Overview
Revolt has raced four times at Mt Isa and won all four. That is the record every other horse on Tuesday’s card is measured against, and it lines up again in the Steejo Press Handicap with Mitch Goring in the saddle and Jay Morris in the trainer’s column. Goring and Morris have teamed up nine times at this track and won seven of them.
That partnership runs through the whole of our Mt Isa racing tips. Goring rides in all seven races, from the 12:35PM maiden to the BM58 at 4:10PM, and he is the only rider on the card with real volume here. Seven races on the dirt, all between 900m and 1450m, with small fields and plenty of horses that know the track. No markets were open when this was written, so these are form calls, and the value judgements will have to wait for the prices.
Reading the Mt Isa card
This is a meeting where course form genuinely matters. Eighteen of today’s runners have had at least three starts at Mt Isa, and a handful have been around the track long enough to tell us exactly what they are.
| Horse | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zephirine | 6 | 4 | 6 | 66.7 | 100.0 |
| Revolt | 4 | 4 | 4 | 100.0 | 100.0 |
| The Wellian | 4 | 1 | 4 | 25.0 | 100.0 |
| Polly Hoffa | 12 | 2 | 11 | 16.7 | 91.7 |
| Viking Valour | 5 | 2 | 4 | 40.0 | 80.0 |
| Buz Fuz | 6 | 1 | 4 | 16.7 | 66.7 |
| Last Ditch Effort | 12 | 3 | 7 | 25.0 | 58.3 |
| Napoleon Strike | 11 | 4 | 6 | 36.4 | 54.5 |
Only three of today’s riders have had five or more rides here, and one of them stands well clear. Goring has ridden 47 Mt Isa races for 16 wins and 31 placings. Nobody else on the card has won a race at the track from a meaningful sample.

Mt Isa race by race
Race 1: Sportsbet Mdn Plate, 12:35PM, 1200m
A seven-horse maiden where nobody has won a race, and most have been trying for a while. Oracle Of Omaha gets the vote because it has the one rider on the card who wins here regularly, and because its only run in the last 90 days produced a second. That is thin, but it is more than most of these offer.
Euphoric Miss jumps from barrier 1 and ran second twice earlier in its form line, though three runs in the last 90 days have not produced a placing. Kelai Kava ran third on its only start, which makes it the unknown quantity in the field. Small win bet on Oracle Of Omaha, nothing more.
Race 2: Trevor Morris Builders Plate (C1), 1:10PM, 1200m
Is Lilii Borea the horse that won twice, or the one that has run sixth and eighth since? It has had two Mt Isa starts, won one and placed in both, and its four runs in the last 90 days have earned $17,315, far more than anything else in this Class 1. The last two runs are the worry.
Babe Roth won two starts back and has a win and a placing from three recent runs. Makeminemilo picks up Goring and ran second two back. Cryptology is scratched, which leaves six. Lilii Borea each-way, because the class edge is real but the recent form says not to trust it with a win-only bet.
Race 3: Qh20 (Bm65), 1:45PM, 1450m
Zephirine has raced six times at Mt Isa, won four and finished in the first three every time. It ran second last time after three straight wins, and those four runs have been worth $26,100 in the last 90 days. Goring rides, which is the same combination that has done the damage here before.
This is the strongest form horse on the card, and the race shape suits. It is a small field over the longest trip of the day, so there is time for Goring to find the right spot from barrier 5 without needing luck.
The danger is Dark Harmony, which has been busy and productive: seven runs in 90 days, four top-three finishes including two wins, and a win on its only Mt Isa start. Regal Judgement also won on its only visit here for Bevan Johnson. The Wellian has placed in all four Mt Isa starts without winning more than once, and that makes it a place chance rather than a winner. Zephirine is the bet of the day at Mt Isa. Back it to win, with Dark Harmony as the exacta saver.
Race 4: Steejo Press Hcp, 2:20PM, 1200m
Four starts at Mt Isa, four wins. Revolt has never been beaten here, and its form line of 111021 says it won last time out as well. It has only had two runs in the last 90 days, a win and a second, so it comes in fresh rather than over-raced.
What makes Revolt so appealing is the booking. Goring and Morris have won seven of their nine rides together at this track, and Revolt carries the stable’s only runner in the race. When a trainer with that strike rate puts the leading rider on a horse that has never lost here, the message is not subtle.
Surfers Royale has run second at its last two starts and Napoleon Strike has won four of its 11 Mt Isa races, so both have earned respect. Last Ditch Effort has three wins here from 12. Contemporary is scratched. Revolt is the banker for any multi on the card. Win bet.
Race 5: Sportsbet (Bm50), 2:55PM, 900m
The sprint of the day, and the horse with the most Mt Isa experience in the race. Polly Hoffa has had 12 starts at the track for two wins and 11 placings, which means it has missed the frame here only once. Its last four runs produced a win and two more placings, and Hayley Saunders keeps the ride.
It’s A Power has placed in both of its recent starts and comes from barrier 1, the gate that matters most over 900m. Leucaena has placed in three of five Mt Isa runs but has not won one. Outcast Soldier is scratched. Polly Hoffa each-way; it rarely wins, but it rarely misses.
Race 6: Cnw Electrical Hcp (C3), 3:35PM, 1000m
Instigate and Whiskey River tell two different stories. Instigate has been the most consistent horse in the region lately, with seven top-three finishes from eight runs in 90 days, one of them a win, and it has placed in both of its Mt Isa starts. Whiskey River has won two of its three Mt Isa starts but has placed twice without winning from three runs in the last 90 days.
The race shape leans towards the horse that turns up every time. Instigate has finished second or third in each of its last four, and that kind of reliability is exactly what a Class 3 over 1000m rewards. Jimmyinthejungle has a win from six recent starts and the most prize money in the race, so it can’t be dismissed. Buz Fuz has placed in four of six here. Instigate each-way, with Whiskey River in the exotics.
Race 7: City & Country Realty (Bm58), 4:10PM, 1200m
Viking Valour knows this track as well as anything in the race: five Mt Isa starts, two wins, four placings for D R Ballard. Its form line of 121233 shows a horse that keeps finding the frame, and Aidan Holt rides from barrier 4.
Dance Wizzard is the one coming into form. Three runs in the last 90 days have produced a win and two placings, including a win last time out, and it has been in the first three at every recent start. A Bar In Paris is the Goring and Morris runner, and after what that combination has done here, its second on its only recent start is enough to keep it in the conversation. Viking Valour to win, with a saver on Dance Wizzard.

Where the money goes
NAP: Zephirine (Race 3, 1:45PM). Six Mt Isa starts for four wins and six placings, and three of its last four runs were wins. Nothing on the card brings a more complete case.
Value: Lilii Borea (Race 2, 1:10PM). No market yet, but two wins from four recent runs and the most prize money in a Class 1. If the last two runs push its price out, take it.
Banker: Revolt (Race 4, 2:20PM). Unbeaten in four at the track, with the jockey and trainer combination that wins seven times in nine here.
Each-way: Instigate (Race 6, 3:35PM). Seven top-three finishes from eight runs in 90 days. The place part of the bet should look after itself.
Course angle: Mitch Goring. He rides in every race, wins a third of his Mt Isa rides and places in two thirds. When he is on the Morris horse, the numbers get better still.
If Revolt makes it five from five, the Morris and Goring pairing will be the first booking to look for every time Mt Isa races.
