Wyong Racing Tips: Can Oakfield Alaska Make It Four?
T J Bartley is sending four runners to Wyong today, and two of them look ready to win. Last Druid has taken out two of his past three starts and finished a close-up second in the other, while stablemate What A Gent has been racing to a placing standard in a moderate maiden. That kind of depth from one stable rarely happens by accident, and it shapes plenty of our thinking in this Wyong racing tips preview. There’s also Oakfield Alaska, unbeaten in three and about to find out whether that form travels up in grade and up in weight. Across the five races on the Wyong turf today, the strongest views trade on recent form and stable patterns rather than raw carrying weight, and by the time you finish reading you’ll know where we’re putting our money, who the danger is in each race, and where the market looks generous.
Reading the Wyong card
Official going hadn’t been posted when this was written, so take any surface read with a grain of salt until the final rail and track rating drop closer to the first. What we can say with confidence: course form across today’s fields is thin. Most runners have one or two starts at Wyong at most, so the deeper signal sits with the trainers and riders who know the track rather than the horses themselves.
Two names dominate the trainer numbers. John O’Shea and Tom Charlton have placed six of their eight Wyong runners without yet nailing one down, and M, W & J Hawkes have gone one better, winning four of seven. Below them sits a group of genuinely capable operators sending horses out today.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John O’Shea & Tom Charlton | 8 | 1 | 6 | 12.5% | 75.0% |
| M, W & J Hawkes | 7 | 4 | 5 | 57.1% | 71.4% |
| Peter Snowden | 19 | 4 | 12 | 21.1% | 63.2% |
| Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald | 36 | 8 | 21 | 22.2% | 58.3% |
| R A Bailey | 9 | 2 | 5 | 22.2% | 55.6% |
| David Pfieffer | 13 | 3 | 7 | 23.1% | 53.8% |
The jockeys’ room tells a similar story. N Rawiller places at 71.4 percent when he rides at Wyong, though that’s from only seven mounts, so treat it as an early trend rather than a certainty. The riders below him carry a heavier sample.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| N Rawiller | 7 | 2 | 5 | 28.6% | 71.4% |
| Zac Lloyd | 24 | 5 | 14 | 20.8% | 58.3% |
| J R Collett | 17 | 3 | 9 | 17.6% | 52.9% |
| Rachel King | 19 | 4 | 10 | 21.1% | 52.6% |
| Tom Sherry | 19 | 3 | 10 | 15.8% | 52.6% |
| Regan Bayliss | 23 | 2 | 12 | 8.7% | 52.2% |

Race by race
Race 1: Wyong Equine Clinic Midway Mdn Plate, 12:50, 1476m
Does anyone in this maiden actually want to win it? Nine runners go around and not one of them arrives with a formline that inspires real confidence. What A Gent has managed four places from seven runs across the last few months and gets J R Collett back on, a rider who places better than half his Wyong mounts. Classic Two is the alternative. Her trainer R A Bailey wins one in every five runners he sends to this track, a solid number, even though the mare herself has only managed two placings from five course runs. Nikki Hodgson saddles up both Algorithmic and Aelfwynn, but her stable hasn’t cracked a win or a place from three runners at Wyong, which counts against both. Each-way on What A Gent, and treat the rest of the field as a watch-only proposition.
Race 2: Bishop Collins Audit Super Mdn Hcp, 13:25, 1312m
Sixteen go around in this one, and the shape of it, a giant maiden handicap with a wide spread of barriers, means whoever gets the run of the race has as much say as whoever’s actually the better horse. Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald have committed three runners to it. Dragon Blood and Beautiful You both debuted with placings, and Chatoyer steps out without a start to her name. That’s a stable with a 58.3 percent place rate at this track putting real numbers on the board in one race. Our preference is Written Doll, who has been placed in all three runs this campaign for David Pfieffer, a trainer whose Wyong numbers stack up well: 23.1 percent winners and better than half his runners hitting the frame. Tim Clark rides her and knows how to get a horse into the finish even when the placings haven’t quite turned into wins. Dragon Blood, with Tom Sherry up, is the biggest threat given the stable strength, but with a wall of debutantes and lightly raced types around her, backing Written Doll each-way in a field this size is the sensible play rather than staking heavily on a maiden that hasn’t broken through yet.
Race 3: Hunter Petroleum Products Hcp (C1), 14:05, 1203m
Vain Temptress has done the one thing that matters in a Class 1: she won, impressively, on her only run back in work, and she does it for David Pfieffer, the trainer we’ve already flagged as one of the stronger operators at Wyong this campaign. Regan Bayliss takes the ride; his win rate is modest but he gets more than half his Wyong mounts into the placings, which fits a filly with obvious ability. The danger is Miss Trump, who’s fresh off a win of her own for Paul Snowden with K McEvoy aboard, though that single visible run in the window is a data point rather than a trend. Parthenon is the each-way watch: a win and a placing from two runs is a genuinely promising start, but it’s still only two runs. Vain Temptress to win, and back her with confidence.
Race 4: Central Coast Coolrooms Da Vinci (Bm64), 14:40, 1476m
The market is going to love Oakfield Alaska’s unbeaten run of three, but topweight at 136.6kg and a genuine rise in grade on the same day is exactly the kind of test that catches out perfect formlines. We lean toward giving her the benefit given how emphatically she’s won, though we’re not fully sold once weight and grade go up together. Copacabana looks the smarter each-way alternative. Her own recent record is modest, no wins but two places from three runs, yet she’s trained by M, W & J Hawkes, who win better than half their Wyong runners and place at 71.4 percent, arguably the strongest stable numbers on the entire card. Tyler Schiller, aboard Copacabana, adds another layer: he wins a quarter of his rides at this track. Ausbred Hed’n’tail, for Brad Widdup, the volume leader at Wyong with twelve wins from forty-one runners, rounds out the each-way calculations. If you want the safer route, take Copacabana each-way over backing Oakfield Alaska for the win alone.

Race 5: The Doylo Lifestyle Group Springtime Conditional (Bm68), 15:20, 1312m
T J Bartley doesn’t send four runners to one meeting without a plan, and this looks like the one he’s built the day around. Last Druid has won two of his past three starts and finished second in the other, a stretch of form that puts him at the top of this field on ability alone, and J R Collett has ridden him to two of those places already this year. Bartley’s own Wyong record, better than one winner in every eight runners across a decent sample of 23, only strengthens the case. Stablemate Titanium Miss is the other Bartley runner in the race, but her most recent run fell well short of the promising formline she showed earlier in the prep, so she reads as the swing factor rather than a genuine second string. Elsewhere, Olivia Twist has managed a placing from her past two runs for Brad Widdup and Zac Lloyd without threatening to win, and Nova Centauri arrives fresh off a win of her own, but neither matches Last Druid’s recent strike rate or the weight of stable form behind him. Win bet on Last Druid, with Olivia Twist the each-way saver if you want to spread the risk.
The plays
Last Druid is our best bet of the day. Two wins from his past three starts, a jockey who already knows how to ride him, and a stable sending out four runners today with a clear read on where the depth sits: that combination is hard to overlook in the last at Wyong. Copacabana is our value angle. Her own recent formline undersells her, but M, W & J Hawkes’ Wyong record, four wins from seven runners, says the market will likely be paying more than the horse’s raw formline suggests it should. Vain Temptress is the banker for anyone building a multi, a clean and impressive win on her latest outing in a race that doesn’t ask much more of her. For each-way cover, Written Doll’s record of three placings from three runs in a sixteen-horse maiden is as good a place case as you’ll find on the card. And if there’s a repeatable course angle worth following, it’s Brad Widdup. Twelve wins from forty-one runners at Wyong is the deepest and most consistent trainer record on today’s card, and he has three runners going around this afternoon. If Bartley keeps stacking runners into Wyong cards like this one, he’ll be the angle worth watching every time the circuit comes back here.
