 31.18 |
Trainer-wise, the big volume stable on this card is C Maher (he’s got a proper sample at Caulfield: 139 runners for 18 wins and 53 placings). You don’t build a whole day around that, but it does matter when you’re splitting hairs between similar form lines.
Race-by-race
Race 1: Catanach’s Jewellers Mrc150 Partner (Bm74) — 12:25, 1203m
The market usually makes this sort of 1203m handicap look simpler than it is, but I’m starting with the one horse who brings both current form and a Caulfield tick: Markdel. He comes in off a “8-11521” prep line and, more importantly for today, he won on his only start at Caulfield. That’s not a trend, but it’s a nice piece of evidence when you’re asking a horse to handle the Caulfield rhythm and pressure again. Barrier 5 is workable, and he carries 60.5kg (133.3lb) which is the sort of weight that exposes pretenders quickly.
The race shape looks busy. Piastri (gate 4) and Naval Academy (gate 3) both come from the Maher camp and sit right in the launch zone to take a position without burning too much petrol. Behaviour (gate 8) is the other one I respect because he’s trending the right way on raw form (876321) and he’s actually handled this track over three runs, placing twice. You’re not getting “specialist” confidence from three runs, but you are getting reassurance he won’t hate it.
If you want a lighter-weight improver, Walter Spur is the one that makes the handicapper’s numbers look interesting: he’s down at 54.5kg (120.1lb), and his form reads like a horse that’s still in the hunt late (46-421). The knock is gate 11 over this trip in a race where traffic can ruin you.
Danger: Educated. The profile screams “proper horse in the making” with “1-116”, and he gets in with 56.0kg (123.4lb). Barrier 10 is the test. If he pushes forward without doing silly work, he can absolutely win.
Staking: Win bet Markdel. Small saver on Behaviour</strong if you want coverage against the closer with the right trajectory.
Race 2: Remembering Diatribe (Bm78) — 13:00, 2187m
Here’s the question that matters: do you want the sexy profile, or do you want the horse that just keeps turning up and running to his level at this track? I’m taking the latter. Simurgh is my play, and I’m not trying to get cute about it. He’s “1-2112” this prep, Craig Williams rides, and he’s won both of his Caulfield starts. Two runs isn’t enough to label him anything, but it is enough to say he’s comfortable here and, in a 2187m race, comfort counts.
From a map perspective, he doesn’t need to be last and lucky. Williams rides Caulfield like he owns the place, and he hits the frame here more often than not (43 placings from 71 rides). That matters in these staying handicaps where a couple of riders panic at the 800m and turn it into a mess.
The obvious danger is Amleto. He’s rock-solid on form (231221) and he’s placed in all three Caulfield runs, which is exactly the kind of emerging pattern you take seriously. He draws 7, carries 58.5kg (130.0lb), and Maher has enough Caulfield volume to trust his placements. If Amleto gets the right drag into it and Simurgh has to make the first mid-race move, the “placed every time here” horse can easily be the one finishing over the top.
For value hunters, Shultzy (821321) is the old pro who keeps answering the bell, but this is the sort of race where you can back the “consistent nine-year-old” into a hole if the tempo turns tactical and he’s giving away positioning. Leonchroi also warrants a mention because he placed on his only Caulfield start and his recent form (2-1502) has enough upside, but he’s still learning how to put a field away.
Staking: Win bet Simurgh. Exacta saver Simurgh with Amleto if you’re playing doubles. This is the best betting race on the card for mine because the track angle actually aligns with current form.

The plays
NAP: Simurgh (Race 2, 13:00). Two Caulfield runs, two wins, and he arrives off a prep that reads like he’s holding his level rather than searching for it. In these 2187m handicaps I want the horse that’s already proven he can travel and finish here.
Value: Behaviour (Race 1, 12:25). The “876321” progression is the sort of line I love in a sprint handicap, and he’s handled Caulfield well enough across three goes to trust him to show up again.
Banker for multis: Amleto to place (Race 2). He’s placed in all three Caulfield appearances and his current form is as dependable as you’ll get in this grade.
Each-way look: Markdel (Race 1). He’s a last-start winner and he’s already won at Caulfield. The weight is the push-pull: it can beat him, but it also means you’ll often get a fair price if the market leans to the lighter ones.
Course angle to keep: When Craig Williams is on the horse you already want at Caulfield, don’t overthink it. He’s on the podium here more than 60% of the time, and that saves you from plenty of “bad ride” beats across a prep. Watch how he positions Simurgh in the first 400 metres, because that’s the blueprint you want to follow next time he rides a similar staying handicap.
