Gawler Racing Tips 23 Oct 2026: Kayla Kruzen Make It Three?

Overview

Kayla Kruzen has been to Gawler twice and won both times, and it arrives for the Coopers Brewery Benchmark 64 having won its last two starts. That is the cleanest profile on a card that otherwise asks plenty of questions. The catch is 60kg and barrier 11, which is where the race gets interesting rather than straightforward.

Eight races on a Good track, starting at 2:40PM and running into the evening with the 2026 Gawler Cup over 1500m at 6:24PM and the Barossa Sprint to close at 6:54PM. The first three are maidens, which means plenty of lightly raced horses and thin form to work with. These Gawler racing tips lean on the runners with proven placings and on the riders and stables who keep finding the frame here. Below you will find a race by race read, the jockeys and trainers worth following at this track, and the plays we would actually put money on, including a quaddie anchor from Race 5 onwards.

Reading the Gawler card

Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one or two starts at Gawler, and only Lumber Dream has three, so there is no horse table worth printing. The jockey and trainer numbers carry more weight, and a few names stand out.

Jockeys at Gawler (5+ rides, riding today)

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Jacob Opperman 7 2 4 28.6 57.1
Will Price 11 2 6 18.2 54.5
Rochelle Milnes 23 4 12 17.4 52.2
Jake Toeroek 12 2 6 16.7 50.0
Brooke King 19 4 9 21.1 47.4
Kayla Crowther 23 4 9 17.4 39.1

Trainers at Gawler (5+ runners, starting today)

Trainer Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
S G Padman 10 2 7 20.0 70.0
A J Gluyas 10 1 6 10.0 60.0
Byron Cozamanis 5 1 3 20.0 60.0
Michael Hickmott 7 1 4 14.3 57.1
S P Gower 7 1 4 14.3 57.1
Aaron Bain & Ned Taylor 15 2 6 13.3 40.0

Rochelle Milnes is the rider with real volume behind her numbers: 23 rides here and she hits the frame in more than half of them. Teagan Voorham and Kayla Crowther have both ridden four Gawler winners from 25 and 23 rides respectively. A J Gluyas has three runners on the card and places six of every ten he brings here, which matters for Farnace, Maysoonfly and Dirty Old Town. Sarah Rutten and M J Seyers both send big teams, but neither strikes at better than one winner in seven at the track.

Gawler predictions, race by race

Race 1: Irongate Australia Mdn Plate, 2:40PM, 1100m

Vandaross has the profile you want in a three year old maiden: it ran second at its only start in the last three months, it has had six runs to learn the job, and it draws barrier 2 with Jacob Opperman aboard. Opperman’s Gawler record is small but sharp, two wins and four placings from seven rides. From that gate he can hold a spot near the speed and make them come to him.

Farnace is the one that worries us. It has placed in three of its last five runs without winning, which reads as a horse that is always there but needs things to fall right, and A J Gluyas places six in ten of his Gawler runners. With 53.5kg it gets in light. Vandaross to win, with Farnace the obvious saver in exotics.

Race 2: Matrix Solar Solutions Mdn Plate, 3:20PM, 1100m

Can Glock ‘N’ Roll go one better? It ran second first up and now comes back second up from barrier 6 with Teagan Voorham, who has four Gawler wins from 25 rides. The form line is short, but a good first up run from a spell often means the next one is the target.

Madam Moneybags is the danger and arguably the more proven Gawler performer, having placed at its only start here and run second last time out. Artful Maximus has been close enough (3354) without threatening to win. Glock ‘N’ Roll win, small saver on Madam Moneybags.

Race 3: Kingsford Hotel Mdn Plate, 4:00PM, 1500m

Shogun Chikara ran second on debut, and that run was at Gawler. That is one start, so treat it as a data point rather than a trend, but it is a better data point than most of this field can offer. The bigger issue is barrier 16 over 1500m. Jackson Murphy rides for Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor, a pairing that has five Gawler rides together for a win and three placings, and Murphy will need every bit of that local knowledge to find cover.

Mr Ribtickler draws the rail and has placed at its only Gawler start, with a third at its one run in the last 90 days. Rochelle Milnes rides, and she places in more than half her rides here. If Shogun Chikara gets caught wide, Mr Ribtickler is the one that benefits. Elrond keeps hitting the frame without winning (one placing from six recent runs). Shogun Chikara each way rather than win, given the gate.

Race 4: LJ Hooker Property Specialists/ Gawler & Barossa Hcp (C1), 4:40PM, 1200m

Stockman’s Choice is the horse to beat. It won last start, it has won its only Gawler outing, and Jackson Murphy rides for Bain and Taylor from barrier 4. The question is 60.5kg, the top weight, but a last start winner stepping into a Class 1 does not usually need a weight concession to be competitive.

Shamus In Pontivy is the one we think the market will undersell. Its form reads 435321, so it has improved at each of its last four runs, finishing with a win, and it has placed in both runs in the last 90 days. It drops to 54.5kg, six kilos under the topweight, with Stephanie Wright aboard. Maysoonfly has placed in all three runs in that window and both Gawler starts, so it is the each way type that rounds out the trifecta. Torrita also deserves a mention: one win and two placings from two Gawler starts for S G Padman, whose seven placings from ten Gawler runners lead the trainer table.

Stockman’s Choice to win, a saver on Shamus In Pontivy, and Maysoonfly in the trifecta.

Race 5: Coopers Brewery (Bm64), 5:20PM, 1200m

Two from two at Gawler, two from two in the last three months, and its last two runs both wins. Kayla Kruzen is the standout of the day. Form of 223011 says it took a few runs to find its feet, then clicked. Kayla Crowther has ridden four Gawler winners from 23 rides and has had nine placings, so she knows the track.

The negatives are real but manageable. Carrying 60kg from barrier 11 in a 1200m race means it will either need to cross or settle back, and a horse in winning form usually has the gate speed to do the first. Heart Of The Med is the main threat, having won two of its three runs in the last 90 days, and it carries the same 60kg from barrier 10. Trantoro won at its only Gawler start and could pinch a place.

Win bet on Kayla Kruzen, the best bet on the card.

Race 6: Magain Fielke Real Estate Gawler Hcp (56), 5:54PM, 1700m

Lumber Dream is the only horse on the whole card with three Gawler starts, and it has won one of them. More importantly, its last start was a win and it has placed in both runs over the last 90 days. Connor Murtagh rides for Garret Lynch, who has saddled 23 Gawler runners for three wins.

Win To Retire is the reliable one in the field: three placings from four recent runs, but no wins, and that pattern tends to repeat. The Punk Rocker won one of its last three and placed at its only Gawler start. At 58.5kg from barrier 6, Lumber Dream gets a fair deal. Win bet, and the value play of the day.

Race 7: 2026 Holdfast Insurance Brokers Gawler Cup, 6:24PM, 1500m

A big field, a few wide gates and no horse with Gawler form worth leaning on. This is the hardest race on the card to have a strong view on. Bootlegger gets the nod on class: it has earned $80,500 in four runs over the last 90 days, with a win and two placings, more prize money than anything else we checked in the race. Will Price rides, and he places in more than half his Gawler rides.

Dirty Old Town is the danger at the bottom of the weights. It carries 52kg, won one of its three recent runs, and A J Gluyas has a good record here. Sir Kingsford has drawn barrier 17, which undoes a lot of what its 120402 form promises. Bootlegger each way, small stakes. A cup like this suits a trifecta with a wide spread more than a confident win bet.

Race 8: Sportsbet Barossa Sprint (Bm64), 6:54PM, 1100m

Ramasis or Santastico? Ramasis draws barrier 1 under 61kg and has the better long form, 211635, but its two recent runs produced one placing. Santastico has run second in its last two (9022) and placed twice in three recent runs, and it gets 1.5kg less from barrier 7.

We side with Santastico because the form is fresher, and Caitlyn Munro takes the ride for M J Seyers. Ramasis is the obvious danger from the inside, and Ben Price on top places in half his Gawler rides. Santastico each way.

Where the money goes

NAP: Kayla Kruzen (Race 5, 5:20PM). Unbeaten at Gawler and in form; the weight and the gate are the only things that can beat it.

Value: Lumber Dream (Race 6, 5:54PM). A last start winner with the most Gawler experience of any horse on the card.

Banker: Stockman’s Choice (Race 4, 4:40PM). Won last start, has won its only Gawler outing, and the stable has it in the right grade.

Each-way: Farnace (Race 1, 2:40PM). Three placings in its last five runs and 53.5kg; it keeps finding the frame.

Course angle: Rochelle Milnes rides five today and places in more than half her Gawler rides. Her mounts belong in the exotics even when they are not the pick.

The Gawler racing tips quaddie runs from Race 5: Kayla Kruzen as the single, then go wide in Races 6 to 8. If Kayla Kruzen wins again under 60kg, its next start will draw a much bigger field.
