Newcastle Racing Tips Oct 3: Can Puerto Banus Strike Again?

Overview

Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald are sending seven runners to Newcastle today, from the opening maiden through to the last event on the card, and that kind of volume from a city stable rarely happens by accident. But the horse these Newcastle racing tips keep circling back to isn’t one of hers — it’s Puerto Banus, who has started at the track only three times and never missed the placings once, winning two of those three runs — a record most horses twice his age would envy. Add in Mrs Flanders, a winner twice and a placegetter three times from her last five runs, and a card running from a nine-horse maiden sprint to a stacked Benchmark 68 feature, and there’s plenty worth digging into across the seven races. Read on for the full breakdown, race by race.

What Newcastle gives us today

Seven races on turf, running from the 984m sprint out to 1640m, and the card splits fairly cleanly in two — three maidens and plates stacked with lightly raced types, and four handicaps where the form lines are easier to trust. Course form worth noting: five runners today carry three or more runs at Newcastle specifically, enough to build a genuine picture rather than guess off a single run.

Horse Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Puerto Banus 3 2 3 66.67% 100%
Emalyn 3 0 3 0% 100%
Zousari 3 0 2 0% 66.67%
Abuse Of Power 3 1 1 33.33% 33.33%
Final Gift 5 0 0 0% 0%

Puerto Banus and Final Gift sit at opposite ends of that table — one who’s turned every Newcastle run into black type, the other who’s had five looks at the track without once reaching the placings. Both run again today, in Race 7 and Race 4 respectively, and the gap between them says plenty about reading course form on merit rather than just ticking a box for “has run here before.”

The jockey numbers carry real weight too. A Bullock, K S Latham and Mitchell Bell have each ridden here more than forty times, and their returns separate the volume riders from the ones actually getting results.

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Rebecca Bronett Prag 10 2 6 20.0% 60.0%
K S Latham 87 15 46 17.24% 52.87%
Mitchell Bell 77 11 39 14.29% 50.65%
Leeshelle Small 28 6 13 21.43% 46.43%
A Bullock 44 10 19 22.73% 43.18%
Jean Van Overmeire 50 9 20 18.0% 40.0%
R Hutchings 52 5 19 9.62% 36.54%

On the training ranks, John O’Shea and Tom Charlton have the standout numbers of anyone running today — better than six placings from every ten runners sent to the track. Nathan Doyle and Bjorn Baker aren’t far behind, and both have multiple runners on this card.

Trainer Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
John O’Shea & Tom Charlton 14 3 9 21.43% 64.29%
P Messara & L Gavranich 11 1 7 9.09% 63.64%
Nathan Doyle 42 8 24 19.05% 57.14%
Bjorn Baker 23 4 13 17.39% 56.52%
Michael Freedman 18 2 10 11.11% 55.56%
K J Parker 17 1 9 5.88% 52.94%
A & S Freedman 4 1 2 25.0% 50.0%

Race by race

Race 1: Cheer On The Newcastle Knights Mdn Hcp — 1:34PM, 1640m

Caviar has been knocking on the door in his minor placings and gets another look from barrier two under L P Beuzelin. He placed on his only previous run at Newcastle and has two placings from his last three runs this prep, carrying the topweight of 130kg in a maiden that otherwise looks fairly even. Whether he can turn placings into a win is the question, but a field light on genuine depth gives him the chance.

C J Waller fields three runners here — Phlox, Satono’s Shout and Palm Tree — and while none arrives with a standout line, Palm Tree’s improving figures (sixth, then second last start) make him the one worth watching if Caviar doesn’t go on with it. Too Expensive and Rye Manhattan are both capable of minor roles without threatening the finish.

Each-way Caviar, with a watching brief on the Waller runners.

Race 2: Klosters Hcp (C1) — 2:09PM, 1640m

John O’Shea and Tom Charlton don’t need reminding how to win at Newcastle — their runners here have placed in better than six of every ten starts at the track, among the best returns of any stable on today’s card. Sea Level fits the pattern, breaking through last start after finishing fourth the run before, and the 1640m trip looks within range for a horse building momentum.

Wallace Station complicates the read. He’s unbeaten in his only Newcastle appearance and has a win and a placing from two runs for Michael Freedman, a trainer with his own strong record at the track. If the speed in this race collapses in the straight, his turn of foot from off the pace could be hard to hold out.

Win bet Sea Level, with Wallace Station the each-way alternative if you want the bigger price.

Race 3: Equimillion 2026 — October Long Weekend Super Mdn Plate — 2:44PM, 1422m

Can anything be trusted off one or two runs in a fifteen-horse maiden plate? Not easily. Zousari is the exception with some genuine substance — two placings from his last four runs, and a similar record at this track specifically — but he’s yet to find the winner’s stall and the drop back to 1422m is unproven for him. Macaroon, a debut placegetter for Bjorn Baker, deserves a mention without inspiring real confidence. Hard to have a strong view in this one. If forced, Zousari for minor money on the strength of his consistency, but this is a watch race more than a betting one.

Race 4: Good Luck Equimillion Njc Sponsored Riders Mdn Hcp — 3:19PM, 984m

This sprint sets up as a tempo test over just 984m, with no obvious leader among the nine runners and the field likely to bunch rather than string out. Busy Bee has been the model of consistency with two runs for two placings, even if neither has been a win, and a race that bunches late suits a horse who travels through it rather than leads it. Wild Courage is the other with a workable formline, third and fourth in his two runs for C Maher, a trainer whose numbers at Newcastle hold up well. Final Gift carries plenty of experience at the track but five runs here without a placing says the query is the horse, not the circumstances. Each-way Busy Bee, nothing stronger.

Race 5: Tab Midway (Bm64) — 3:55PM, 984m

Mrs Flanders grinds; Valilee is supposed to sprint clear. The two formlines point in opposite directions. Mrs Flanders has won twice and placed in three of her last five runs, and two of her three Newcastle starts have ended in the placings — real substance for K J Parker’s yard. Valilee carries the profile of a classier type on paper, with a string of good figures earlier in the campaign, but her latest run was comfortably her worst of the prep, and the 139.9kg she’s carrying today doesn’t make the job any easier.

Karkadaan adds another layer — unbeaten in a single run at the track for J C Coyle, and still open to improvement as a lightly raced type. Abuse Of Power is capable of a minor role without threatening the finish.

Win bet Mrs Flanders. She’s doing the most right now, and the weight-for-age scale favours her over the headline name.

Race 6: Nzb (Bm64) — 4:29PM, 1312m

Imperial Royale arrives in the right form to go back-to-back, breaking through last start after finishing sixth the run before, and Bjorn Baker’s stable backs him with one of the stronger trainer records at Newcastle on this card. The 1312m trip looks within range for a horse building into his grade.

Beneath The Rock is the other winner in the race, taking out his latest start for K A Lees after running third the time before, and that stable’s volume at the track — two runners in this race alone — says the placement wasn’t random. My Phar Lady carries strong older form, but the long layoff since her last significant placing tempers the respect.

Win bet Imperial Royale, saver on Beneath The Rock if the two meet in the finish as the formlines suggest they might.

Race 7: The Prince Of Merewether Conditional (Bm68) — 5:09PM, 1422m

Puerto Banus grinds out the finishes; Ellofadude is doing it the explosive way. Both arrive at Newcastle’s feature race in career-best form, and between them they make this the best betting race of the day.

Puerto Banus already owns this track. Two wins and three placings from three career starts here is as good a course record as you’ll find on the card, and the picture doesn’t change much elsewhere — he’s won twice more and picked up a couple of other minor placings from his last four runs everywhere. Trainer P M Perry has sent more horses through the Newcastle winner’s stall than almost anyone training today, with over a hundred runners deep into the data. That’s not noise.

Ellofadude is the one closing the gap. He’s placed in both runs since his latest let-up, winning the most recent of them, and the form before that reads a win and two fourths — the shape of a horse building into exactly this kind of form at the right time for trainer Ben Blay. If the home turn opens up for him, he’s the one with the finishing speed to run Puerto Banus down.

Tulipwood deserves a mention too, a winner last start for the in-form Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald stable, which has sent seven runners to this meeting — a number that tells you the yard rates its team here more than most days. Chix and Hey Jude both have the figures to play a minor role without threatening the finish.

Win bet Puerto Banus, with Ellofadude the each-way danger if this turns into a sprint from the turn.

Where the money goes

Here’s where these Newcastle racing tips land when it comes to actually staking money.

Puerto Banus is the number one play of the day. He hasn’t missed the frame in three visits to this track, winning two of them outright, and the trainer behind him has found the Newcastle winner’s stall more often than most training today. Back him to win in Race 7.

Mrs Flanders is the value. She’s won twice and filled a placing three more times across her last five runs, for a stable that knows how to win at the track, and she’s taking on a field without an obvious standout. Odds weren’t available at the time of writing, but she’s worth checking regardless of price.

Sea Level is the banker if you’re building a multi — a horse who’s just broken through, for a stable with one of the best strike rates at Newcastle on this card.

Imperial Royale offers the best each-way credentials, a fresh winner who’s also capable of running to minor placings if the speed doesn’t suit him up front.

The course angle worth filing away: Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald have sent seven runners to this meeting. When a city stable brings that kind of number to a provincial track, it’s rarely just filling a float.
