Best Bets For South Australian Derby at Morphettville
The South Australian Derby at Morphettville Racecourse is the next event in the Adelaide Racing Carnival. The feature race is a Group One contest for three-year-olds over 2500 metres.
On what is a strong card, the Adelaide Guineas and Adelaide Cup are fierce supporting races to the South Australian Derby. Here are the best bets for the Adelaide Racing Carnival fixture, including a selection in the big race.
BEST BET: STATUARIO
Race 8 (South Australian Derby)
Statuario booked his ticket for the South Australia Derby with success in the Elvis Thurgood Galilee Series Final at Caulfield on his latest start. He showcased his stamina in the Listed contest over 2400m.
Although he has yet to score at this level, the three-time winner remains open to improvement. He will relish the ground at Morphettville, and he has been handed the perfect draw in Barrier Three.
Statuario will be ridden in the Group One contest by John Allen, a jockey who has won the South Australian Derby four times. With such a large field, the experience of prevailing in this race is going to be invaluable.
The sole Derby winner in this field at Morphettville is Goldrush Guru. He was triumphant in the Victoria Derby last November. The local runner is sure to have his supporters – however, he has been handed a terrible draw in Barrier 18. That may prove too much to overcome for Andrew Gluyas’ runner in this $1 million contest.
Lavalier and American Wolf are just behind Statuario in the betting for the valuable three-year-old race, but they may have to settle for one of the minor honours behind David and Emma-Lee Brown’s colt.
SECOND BEST BET: HARRUMPH HARRUMPH
Race 7 (Adelaide Guineas)
Harrumph Harrumph has only had two starts so far in his career, but he has prevailed on both appearances. Greg Eurell’s runner is now stepping up in class for Adelaide Guineas and he looks good enough to pass this latest challenge.
The three-year-old gelding showed no signs of inexperience when he broke his maiden at the first attempt at Geelong (1400m) back in March, beating 13 other rivals. A month later, he doubled his tally with success at Sandown (1600m) Lakeside, taking advantage of Barrier Two in what was another smart performance.
Many of Harrumph Harrumph’s rivals here have featured more often on the track, including On Display, arguably his biggest rival. However, the gelding has a strong turn of foot which makes him the most likely winner of this year’s Adelaide Guineas.
BEST VALUE: GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS
Race 6 (Adelaide Cup)
Girls Girls Girls scored for only the second time in her career at Morphettville earlier this month. It was her first appearance at this racecourse, and she seemed to enjoy the venue. The step up to 2500m was also appreciated by the mare.
Although this return to the Adelaide racecourse will be a much tougher task, Girls Girls Girls should not be ruled out from successfully following up. She will be staying on strongly at the back end of this race when many of her rivals have cried enough.
The market suggests Sir Kingsford and Silent Surrente are the ones to beat here, but the value lies with Girls Girls Girls.
