The $1 million Doomben Cup is the feature race this weekend at Doomben Racecourse, and the Group One contest has attracted a stellar line-up. There are three other group races to support the Doomben Cup, including the Group Two ANZ Bloodstock News The Roses.
Here is a look at the best bets from the Stradbroke Season event, including a preview of the highlight of the day, which comes at race eight on the racecard.
BEST BET: ANTINO
Race 8 (Doomben Cup)
Antino goes into this weekend’s Doomben Cup bidding for a first career Group One success, and after being handed an ideal draw in barrier 11, he has a great chance of recording that maiden win at the highest level.
Tony Gollan’s runner comes into this race in excellent form, having won the Group Two Hollindale Stakes on his last start at Gold Coast. He flourished over the 1800-metre distance on heavy ground to prevail by just over three lengths.
Pride Of Jenni is the obvious danger in this race to Antino, but her challenge has not been helped with barrier one. It means Crag Newitt will need some luck in running from the inside position, with traffic likely to be a factor for the talented mare.
Last year’s winner Bois D’Argent deserves respect following his performance in 2024. He led from leaving the barriers to the finish line. However, this is a much stronger race, and a repeat of that success would require him to take a big step forward on his recent form.
SECOND BEST BET: BENAGIL
Race 7 (The Roses)
Benagil confirmed her status as one of the leading three-year-olds in Australia when she won the Group One Australasian Oaks at Morphetville last month. It was a huge performance from Glen Thompson’s runner, and it indicated there is likely to be more to come over this distance.
Since stepping up to 2000 metres, Benagil has produced two big runs. Before her Australasian Oaks victory, she finished a respectable second in the Vinery Stud Stakes behind Treasurethe Moment. Fortunately for her connections, they don’t have to worry about the unbeaten filly at Doomben.
The daughter of Manhattan Rain looked sharp in her trial last week, indicating she is at the top of her game. Her rivals here are likely going to have to battle it out for second place in The Roses.
Best Value: Socks Nation
Race 6 (Magic Millions Mile)
Leading trainer Ciaron Maher will saddle the favourite for this year’s Magic Millions Mile with Vivy Air, however, it could be another of his stable runners that claims the first prize. Socks Nation, with Mark Zahra on board, should not be discounted from landing the spoils.
The four-year-old is a Group One winner as she caused an upset in the Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm in 2004. Connections of the filly will be hoping for a strong gallop, as she has the stamina to stay much further than this 1600-metre distance.
On her latest appearance on the track, Socks Nations came home ninth of 11 runners, but that was over the sprint distance of 1300m. Expect to see her come on for that run in the Magic Millions Mile.
