BEST BET: CRAIG
Race 7
Craig picked up his second success in three starts when he scored at Caulfield last month. He powered home over a similar distance to this in a handicap contest. That was the fifth consecutive start that he had finished in the placings.
The four-year-old has the lowest weight allocation in this Sandown Stakes field, and he can use that to his advantage. He has also been handed a good draw, as he will come out of barrier five.
This is Craig’s toughest test of the season, but he can pass it with flying colours and land the first prize in this Group Three race.
SECOND BEST BET: FREIGHT TRAIN
Race 4
Freight Train was victorious at this course last month, winning an eight-runner handicap for three-year-olds. His record at Sandown is excellent, as he was also second here in a 14-runner field back in March.
Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr’s runner went close to successfully following up at Sale a couple of weeks ago. He had to settle for second place in that race behind Electric Impulse. That form is likely to look stronger as the year progresses.
Freight Train will be one of the frontrunners in this field, so his draw in stall 10 should not be a problem for him. He could take some pegging back if he is allowed to dictate the pace of the race from the front.
BEST VALUE: KEATS
Race 6
The most competitive handicap of the card at Sandown is the penultimate race. Despite this being an open contest, Keats makes a lot of appeal at the prices. He gave his rivals a lot of ground at Flemington on his latest run but was still able to finish fourth.
Don’t expect Keats to be doing too much in the early stages of this contest, but with several pace setters, he will be passing a lot of tired horses in the final 400m. This eight-year-old has the ability to win a race of this standard and it appears to be a great opportunity for him.
Berkeley Square is likely to go off as the favourite, but he should find this a much tougher assignment than the one he won at Flemington earlier this month.
