Overview
Ocean’s Jen has finished in the first three in four of her five runs since mid-July, won one of them and ran second last time out, which makes her the most reliable horse on a Moe card short on reliable horses. She drops into the Valley Motor Group Hcp (56) over 1200m from a middle gate, and if she runs to that recent pattern she is the one they all have to beat.
Around her, Sunday’s seven-race program is a mix of three maidens and four mid-grade handicaps on a Good track, with the first at 1:50PM and the last at 5:20PM. These Moe racing tips lean on two things: the handful of trainers who keep producing winners at this track, and the runners whose recent form says they are close. Course form is thin across the fields, so the connections table below matters more than usual. Read on for a view on every race, a staking line for each, and the plays we would actually put money on.
Moe, the setup
Limited course form across today’s fields. Only three runners have been to Moe three times, and none of them has won here: Russian Roni has one placing from three visits, while Larryoctane and Rock Glory are yet to finish in the first three in three tries each. King Tagaloa, Devine Grunt and Tassadar are the only horses on the card that have won at the track.
The riders are where the volume sits. Six jockeys on the card have five or more Moe rides and at least three wins:
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zac Spain | 14 | 3 | 7 | 21.4 | 50.0 |
| Damien Thornton | 17 | 3 | 8 | 17.6 | 47.1 |
| Olivia East | 9 | 3 | 4 | 33.3 | 44.4 |
| J Maskiell | 36 | 4 | 12 | 11.1 | 33.3 |
| Bailey Kinninmont | 18 | 3 | 6 | 16.7 | 33.3 |
| J Noonan | 33 | 4 | 10 | 12.1 | 30.3 |
On the training side, a few stables clearly target this track:
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| J F Moloney | 9 | 2 | 6 | 22.2 | 66.7 |
| John Mcardle | 8 | 3 | 5 | 37.5 | 62.5 |
| M Price & M Kent Jnr | 8 | 4 | 4 | 50.0 | 50.0 |
| Jason Warren | 12 | 0 | 6 | 0.0 | 50.0 |
| Ben, Will & JD Hayes | 22 | 4 | 10 | 18.2 | 45.5 |
| R D Griffiths | 13 | 2 | 5 | 15.4 | 38.5 |
Two numbers on the other side of the ledger are worth knowing too. Luke Oliver has had 17 runners here without a winner, and Ms S Trolove has sent 16 without one finishing in the first three. Neither is a reason to rule a horse out on its own, but neither stable gets the benefit of the doubt today.

Moe racing tips, race by race
Race 1: Weblease Community Champions Mdn Plate, 1:50PM, 1200m
Bohemian Blitz has had two starts and run third in both, and one of those was at Moe. That is the kind of steady, no-surprises profile you want in a three-year-old maiden where half the field has shown little or nothing. John Mcardle trains him, and Mcardle has three winners and five placegetters from just eight runners at this track, so the stable knows what the course asks for. Lachlan King is still looking for a Moe winner from 11 rides, which is the one soft spot, but the horse has done the hard part already.
Iron Eagle is the danger. He has had one run, placed at it, and that run was here too. J Noonan has four Moe winners and takes the ride from barrier 2, which gives him the easier trip of the pair. If Iron Eagle has improved the way first-up placegetters often do, he can turn the tables.
Win bet on Bohemian Blitz, with a saver exacta reversing the top two.
Race 2: Energy Australia Mdn Plate, 2:25PM, 1100m
Is a single run enough to bet on? In this race it might have to be. Tickety Boo ran second on debut and has nothing else on her record, which is still better than most of these. Several of the older maidens have had plenty of chances: Barossa Bourbon, Welcometodetroit and Powershare have all been around without winning, and Zouie‘s best recent effort was a third.
The runner that could blow it open is Go Maggie Mae, a first-starter from M Price & M Kent Jnr. That stable has won with half of its eight Moe runners, and it does not travel here for a look. Mr Sapphire, from the J F Moloney stable that places two-thirds of the time at this track, has placed once in two runs this preparation but has gone backwards since.
Hard to have a confident view. Small win bet on Tickety Boo, and keep an eye on Go Maggie Mae in the market.
Race 3: Martin Cameron MP Mdn Plate, 3:00PM, 1600m
The Minstrel Boy draws barrier 1 and gets the softest run in a 1600m maiden that has lost four of its runners to scratchings. He has had two starts, placed once, and already earned more prizemoney in that time than anything else in the race has in the past three months. C W Mcdonald has had just one runner at Moe, and it placed. Beau Mertens is yet to win here from ten rides, but from the inside he only has to hold his spot and wait.
Pneuma is the one to respect. Trainer Peter Jaques has had one Moe runner and it won, and the horse has run in the first three in one of its two outings since July. J Bowditch has two wins here. If Pneuma gets a soft run, it is the one most likely to make The Minstrel Boy work.
Style Guide and Genomic have both had more chances and look like place hopes at best. Win bet on The Minstrel Boy.
Race 4: Gippsland Motor Group (Bm56), 3:35PM, 2050m
Two horses in this race have won at Moe, and they are worth putting side by side. King Tagaloa won on his only visit, and since mid-July he has a win and another placing from four runs. Devine Grunt also won his only start here, but he has managed one top-three finish from three runs since July. Bailey Kinninmont, with three Moe winners, rides King Tagaloa.
That gives King Tagaloa the edge, but the race is deeper than the course form suggests. Frank Express has run in the first three twice from five starts lately, has the lowest average finishing position of anything in the field over that stretch, draws barrier 2 and gets in light under Liana Wood. Over 2050m, the weight relief could matter late. Opus won within the last three months and placed on its only Moe start, and J Maskiell, the busiest rider at the track, is aboard.
King Tagaloa to win, with Frank Express each-way as the better-value saver.
Race 5: O & M Services Hcp (56), 4:10PM, 1000m
A 1000m sprint with no obvious leader on form, so the shape decides it. Several of these like to go forward, and that should suit something that can travel just off the speed and kick. Irresistible Sir fits. He has a win in his last six runs and placed in one of his two Moe starts, and Caitlin Hollowood gets a fair weight on him from barrier 4.
The worry is that his last two runs were well beaten, and Squazeemoto is the danger at the weights. He placed on his only Moe visit and carries the lightest weight of the main hopes with Bailey Kinninmont aboard. Bring The Thunder and Sleeping Tiger have each placed once from two Moe starts, but Bring The Thunder has joint top weight and trainer Luke Oliver is still chasing a first winner here.
Watch race. If you need a bet, a small one on Irresistible Sir.
Race 6: Valley Motor Group Hcp (56), 4:45PM, 1200m
This is the bet of the day. Ocean’s Jen has been in the first three in four of her five runs since July, with one win among them, and her last start was a second. No other runner in the field has more than one placing in the same stretch. Her two Moe runs have not produced a top-three finish, which is the only gap in the case, but the current form is a lot stronger than whatever she was bringing to the track back then.
Aaron Sweeney rides from barrier 8. That is fine at 1200m, and it gives him the option of sitting off the inside runners rather than being trapped behind them. Mont Saint Michel is the main danger. He has placed once in four runs lately, and J Maskiell’s experience at the track counts for something in a race like this. Gatsby Crown, placed in one of two recent runs, is the other with a claim.
Win bet on Ocean’s Jen, and use her as the anchor in any multi off this card.
Race 7: Peter Craighead Memorial Hcp (56), 5:20PM, 1600m
Spirit Angel grinds; Tassadar knows the track. The last race asks which of those counts for more. Spirit Angel has placed in three of her four runs since July without winning, so the place looks very likely and the win is the open question. Nathan Punch rides from barrier 4 and is still looking for a first Moe winner, and trainer Brian Mcgrath has had nine runners here without one, so this is a bet on the horse, not the connections.
Tassadar has won one of his two Moe starts, though his three runs since July have not produced a placing. If he has come back to his best on a track he likes, he is the one that can beat the consistent mare. Cable de Vega, placed twice in four recent runs, is the other horse to include.
Spirit Angel each-way. The place bet is the better part of the ticket.

Where the money goes
NAP: Ocean’s Jen (Race 6, 4:45PM). Four top-three finishes from five runs since July, and the latest was a second. In a race where few others have shown that kind of consistency, she sets the standard.
Value: Frank Express (Race 4, 3:35PM). Two placings from five recent starts, the inside draw and a light weight over 2050m. The market is likely to focus on the two course winners and leave this one at a better price.
Banker: Bohemian Blitz (Race 1, 1:50PM). Third at both starts, one of them at Moe, for a stable with three wins from eight runners here. A sound first leg for any multi.
Each-way: Spirit Angel (Race 7, 5:20PM). Three placings from four runs since July. Whatever beats her, she should be in the first three.
Course angle: M Price & M Kent Jnr. Four winners from eight Moe runners. Satoshi in Race 1, Go Maggie Mae in Race 2 and Staphani in Race 4 carry the stable colours.
If the Price and Kent stable keeps winning with half its Moe runners, it will be the first thing to check every time we preview this track.
