Overview
Affaire Vue has been to Strathalbyn once and won, and it arrives with two wins from its last three starts. That makes the 4:30PM Rs0ly the race to build the day around, even if a fifth last time out took a little shine off. Todd Pannell keeps the ride, and he has won six races from 34 rides at this track.
The rest of the Wednesday card runs to seven races on a Good to Soft surface: three maidens to start, then four handicaps that make up the quaddie. These Strathalbyn racing tips work through every race, with live prices where the market is up (only the first two races were priced at the time of writing), a short list of the jockeys and trainers who actually win here, and a firm view on where the money should go. Expect a banker early, an each-way play in the biggest field and one small stable worth following twice.
Strathalbyn: the setup
The course form is thin at the top end. Only a handful of today’s runners have three or more starts at Strathalbyn, and only Enciphering has more than four, with five runs here and no win. The table covers the horses with at least three course starts.

Strathalbyn race by race
Race 1: Sportsbet Fast Form Mdn Plate, 1:35PM, 2242m
Empire Ruler has finished second, second, third and third in four runs over the last three months, and the market has noticed. At $1.90 with Ladbrokes it is no overlay, but in a staying maiden where most of the field is still chasing a first top-three finish, consistency is worth paying for. It ran third on its only Strathalbyn start, so the track holds no surprises, and the 2242m suits a horse that has been running on rather than stopping.
Rich Melody is the one to beat it. Three placings from five recent runs is honest maiden form, Brooke King has had 52 rides here, and $4.60 with Unibet looks about right. Lady Deeds ($5.00, Bet Right) ran second on her only course start and draws the rail, which counts over this trip.
Win bet on Empire Ruler, and it goes in every multi as the day’s safest leg.
Race 2: Woodside Butcher Mdn Plate, 2:10PM, 1476m
The market has Intimus on top at $3.20 with Unibet, and that prices in two straight thirds without asking whether the horse has another gear. Just Comet at $4.20 with Bet Right is the better proposition. It has placed twice from five runs this preparation, ran third on its only Strathalbyn visit and draws barrier 2, so A Stead can hold a spot without spending petrol.
The stable is the extra layer. Shayne and Chelsea Cahill have placed five of their eight Strathalbyn runners, and Stead won on one of his two rides for them, at Balaklava on 30 September. It is a small sample, but it is a booking that has already paid.
Intimus is the danger, and Hazel Fertier’s three Strathalbyn runners have all placed. Pure Pelt ($3.70, Bet Right) ran third at its only recent start and will improve. Just Comet each-way at the price, with Intimus as the saver.
Race 3: Sportsbet Jockey Watch Mdn Plate, 2:45PM, 1312m
Fourteen maidens, not much proven form and no market yet. Hard to have a confident view. If forced, it is Khorasan, which has placed twice in four runs over the last 90 days and averages a finish between third and fourth in that time. S G Padman places more than half of his Strathalbyn runners, and Kayla Crowther hits the frame here at a solid rate across 35 rides.
Barrier 11 is the worry over 1312m, and Gift Of Silence (second, then fifth in its two starts) is the one that could take advantage if Khorasan is caught wide. Nolabell ran third at its only recent run and is worth a look for the exotics. Small each-way on Khorasan, or treat it as a watch race.
Race 4: Holdfast Insurance Hcp (56), 3:20PM, 1312m
Does Zenacity‘s course record outweigh its patchy recent form? Three Strathalbyn starts have produced a win and two placings, so this horse is reliable at the track even if the last three months have been up and down: two top-three finishes, one of them a win, from five runs. Rose Hammond rides from barrier 6, which leaves room to settle midfield and use the straight.
Koratora is the danger. Three placings from five runs this preparation is the most consistent form in the race, and Alyssa Webb gets weight relief. Big Mav has placed in two of three course starts and carries topweight, while Willaston ran second at its only recent start and is better than the barrier suggests. This is a quaddie leg where you need cover. Zenacity to win, and include Koratora and Big Mav in the quaddie.
Race 5: G & J East Strathalbyn Hcp (56), 3:55PM, 2242m
Connor Murtagh and Garret Lynch have teamed up 48 times for 18 top-three finishes, seven of them wins, and at Strathalbyn they have four top-three finishes, one a win, from six rides together. That is the combination on Sandastan, which comes in with the best recent form in the race: three top-three finishes from five runs, two of them wins, and first, third and first in its last three.
The knock is the track. Sandastan has had two Strathalbyn starts and missed the frame in both, so the course record is a question rather than a positive. The form since then is good enough to look past it, and barrier 4 means no wide trip over 2242m.
No Mans Land is the danger. It has placed twice from six recent runs and once in two course starts, but carries topweight. Aitch d’Amico has placed in three of four course starts from the inside gate and suits the trifecta. Win bet on Sandastan.
Race 6: Strathalbyn Small Engines (Rs0ly), 4:30PM, 1750m
Affaire Vue is the bet of the day. It has won two of its last three starts, won its only start at Strathalbyn, and Todd Pannell has ridden six winners here. Pannell and J F Macmillan have three wins together from 14 rides, which shows the stable uses him when it means business. The fifth at its latest run is the only blemish, and it followed back-to-back wins.
Hamner Springs is the threat. Two wins from three Strathalbyn starts is an emerging pattern, and it has won twice from seven runs in the last 90 days. Barrier 12 makes it harder. Yorokobi brings the most consistent profile in the field, with four placings from five recent runs and an average finish inside the top three. It just doesn’t win often enough to beat Affaire Vue on its day.
Michael Hickmott wins a third of his Strathalbyn races, but Exalted Fire has not placed from four recent runs, so the trainer’s record is not enough here. Win bet on Affaire Vue, with Yorokobi each-way.
Race 7: Community Bank Fleurieu – Bendigo Bank (Bm56), 5:05PM, 1476m
Tour de Moon has run in the first three in five of six starts this preparation, with one win, and it placed at its only Strathalbyn start. That is the profile you want in a 15-horse Bm56 at the end of the day. It is the second Cahill runner with A Stead aboard, and the stable’s place rate at the track gives the booking some weight.
The worry is the weight, because Tour de Moon is topweight. Forever Waiting is the danger: three placings from five runs and an average finish around second, with a win among them. Frontpoint won its only start here and has one win from five recent runs, so it is the each-way roughie. Tour de Moon to win, with Forever Waiting in the exacta.

Where the money goes
NAP: Affaire Vue (Race 6, 4:30PM). A course winner in the form of its life, with two wins from three, and a rider who knows how to win at Strathalbyn.
Value: Just Comet (Race 2, 2:10PM), $4.20 with Bet Right. Placed on its only course start, draws to sit handy, and comes from a stable that places most of its runners here. The favourite has no more form.
Banker: Empire Ruler (Race 1, 1:35PM), $1.90 with Ladbrokes. Four starts, four placings over the last three months. Start the multi here.
Each-way: Yorokobi (Race 6, 4:30PM). Four top-three finishes from five runs. If Affaire Vue fails, this is the horse most likely to be there.
Course angle: Connor Murtagh. He has hit the frame in 22 of 48 rides at the track, and he is on Sandastan for Garret Lynch, a pairing with four top-three finishes from six Strathalbyn rides.
If the Cahill stable lands either of its two runners today, its place rate here will start to look like more than a small sample.
