Moe Racing Tips 18 June 2026 — can Thornton lift again?

Racingbase Staff Racingbase Staff

Opening

There’s one thing I keep coming back to at Moe: when Damien Thornton is on the card, the whole day seems to get simpler. He’s ridden here four times for two wins and three placings, and that’s not a monster sample, but it’s enough to trust he rides the track with intent and doesn’t waste petrol. And when the races are mostly maidens and low-grade sprints like this meeting, intent matters.

You’ve got five races from 1300m to a testing 1765m, all on turf, and plenty of these are still learning their job. That means we lean harder on race shape, barriers, and which stables are placing horses to win rather than to get fit. These Moe racing tips are written like I’d text them to a mate: clear picks, one danger that can beat us, and what I’d actually do with my own money.

Moe — the setup

Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one Moe start at most, so don’t fall in love with 1-from-1 numbers. Where it is useful today is on the jockey and trainer side, because a few of them have meaningful volume here.

Race-by-race

Race 1: Ladbrokes Hosted Pots Mdn Plate — 13:00, 1765

If you want one runner in this opener that actually looks like it’s knocking on the door, it’s Always Free. One run for second is often the clearest “ready” signal in a maiden like this, and the Maher stable doesn’t travel them to country meetings to learn. The knock is the draw 14, because this trip at Moe can punish anything posted deep, but the weight drop to 126.7 helps if they have to roll and find a spot.

The horse I can’t ignore as a danger is Overpriced. Two starts for 3 and 5 is a proper foundation and it has placed on its only Moe visit, so at least we know it handles the circuit. Barrier 15 makes it a similar problem to Always Free, but if they go searching for the lead and get away with a steady first half, it can take a stack of catching.

Play: Win bet Always Free. Save on Overpriced if the market lets you.

Race 2: Dressed To The Nines Mdn Plate — 13:30, 1321

This is a classic “who’s actually progressing” 3YO maiden, and I’m siding with the one who keeps turning up and running well: Foxsky. The form line reads like a horse that’s already got the engine and just needs the right run, and you get a nice map from gate 7 where Jye McNeil can sit close enough to strike without burning early. It has placed on its only Moe start too, so it’s not walking into an unknown.

The threat is Barossa Bourbon from the inside. Barrier 1 at 1321m gives you options and M Aitken has a decent record at this track from limited opportunities. If Barossa Bourbon lands in the first pair and they don’t overdo it, Foxsky might have to be the better horse to get past.

Play: Win bet Foxsky. Exacta saver with Barossa Bourbon if you’re playing multiples.

Race 3: Hygain Mdn Plate — 14:00, 1321

Here’s the puzzle: do you trust the lightly raced upside, or do you take the older horses who’ve shown you enough to win a maiden? I’m taking the upside with Viperstrike. One start for third is the sort of debut that often jumps forward second-up, and gate 7 looks perfect to stalk rather than chase. The stable is capable of improving one quickly, and in a field where plenty have had their chance, that matters.

The danger is Too Tough. It’s only had two starts and has already run second and third, which screams “about to win one”. The issue is gate 13. If it gets snagged back and the race turns into a sit and sprint, it can be giving away too much start.

Play: Each-way Viperstrike (maiden with upside, but still lightly exposed). Small saver win on Too Tough if it’s priced like the best horse.

Race 4: Trafalgar Tyre Service Mdn Plate — 14:30, 1102

This is the best betting race on the card because the map and the intent look clean. Vintell is my pick and I want to be on early. Third on debut is often the right sign in these sharp 1100m maidens, and barrier 6 is the sweet spot at Moe where you can hold a spot without getting trapped on the fence. If Beriman can have it travelling and peel at the right time, it should get its chance.

The one that can beat it is Hardly Working purely because of the draw. Gate 1 is gold in a small sprint if the horse can begin, and you only need to be “fair” to run into the money when you save all the ground. The form is nothing to brag about (07-9), but maidens can flip fast when a horse gets a map upgrade.

Play: Win bet Vintell. Quinella saver with Hardly Working.

Race 5: Ladbrokes Place Extra To 10th (Bm56) — 15:00, 1102

The last is where most punters will try to get clever, but I’m keeping it simple: I want the horse with recent winning intent and a rider who knows Moe. Palazzo Dama fits that. The form line (750-31) says it’s trending the right way, and even from a wide alley 16, W Gordon can make a decision early instead of getting stuck in the wrong lane. If they’re running on down the outside late, it’s set up for a horse like this to swoop.

The obvious danger is Chartwell House. It’s in better overall form on paper (098212) and draws 3 to stalk the speed and get the first crack. If the leaders don’t go hard and it becomes a fence and sprint scenario, Chartwell House might pinch it before Palazzo Dama winds up.

Play: Win bet Palazzo Dama. If you’re playing safer, go each-way and include Chartwell House in your multis.

The plays

NAP: Vintell (Race 4, 14:30). Debut third, middle draw, and the race shape looks like it gives it a clean swing at them.

Value: Viperstrike (Race 3, 14:00) each-way. Lightly raced and capable of a second-up jump. You’re betting on improvement rather than hoping a seasoned maiden suddenly learns to win.

Banker for multis: Foxsky (Race 2, 13:30). It keeps running well, has already placed at Moe once, and McNeil’s overall Moe record is strong enough to trust with a tactical ride.

Each-way play: Viperstrike again if the price holds. In these maidens, the each-way ticket is often the smart way to back potential without paying for perfection.

Course angle: If you’re looking for one human factor to lean on, Thornton is the rider I want in the pressure moments here. He wins half his rides at Moe from four attempts and places three-quarters of the time, which is enough to treat him as a positive booking on this kind of program.

Keep an eye on how the inside lanes play in the first two races, because if the fence is hot early, it changes the way you price that wide draw on Always Free in the opener.

FAQ

What time does racing start at Moe today?

Racing starts at 13:00 with the Ladbrokes Hosted Pots Mdn Plate over 1765m.

Who are the top jockeys and trainers at Moe on today’s card?

Damien Thornton stands out: four rides at Moe for two wins and three placings. Among trainers with meaningful Moe volume, A & S Freedman are the ones you respect first here: six runners at the track for three wins and four placings.

What are the best bets at Moe today?

My Moe best bets are Vintell in Race 4 (14:30, 1102m) as the NAP, and Foxsky in Race 2 (13:30, 1321m) as the safest multi anchor.

Where can I find the best odds for Moe races?

Prices move quickly in these maiden-heavy programs. For Moe odds, check a few books before you bet, then take the best available price on your runner. If you’re using RacingBase tools, the race name and time make it easy to match the right market: for example, Race 4 Trafalgar Tyre Service Mdn Plate (14:30) and Race 5 BM56 (15:00).

Are there any runners with proven Moe track form?

Yes, but it’s mostly single-run evidence rather than deep history. Foxsky has placed on its only Moe start, Overpriced has also placed on its only Moe run, and Aussieaussieaussie won on its only start here (it goes around in the last).
