He’s drawn gate 4, he carries 121.2, and he lands in the right stable. Gollan at Doomben wins often enough to take seriously off real volume, and when he places one like this into a 3YO handicap, it usually isn’t for a quiet day out. Chelsea Baker is a capable rider around here and the weight pull is the selling point, because several of these carry 128.9 or more.
The obvious threat is Metal Boss (form 522) from gate 1. Cejay Graham from an inside alley can make this race ugly for the backmarkers, and Metal Boss keeps turning up and running well without getting it done. If he gets the cheap lead or the leaders-back trail, he can pinch it.

Race 3: Mekka Raceday 22 August (Bm90) — 12:53, 2406m
This is the staying race where people overthink it. I’m keeping it simple and siding with the mare who’s actually been turning up and performing in the last few months: Firm Agreement.
She comes in with form 0-09124 and, more importantly, she’s had five runs in the last 90 days for a win and three placings. That’s a proper, repeatable profile for a benchmark staying contest: she’s fit, she’s holding condition, and she generally does her job. Ryan Maloney is a big tick in races like this too, because he rides Doomben with enough intent to get into the rhythm early instead of conceding positions and hoping for luck.
The main danger is Cavalry Man, because his recent form says he can spike. He’s 341801</strong and while that reads a bit “boom or bust”, he’s also had five runs in the last 90 days for a win and three placings. If he gets rolling at the right time, he can outstay them.
I’m also respecting Marenaro as the knockout. He’s had one run at Doomben and placed, and his last-90-days strike says five starts for one win and four placings. That’s hard to ignore in a race where others either look out of form or are older legs you’d rather not trust.
