Randwick Racing Tips 3 Oct 2026 — can Columbus boss the Midway again?

Randwick racing tips: the one angle I can’t get away from

Columbus turns up in the Midway carrying topweight and the sort of recent form that makes you stop mid-sip and re-check you read it right. Two wins from his last four, three top-three finishes in that same stretch, and he’s already won on his only Randwick start. That last bit matters, even if it’s only one run here. Some horses arrive at Randwick and look lost. Others handle the long straight and the build-up from the 600 like they’ve lived there.

We’ve only got three races on the parsed card for today (all on turf), but it’s a proper little meeting: a Midway over almost 2000m, then the two-year-old set pieces, the Arrowfield Breeders’ Plate and the Gimcrack. Below are my Randwick racing tips, written the way I’d talk it through with a mate: what wins the race, what can beat it, and what I’d actually bet.

Randwick — the setup

Going is not listed in the data provided, so I’m treating this as a standard Randwick read: big straight, tempo and barriers matter, and you want runners who can sustain a run, not just sprint for 150m.

Limited course form across today’s fields. In Race 1, only a handful have more than one Randwick appearance in the stats feed, and most of the two-year-olds are first starters by definition.

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
J B McDonald 131 33 71 25.19 54.20
N Rawiller 112 19 53 16.96 47.32
Tim Clark 108 17 46 15.74 42.59
Zac Lloyd 128 13 53 10.16 41.41
C Schofield 98 13 40 13.27 40.82

That’s the rider layer in plain English: if you’re leaning on a big-track decision, you want McDonald involved, and you don’t fear Rawiller or Clark making the right call either.

Race-by-race

Race 1: Midway (Bm72) — 12:05, 1969m

I’m with Columbus. It’s not a clever pick, but it’s the right one if the race is run honestly. He comes here off a profile you can bet into: his last four reads 1-152, and over the last 90 days he’s gone 2 wins from 4 and hit the frame three times (average finish 2.25). That’s not a horse searching for form, that’s one holding it.

The map looks kind to him too. Gate 5 lets McDonald hold a midfield spot without doing anything heroic early, and Randwick over this trip rewards the horse that can build, corner, then keep finding. Columbus has already won on his only start at Randwick, so while it’s not a trend, it’s at least proof he handles the place.

The one that can make this interesting is Doradus. He’s a different beast: older, hard fit, and he’s carrying himself like a horse who just keeps turning up and running his race. His 90-day stats are sharp: 2 wins from 4 and he’s placed in all four with an average finish of 1.5. Rawiller from gate 2 is a proper advantage if this turns into a sit-and-sprint at the 400.

Little knockout runner at the weights is Cabbucio (gate 8) for Joseph Ible. The stable’s Randwick numbers are strong on limited volume and Cabbucio’s form reads 31122. He’ll give you a sight if he gets the right run and Columbus has to go too early under 60kg.

Staking: Win bet Columbus. If you want insurance, save on Doradus in a smaller win saver rather than getting cute with exotics.

Race 2: Arrowfield Breeders’ Plate — 12:40, 1094m

This is the classic early-season two-year-old trap: you can have a view, but you can’t pretend you know. So I’m leaning on the things that are real on paper: barrier, stable intent, and the rider layer.

Fiji (gate 9) gets the nod because the booking says “ready to go”. Waller doesn’t need to throw McDonald on for a Randwick 2yo unless he thinks it can win first-up, and McDonald rides this track as well as anyone: he wins a quarter of his rides here and lands in the placings more than half the time (131 rides of evidence). From nine, McDonald’s job is simple: get across without burning petrol, or park one off and let the race unfold.

The danger I’d respect is Proverb (gate 5) for the Freedmans with Tim Clark. Clark’s Randwick numbers are solid over big volume, and gate 5 in a sharp 1100 lets him either hold the back of the speed or box-seat if the inside steps. If Fiji has to work early, Proverb is the one who gets the soft run and the first crack.

Staking: Watch race if you’re disciplined. If you must play, small win bet Fiji and keep it light. First-start two-year-olds can make geniuses of you or mugs of you in the space of 60 seconds.

Race 3: Keeneland Gimcrack Stakes — 13:15, 1094m

Here’s the puzzle: do you want the low gate with a sharp pilot, or do you want the powerhouse stable even when the draw is ugly?

She’s Supreme (gate 1) is the one I want onside. Gate 1 at Randwick in a 2yo dash is worth real money because it stops the chaos. McEvoy can hold a spot, not get posted, and make them come around him. With babies, that’s often half the battle.

The obvious danger is Everlasting Grace for C W McDonald with McDonald aboard from gate 5. The McDonald surname twice looks odd on the page, but the logic is clean: the best jockey at the meeting is on the horse, and that’s usually the stable telling you it’s not here for the experience. If she handles the occasion, she’s right in it.

If you’re looking for something to blow up the tote, keep an eye on Provata (gate 2) with Zac Lloyd. Lloyd rides Randwick well for a young hoop, and gate 2 gives him a chance to take all the bad luck out of play.

Staking: Each-way She’s Supreme. Save on Everlasting Grace if the market overreacts and gives you a backable price late. Otherwise, stay sensible.

The plays

NAP: Columbus (Race 1, 12:05). He’s in form right now, he’s drawn to get the run, and McDonald at Randwick is the most reliable weapon on the card. The 90-day record backs up what your eyes already see in the form line.

Value: Cabbucio (Race 1) as the light-weight improver with the right stable profile at Randwick. I’m not calling him a course horse, but I will call him a live chance if the topweights make their moves early.

Banker for multis: Columbus. Not because he’s unbeatable, but because his race shape is straightforward and his recent strike rate is the best anchor we’ve got on the meeting data provided.

Each-way play: She’s Supreme (Race 3). Low draw, a rider who knows how to get them balanced, and you’re not demanding she be a freak to run top three.

Course angle to keep: When you’re betting Randwick, start your thinking with who’s making decisions late. McDonald rides this place like a home game, and today he turns up on the runner I most want to be with and the 2yo that’s hardest to ignore.

Next time you’re pricing a Randwick handicap, treat a McDonald mount from a soft gate as the default position, then talk yourself out of it, not into it.
