Highland Kitty is the one I want to be with, even if the gate makes it a bit uglier than it needs to be. She’s been living in the placings (form 52-222) and that tells you two things at once: she’s reliable, and she’s probably been crying out for the right run at the right time. At this trip, I’d rather back the horse who keeps finding the line than the one who flatters and fades.
The weight setup helps too. Highland Kitty carries 121.2, and in a maiden at 1804m that matters when the race turns into a sustained grind from the 600m. She’s also placed on her only Doomben start, which is worth a small tick without over-selling it.
The danger is Wingeandwin from barrier 1. The form is sketchy (57-0) and you’re taking trust on the class jump, but the map can hand this horse every favour. If Jag Guthmann-Chester can control the inside and pinch cheap sectionals, the race becomes a sprint late and the “always thereabouts” types can get held up looking for runs.

Race 2: Mekka Raceday 22 August Mdn Plate — 13:08, 1476m
This is the classic 3yo maiden question: do you want the horse with exposed “honest enough” form, or do you want to gamble on upside? I’m siding with the runner who’s already shown they can mix it and just needs the race run to suit.
Dragon Magic gets that nod. The form line is only two starts (57), but the setup is friendly: barrier 1, M Rodd on, and a trip where you can win by travelling and taking gaps rather than needing to be a big brute at the finish. Rodd’s Doomben record is strong on proper volume (54 rides for 11 wins), and he’s the kind of rider who makes inside draws count around here. If Dragon Magic can hold a spot and avoid getting cluttered up when the pressure goes on, it can be the one still running when others throw in the towel.
I respect Raging Raider as the danger. The form is more established (3436) and that consistency can win these races when the lightly raced ones don’t go on with it. Ben Thompson sticks, and he wins plenty at Doomben. If the pace is stronger than expected and they’re forced to be genuine from the 800m, Raging Raider’s battle-hardened profile comes right into it.
What I’m doing: Win bet Dragon Magic, small to medium stake. If the market gets too cute and it shortens aggressively, I’m happy to temper enthusiasm and treat it as a watch for later.
Race 3: The Gibson Mdn Hcp — 13:43, 1476m
The market problem in this race is that punters tend to fall in love with the “name trainer” angle and forget the cold fact: some maidens just don’t win until they’re absolutely spoon-fed the right run. This is where I want the horse who keeps putting itself in the finish and finally gets a map and weight setup that says “today”.
Edge Of Infinity is that horse. The form is a string of near-misses (334325) and it reads like a runner who’s knocking the door down without getting the knock-through. The big tick is barrier 4, which gives Jake Bayliss options to land one off the fence and stay out of the traffic. And while Bayliss doesn’t win often at Doomben relative to his rides (57 for 3), he does put them in the race here, and that’s what you want when you’re backing a horse to finally convert a place profile into a win.
There’s also a quiet course note: Edge Of Infinity has placed in both Doomben runs (2 starts, 2 placings). That’s not enough to call it a specialist, but it does tell you the track doesn’t beat it.
The danger is Moscow Mule. The form (32) screams “ready”, but you’re paying for it with weight: 132.2 is a lump in a maiden handicap, especially if the race turns into a sit-and-sprint where the lighter weights can quicken. Ben Thompson is a serious positive at this venue (129 rides for 22 wins), and if he can offset the impost by being positive early, Moscow Mule can absolutely win.
This is also the best betting race on the card because it’s the one where the profiles are clearest: one consistent closer with a perfect draw versus a progressive runner giving weight away.

Value: Dragon Magic (Race 2, 13:08). You’re not buying a perfect form card, you’re buying position and rider. Barrier 1 plus Rodd is the sort of combo that makes a two-start horse look a lot more experienced than it is.
Banker for multis: Highland Kitty (Race 1, 12:33) as a place anchor. She’s been living in the top three and carries 121.2, which keeps her in the fight when others are under pressure late.
Each-way look: If you must, Highland Kitty again. Six runs in the last 90 days window returned five placings and an average finishing position around second, which is exactly the profile you want for an each-way play in a thin maiden.
