Dubbo Racing Tips: Can Godwits Fix Its Course Record?

Racingbase Staff Racingbase Staff

Overview

Godwits has been one of the form horses of the winter everywhere except here. Seven runs in the last three months have produced two wins and five placings — an average finish inside second — yet the Dubbo résumé reads just one win from four visits to the track. That gap between career-best form and a quieter course record is the most interesting number on today’s card, and it sits right at the heart of our Dubbo racing tips for Friday’s five-race meeting. Todd Smith sends her out over the 2406m in race two, a genuine staying trip that should suit a mare finding this much form. Elsewhere, Brett Robb has committed five runners to the card, Panelli arrives off a win on its only previous visit to Dubbo, and a knot of professional placegetters — headed by Yeah Buddy, runner-up or thereabouts five times from six starts without breaking through — give the afternoon its shape. Read on for the full card, the numbers behind it, and where we’d put our money.

Reading the Dubbo card

Five races, all on the turf, stretching from the 1094m sprint trip in race four through to the 2406m staying test in race two. Course form is genuinely useful today rather than noise: four runners on the card — Forwarding, Godwits, Dunedin and Green Run — have each started three or more times at Dubbo, so the figures below can be trusted rather than treated as one-off samples.

Green Run’s record is the standout in the horse table — the clear course specialist on the day — even though his form away from Dubbo has cooled lately. Dunedin is the opposite case: only three runs here, but trainer MS J Galea has built a trainer strike rate at this track that beats every other stable represented today. In the saddle, Clayton Gallagher’s figures stand up against anyone in the colony, and the trainer numbers behind R P Northam and MS J Clement are worth knowing before the first race.

Race by race

Race 1: Bob Berry Real Estate Plate (C1) — 1:20pm, 1750m

Panelli is the one we keep coming back to in this opener. The four-year-old has been in the money three times from its last four runs — a win and three placings, average finish around third — and the single trip to Dubbo so far produced a win, which, on one start, is a data point worth having rather than a trend to lean on. Clayton Gallagher takes the ride, and his strike rate at this track is as good as anything in the jockey colony today. The danger is Media Spin, who has been metronomic without winning lately — three placings from its last four runs — and looks the natural swoop if Panelli finds traffic from barrier nine. Kody Nestor and trainer C Lundholm have both built solid numbers at Dubbo over much bigger samples, so this is no knockabout runner either. Win bet on Panelli, with Media Spin covered for the place.

Race 2: Signvision (Bm58) — 1:55pm, 2406m

The market problem with Godwits is that punters watching only the Dubbo line will see one win from four course runs and shrug. Look at the bigger picture and it’s a different story — two wins and five placings from the last seven runs, an average finish inside second, form that’s about as hot as anything on this card. Over the 2406m trip that matters more than the track address; this is a genuine staying test where recent fitness and class carry more weight than past course visits. Todd Smith has her ready off that trajectory, Clayton Gallagher takes the mount again, and the field is light — eight entries, three scratched, six left to go around — which keeps the pace honest rather than frantic.

Questionable is the each-way risk. She has placed in both her starts at this track and carries three placings from her last five runs everywhere, and trainer R P Northam’s number here is one of the stronger on the card — a place rate most stables at the meeting can’t match. If Godwits travels as well as the formline suggests, Questionable is the one most likely to grab the minor money from off the speed. No More Romance and Lady Tino round out the field without matching this kind of recent form.

This looks the best betting race of the day. Back Godwits to win, with Questionable the each-way play if you want to cover the race.

Race 3: BJB Plumbing & Gasfitting Country Boosted (Bm82) — 2:30pm, 1531m

Green Run grinds; Dunedin is building. Green Run’s course record is the standout number in this whole meeting — four places from five runs, including a win, for a horse whose formline away from Dubbo has been ordinary lately. That split tells you this is one that specifically handles the track, even when the rest of the formline doesn’t excite. Jacob Stiff, aboard again, has ridden at Dubbo more than any other jockey on the card, which only strengthens the case for using Green Run underneath rather than against.

Dunedin is the one with upside. Three runs at Dubbo have brought a win and two places — an emerging pattern rather than a proven trend — but trainer MS J Galea’s record here is hard to ignore, easily the best strike rate of any stable on today’s program. If that form continues, Dunedin goes close.

Each-way cover on Green Run given the course form, with Dunedin the swing factor if the gallop suits her finishing burst.

Race 4: Totally Workwear Country Boosted Mdn Hcp — 3:05pm, 1094m

Does anything in this fifteen-horse maiden deserve real confidence? Honestly, no. Most of the field are first starters with no course history to draw on, and the ones that have raced here haven’t done much — Nodefence is winless in two tries at Dubbo and Best Defence has managed just one placing from two course runs. If forced to pick, Best Defence gets the nod on the strength of a placing from its last three runs everywhere, including that single Dubbo effort, but this reads as a watch race rather than one to back with conviction. No bet, or a small saver on Best Defence each-way at most.

Race 5: Inland Petroleum Golden Eagle & Derby Day Mdn Plate — 3:40pm, 1422m

Brett Robb doesn’t send five runners to one Dubbo meeting without a plan, and three of them — Italian Made, Meldirer and Tucklan — line up in this final event alone. None arrives with a standout formline, but a trainer putting that much depth into one card at a track where he’s had 66 runners for better than a one-in-three placing rate is a pattern worth noting for the multis, even without a single standout among the trio.

The horse we’d actually use is Yeah Buddy, who has the most professional profile in the race — five placings from six runs without quite winning, and three placings from three runs in the past three months. That’s the profile of a maiden that’s overdue, not one to keep opposing. R P Northam, who also holds the each-way chance back in race two, trains winners at this track one start in five — the kind of return that explains why his runners keep commanding support — and MS M Weir takes the ride. The Beast and Texan Star have both shown minor-placed form without threatening to win, and look more like minor-money types than genuine winning hopes.

Value sits with Yeah Buddy to finally go one better. Win bet, each-way if you want the insurance.

Where the money goes

That’s the shape of our Dubbo racing tips for Friday: five races, one clear best bet and a couple of prices worth chasing. Godwits is the NAP. The gap between her red-hot recent trajectory and a quieter Dubbo résumé is the kind of mispricing we look for, and the 2406m trip plays to her strengths at a track that hasn’t yet seen her best.

Yeah Buddy is the value, a serial minor-placegetter that looks overdue to convert, with a strong stable in R P Northam behind her.

Panelli is the banker — a horse in the middle of its best recent form that won on its only previous visit to this track, partnered by the jockey colony’s most reliable placer in Clayton Gallagher.

Green Run is the each-way pick, the genuine course specialist on the card.

Course angle: watch Brett Robb all afternoon. Five runners at the one meeting, headlined by a three-strong raid in the last, tends to find a quinella even on days the stable doesn’t land the winner.

If Robb keeps stacking Dubbo cards like this, he’ll be the trainer to follow at this track all season.

Best bookmakers for today’s racing

None of our Dubbo racing tips mean much if you’re taking short prices. Comparing odds before you bet can be worth more than any tip on this page — half a point of overs on a short-priced favourite adds up across a season. Check the board above for operators licensed to take bets in Australia, and shop around before locking in a price, especially on Godwits and Panelli, where early support is likely to shorten them.
