Overview
Eaglefurther has won three of the last four, is unbeaten in two Launceston starts, and keeps Kirra-Lee Lane, who has ridden seven winners from 18 rides for G J Stevenson at this track. The top weight of 59.5kg in the last race on the card is the only thing in the way, and whether it finally bites is the question worth staying up for.
Friday night under lights brings eight races on a Good to Soft surface, from a 1120m maiden at 6:00PM through to the 1620m Benchmark 64 at 9:38PM. These Launceston racing tips work through every race, with the jockeys and trainers who actually win here, a couple of horses with genuine course records, and a closing card of plays you can take straight to the multi. Fields are small to medium once the scratchings come out, which makes the speed map matter more than usual. Expect the name E Byrne Burke to come up more than once.
Reading the Launceston card
Course form runs deeper than usual tonight. Several of the better-fancied runners have been around this track plenty, which gives us real evidence to work with rather than guesses.
| Horse | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Obviously Good | 4 | 3 | 3 | 75.0 | 75.0 |
| Unfiltered | 5 | 1 | 4 | 20.0 | 80.0 |
| Johnnie Pinch | 5 | 1 | 4 | 20.0 | 80.0 |
| Who’s In Dev | 7 | 2 | 5 | 28.6 | 71.4 |
| Golden Meadow | 6 | 2 | 4 | 33.3 | 66.7 |
| Mastretta | 6 | 1 | 4 | 16.7 | 66.7 |
| Jenni The Cat | 3 | 2 | 2 | 66.7 | 66.7 |
| Artillery Fire | 5 | 2 | 3 | 40.0 | 60.0 |
| Team Heist | 6 | 2 | 3 | 33.3 | 50.0 |
| Mcveigh | 4 | 1 | 2 | 25.0 | 50.0 |
The jockey picture is lopsided. E Byrne Burke has ridden 118 times here for 34 wins, and nobody else in tonight’s colour room comes close on volume and strike rate together.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| E Byrne Burke | 118 | 34 | 60 | 28.8 | 50.8 |
| K Sanderson | 52 | 5 | 24 | 9.6 | 46.2 |
| D M Ganderton | 18 | 4 | 8 | 22.2 | 44.4 |
| A Darmanin | 38 | 6 | 16 | 15.8 | 42.1 |
| Codi Jordan | 80 | 11 | 31 | 13.8 | 38.8 |
| Kirra-Lee Lane | 60 | 9 | 19 | 15.0 | 31.7 |
| T Baker | 70 | 7 | 21 | 10.0 | 30.0 |
On the training side, G J Stevenson and Adam Trinder are the two to respect, both winning close to one race in four at the track. J K Blacker sends the biggest team, eleven runners across the night, but the stable’s Launceston strike rate sits around one win in fourteen, so numbers alone are not a reason to follow it.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| G J Stevenson | 88 | 21 | 48 | 23.9 | 54.5 |
| Monica Ryan | 18 | 3 | 9 | 16.7 | 50.0 |
| S Gandy | 96 | 10 | 47 | 10.4 | 49.0 |
| J L Keys | 54 | 9 | 26 | 16.7 | 48.1 |
| Adam Trinder | 85 | 20 | 38 | 23.5 | 44.7 |
| Barry Campbell | 59 | 10 | 26 | 16.9 | 44.1 |
| Jessie Bazan | 44 | 5 | 18 | 11.4 | 40.9 |

Launceston race by race
Race 1: Mayhem In The Mounting Yard Friday Night 20th November Mdn Plate, 6:00PM, 1120m
Nine maidens, not one of them with a win anywhere, so set expectations accordingly. Vabuiagi is the one I keep coming back to. Three of the last four starts have produced a third placing, including the only run of the last three months, and barrier 2 lets A Darmanin take the shortest way home. Darmanin hits the frame in better than four of every ten rides here, which suits a horse that simply needs to be in the finish.
Alpine Whiskey is the danger. A second last time follows two placings from six tries at Launceston, and Akimasa Phanthura’s claim drops the weight to 54.5kg. Hard to have a strong view in a race like this. Small each-way on Vabuiagi and no more.
Race 2: Book Your Xmas Party Now – Visit Website Tasmanianturfclub.com Mdn Plate, 6:38PM, 1420m
Who brings the most upside into a weak maiden? Sounds Of Peace has had one start, ran second, and did it at this track. That is a thin record, but it is a better one than most of these have built over six or seven runs. Awesome Orphan, for example, has had seven goes here without a win.
The connections tip the balance. G J Stevenson wins nearly a quarter of races at Launceston, and D M Ganderton has four wins from 18 rides here. A second career start over 1420m from barrier 8 is a reasonable spot for a horse still learning.
Ramiro is the one to beat. The three-year-old ran third then fourth in two starts and gets in with 56kg. Any step forward makes Ramiro the obvious threat. Win bet on Sounds Of Peace.
Race 3: Celebrate Our Jumps Jockeys 30th October Hcp (C1), 7:08PM, 1420m
A big field and a wide spread of barriers, which means the pace will be honest and the draw will cost some of them. Unfiltered handles that kind of race. A last-start winner, Unfiltered has placed in four of five Launceston runs, and the last three months read five runs for a win and another placing. Barrier 8 is not ideal in a big field, but the course record says this horse finds the frame here.
One honest caveat: K Sanderson and J K Blacker have not won together here in 12 attempts, though five of those finished in the placings. That pattern fits an each-way bet better than a big win play.
Toorak Lad also won last start and has a win and a place from two runs here. The problem is barrier 11 with the 59kg top weight, and D Pires will have to push forward early to stay in touch. I’m A Machine, placed twice from three Launceston starts and down at 54.5kg, is the one at a price that could fill a hole. Each-way on Unfiltered.
Race 4: Ladbrokes Launceston Cup Packages On Sale 26th October (Bm68), 7:38PM, 1220m
Obviously Good has won three of four races at Launceston. That is the headline, and in a field of six it carries real weight. The doubt is freshness. There has been no run in the past three months, so this is a first run back, and the market will likely price that in.
I think the track record outweighs the layoff. The last four runs before the break read a win, a fourth, a second and a third, so the form was solid going out. T Baker rides from barrier 4 at 57.5kg, a draw that should land them handy without being exposed.
The danger is Garcon d’Espoir, second in four of the last six and placed in both runs over the past three months. That profile keeps finding one better, but on 56kg this could be the night it doesn’t. Mastretta, placed in four of six here and in both recent runs, rounds out the realistic chances. Golden Meadow has two wins here but ran eighth last time. Win bet on Obviously Good, with Garcon d’Espoir the saver in the exacta.
Race 5: More From Tote With Ladbrokes (Bm68), 8:08PM, 2150m
J L Keys has three of the seven runners here, but the horse I want comes from elsewhere. Henley Extreme has won two of three starts in the past three months, running third in the other, and won on the only Launceston appearance. A third sandwiched between two wins is the shape of a horse in a purple patch.
Over 2150m the race should be run at a sensible gallop, and barrier 2 lets K Sanderson settle without wasting petrol. At 55.5kg, Henley Extreme gets in well against the Keys trio.
Of those three, Native Clan is the pick. Four runs in the last three months have produced a win and two other placings, and E Byrne Burke takes the ride. Johnnie Pinch is a Launceston regular with four placings from five starts here, but only one placing from five recent starts. Regal Hunter has placed in three of four recent runs without winning and could run a place again. Win bet on Henley Extreme, the banker of the night.
Race 6: Cressy Chaff Cutters Longford Cup New Year’s Day Hcp (C3), 8:38PM, 1420m
Jenni The Cat and Who’s In Dev arrive from opposite ends of the form cycle, and both are live. Jenni The Cat won last start, the only run of the past three months, and has two wins from three Launceston starts. Drew Tyson does not send many here, ten runners for two wins, but four of them placed.
Who’s In Dev is the course specialist of the race. Seven Launceston runs have returned two wins and five placings, and the Kirra-Lee Lane claim brings the weight down to 53.5kg. The worry is two runs in the past three months, neither of which finished in the frame. Back at the best track in the horse’s record, a return to the placings looks likely.
Artillery Fire has two wins from five here and won three starts back, so keep that name in the exotics. Team Heist also has two Launceston wins but ran ninth last start. Win bet on Jenni The Cat, and Who’s In Dev is the each-way play of the night.
Race 7: Jackson Security Newmarket & Baker Group Cup Bookings Open Now Hcp (C1), 9:08PM, 1120m
The stable move is the story. Adam Trinder and E Byrne Burke have teamed up 51 times at Launceston for 15 wins, and they last won together here only a week ago. They line up with Mcveigh, whose form improved at every start last time in, ninth then fourth then second then a win, with a win and another placing from four runs at this track.
There has been no run in the past three months, and 58kg first up is no free hit. Barrier 2 is a big help over 1120m, though, and the rider with 34 Launceston wins knows what to do with a gate like that.
Gilly’s Boy is the threat: one start, one win, and it came at Launceston. The top weight of 59kg is the counter. Olindah, the three-year-old, also won last start and gets in with just 50kg, which makes this one dangerous if Robyn Lynch can hold a forward spot. Win bet on Mcveigh.
Race 8: Ladbrokes Tote Win + 10% In October (Bm64), 9:38PM, 1620m
Five runners, one horse in form. Eaglefurther has won three of four starts in the last three months, placed in the other, and is two from two at Launceston. Kirra-Lee Lane and G J Stevenson have combined 18 times here for seven wins, the most recent earlier this month, which is a partnership worth following.
The 59.5kg is the only real knock. That is at least 1kg more than anything else in the race, and over 1620m it adds up. The field is small, though, and barrier 3 gives Lane the choice of spots. On current form, the weight looks like the handicapper catching up rather than catching this horse.
Kireina Marubrah is the danger, placed twice in five recent runs and picking up the Trinder and Byrne Burke combination, the same pair that makes Race 7 interesting. Fiorente de Legend ran third last start and could pick up the minor money. Strong win bet on Eaglefurther.

Where the money goes
NAP: Eaglefurther (Race 8, 9:38PM). Three wins from the last four and unbeaten at the track. Big weight has not stopped the winning run so far.
Value: Obviously Good (Race 4, 7:38PM). The first-up tag should push the price out, and that ignores three wins from four starts at this exact track.
Banker: Henley Extreme (Race 5, 8:08PM). Two wins and a third from the recent three runs, a win here, and a soft draw over the trip. The steadiest leg for a multi.
Each-way: Who’s In Dev (Race 6, 8:38PM). Five placings from seven Launceston starts and a handy claim. The recent runs have been flat, but this track brings out the best in this horse.
Course angle: E Byrne Burke. 34 winners from 118 rides here, plus the Trinder pair in Races 7 and 8. The Byrne Burke and Trinder combination wins close to three times in ten at Launceston.
If Stevenson keeps booking Lane for in-form horses here, that pairing will be the first thing to check on every Launceston card this summer.
