If you’re only skimming the card, start with the saddlecloths carrying B Rawiller. He’s been to Stawell four times in the sample we’ve got and won three of them. That’s not a “trend” I’m going to dress up as gospel, but it’s enough to treat his rides with respect, especially on a country circuit where a rider who can judge pace and cornering can steal lengths without looking flashy.
It’s a five-race program on turf, kicking off at 1:30pm. The meeting is maiden-heavy early, then we get a proper betting race late with the BM56 over 2187m where tactics and weight matter. These Stawell racing tips are written like you’d talk them through with a mate: who I want to be on, what can go wrong, and where I’d actually bet rather than pretend every race is a gift.
Stawell — the setup
Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one visit to Stawell at most, so I’m treating “track stats” as a pointer rather than a pillar.

Race 1: Busbiz Mdn Plate — 13:30, 1211m
Eighteen Months looks the right horse to anchor the day early. The formline reads like a horse that’s learned to race: 375-3, and that last-start third is the key, because it says he’s holding his spot in the finish rather than finding reasons late. From gate 4 he should land in the first half without spending petrol, and Jack Hill doesn’t need to be a Stawell specialist to execute a simple plan from there.
He’s also been racing well enough lately to trust him as a win chance rather than another “place-getter”. In his last 90 days he’s only had the one run, but it was a placing, which matters more than raw volume for a maiden like this.
The main danger is Hatalook (gate 2). The 4-4932 profile screams “ready to win one” and that inside draw can let Nugent either box-seat or lead if nothing else wants it. If the race turns into a sprint from the 400m, Hatalook becomes the one that can pinch it.

Race 2: Ritchies Iga + Liquor Mdn Plate — 14:00, 1429m
Here’s the puzzle: do you back the horse with a “close enough” profile, or the one with the map? I’m leaning to the profile.
Krasnoludek has been knocking on the door (93652) and that’s usually the maidens angle that pays when others keep betting “first starters with upside” on faith. He’s drawn 11 which isn’t pretty, but over 1429m at Stawell you’ve got time to find a spot, and R J Hurdle can roll in behind the speed rather than panicking early.
He’s also one of the few on the card with a Stawell visit: placed on his only run here (second), so we already know the track doesn’t knock him around.
The danger is Lucky Crimson. Only two starts, but he’s already run third, and he also has a placing from his only look at Stawell. If he controls the race in the first 400m, he can make it hard for the wider runners to circle.
Staking: Win bet Krasnoludek. If the market gets cute and he drifts, I’d be happier; if he’s very short from the draw, keep it to a smaller stake.
Race 3: Hewitt & Whitty Crt Mdn Plate — 14:30, 1757m
The contrast race. Durham looks like the one with upside at the trip, while Rhinestone Rory brings the “always there” vibes without the knockout punch.
I’m with Durham. The form (346-52) says he’s building, and this is the sort of maiden where a three-year-old who can stay a bit can put a gap on older, one-paced types when the sprint goes out of the legs late. Nugent rides, and while his Stawell record in the small sample doesn’t do anything for me, the booking fits a horse that needs timing more than brute strength.
The obvious danger is Stylish Prince coming off a second (7348-2) and drawn 5 to get the cosy run. If Meech has him in the first four and Durham has to cart wide from 13, you can lose the race at the corner.
Staking: Each-way Durham if the price is fair. If he’s over-bet from the “improver” angle, consider a quinella with Stylish Prince instead.
Race 4: Russ Studio Jewellers Mdn Plate — 15:00, 2187m
This is the staying maiden where I actually want to bet. Snitzel Von Kirk has the right recent profile and the right rider for the job. He’s 352 across his last three, and in the last 90 days he’s hit the frame two out of three. That’s the sort of consistency that matters when a lot of these are either trying the trip, trying to settle, or both.
Dylan Dunn stays on and that’s a positive in a race where rhythm matters. Gate 14 isn’t ideal, but over 2187m I’d rather be a touch wide and rolling than buried away on the fence behind a stop-start tempo.
Finance Merchant is the danger because he’s been living in the finish (4-32243) and if he finds the front or the one-one with no pressure, he can grind you into the ground. He won’t give you a big turn of foot to outsprint, but he’ll make you earn it.

Race 5: Manhari (Bm56) — 15:30, 2187m
The market problem here is simple: people will look at the topweight and flinch, but I’m not keen to bet against a rider who keeps winning here.
Jungle Jet carries 142.2, which is a proper ask, and he’s drawn 15 which forces Rawiller to make decisions early. Still, Rawiller has won three of his four Stawell rides in the available sample, and that’s enough to trust him to ride the horse, not the gate. If he can slide across without a war, he can control the race from the 1200m and make this a staying test rather than a sit-and-sprint.
The horse I fear most is Olympiad. The form 50-731 says he’s on the up, and he’s one of the few in the race with a strong recent 90-day record: two runs for a win and a placing. If Jungle Jet is forced to do work early, Olympiad is the type that can stalk and pounce while the topweight is feeling it late.
One more to keep safe is Pianta (gate 2). The 809522 suggests she’s found her level and keeps turning up, and that inside draw can turn into a cheap, economical run in a staying handicap.
Staking: Win bet Jungle Jet if the price compensates for the weight and gate. Otherwise, play it as a quinella or exacta around Jungle Jet and Olympiad.
Where the money goes
If you’re building your Stawell best bets today, I’d rather be narrow and confident than wide and hopeful.
NAP: Snitzel Von Kirk (Race 4, 15:00). He brings the right staying-maiden pattern: consistent recent placings (352) and a rider who suits a horse that needs a properly timed run.
Value: Durham (Race 3, 14:30) each-way. He’s improving and should relish 1757m more than some of the older, flatter-lining runners.

Course angle: follow B Rawiller at Stawell. Three wins from four rides here in the sample is enough to upgrade his mounts, even when the setup looks awkward on paper.
