The form line “64-24” says the horse has already found a level where it can put itself in the finish, and the booking of B Parnham reads like the stable wants the maiden cleaned up now rather than later. Barrier 5 is fine for a horse that should be positive without being suicidal early.
There’s also a small Northam hint: Spanish Armada has placed on its only start at this track. That’s not a trend, but it does tell you the horse handles the place, which is more than we can say for most of these.
The danger is Night Broker purely because Pike lands on for Simon Miller. No exposed form to lean on, but Pike in a maiden at Northam is never a booking you ignore. If he finds the lead or the right back, you can look silly very quickly.

I’d rather side with Chattahoochie. The form “25” is the cleanest on the page, barrier 3 keeps it out of trouble, and you get a rider who can rate: Holly Watson. Chattahoochie has had two visits to Northam for one placing, again not a big sample, but it’s at least shown it can cope here.

The shape is the whole story here. There’s speed scattered across the field and a couple who look like they’ll overdo it from awkward gates. That’s why I’m happy to lean on Clear Assault from barrier 1. In a 3yo maiden where plenty will be learning on the job, the inside draw is a weapon: hold a spot, don’t panic, and make the others come around you.
I also respect that it’s a S & J Casey runner on a track where they regularly find the money. This isn’t the sort of stable that needs everything to go right to win a Northam maiden.
The obvious danger is Diggers Shout because Pike takes the ride. Wide gate 10 is the knock, but Pike’s Northam record is strong enough that you expect him to have a plan inside the first 200 metres, not after the first bend.

Race 4: Swan Brewery Mdn — 14:34, 2406m
The contrast race: you’ve got horses who keep finding a place without landing the punch, and a couple who look like they’ll love the trip if the race becomes a proper staying test.
Thangoo is the one I want. Two starts for a 2nd and a 9th doesn’t look flash until you remember how quickly these staying maidens can turn into position and rhythm contests. Barrier 3 with C Johnston-Porter gives it every chance to land in the first half, relax, and actually see out the 2406 metres. If it settles, it can win off one run from the 600m.
The danger is Delicate Warrior. The form “023253” screams that the horse is honest and keeps giving you a sight. With Austin Galati aboard, you’re getting a rider who places well at Northam and is good at keeping a stayer balanced when the race changes tempo.
