Gympie Racing Tips 24 Oct 2026: Who Wins the Gympie Cup?

Overview

Wally’s Boy has been to Gympie twice and won both times, and on Saturday he lines up in the 1030m Benchmark 65 off a last-start win. Two runs is a small sample, but it is the cleanest course record on a card where plenty of horses have been here before and few have kept winning. The feature is the Gympie Cup over 1600m at 4:32PM, a race that lost its top weight, Grinzinger Knight, to a scratching and now looks wide open.

Seven races make up the program, from an 850m Benchmark 45 at 1:01PM to a 1470m handicap at 5:09PM. These Gympie racing tips work through every race with a pick, a danger and a staking line, then finish with the plays we would actually back. Kayla Barker and N Thomas are the riders to follow, and T B Thomas is the trainer with the numbers at this track. Several horses are nominated for more than one race, so check the final fields before you bet.

Reading the Gympie card

There is real course form on this card, more than at most country meetings. Seven of today’s declared runners have four or more Gympie starts behind them, and one name keeps hitting the frame.

Horse Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Capiana 5 0 4 0.0 80.0
Mamaragan 4 1 4 25.0 100.0
Holiday Dreams 4 2 3 50.0 75.0
Braidwood Queen 5 2 2 40.0 40.0
Cosmic Proportions 5 1 2 20.0 40.0
Gold Revolution 4 0 2 0.0 50.0

The jockeys split into two groups. Barker and Thomas win at better than one in four here, and nobody else with a meaningful sample comes close.

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Kayla Barker 23 7 13 30.4 56.5
MS S Tierney 17 2 7 11.8 41.2
N Thomas 18 5 7 27.8 38.9
M Powell 6 1 2 16.7 33.3
Sophie Wilcock 17 0 4 0.0 23.5
Natalie Morton 6 1 1 16.7 16.7

T B Thomas has saddled 52 runners at Gympie for twelve wins and 25 placings. Kym Afford has the volume too, 43 runners for seven wins, with a record built more on placings than wins.

Trainer Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Kym Afford 43 7 23 16.3 53.5
T B Thomas 52 12 25 23.1 48.1
Rob Davidson 5 1 2 20.0 40.0
Melanie Finnigan 10 1 4 10.0 40.0
Jason Hancock 8 0 2 0.0 25.0
Malcolm Bailey 21 3 3 14.3 14.3

Gympie racing tips race by race

Race 1: Bmwca The Double Entry (Bm45), 1:01PM, 850m

An 850m dash with a big field rarely sets up for anything but the horse that jumps and holds the rail. Daiquiri Hill fits that brief better than most. The last start was a win, both Gympie runs ended in the first three with one of them a win, and N Thomas rides for T B Thomas, the trainer with the most winners at the track.

Braidwood Queen is the danger. She has two wins from five runs here and won last start, and at 57.5kg she gets the lightest weight of the declared runners. Joyful Conquest also won last time and placed at both Gympie starts, so this is not a one-horse race. Win bet on Daiquiri Hill, with Braidwood Queen in the exacta.

Race 2: Bmwca Vip Clients Race (Bm65), 1:41PM, 1030m

Wally’s Boy has done everything right at Gympie. Two starts, two wins, and he arrives off another win. Dale Smith rides for T B Thomas, and at 56kg he is well weighted against the top of the declared field.

The question is Hurricane Hall. He won last start too, he has won one of his two Gympie runs, and N Thomas is in the saddle. Over 1030m there won’t be much between them if both get clear runs. Cosmic Proportions has five Gympie runs for a win and two placings and fills out the exotics. Paper Cowboy is the one to be wary of in the market: six runs at this track without a placing, even though he has a win from six recent starts elsewhere. Wally’s Boy is our best bet of the day: straight win.

Race 3: Bmwca Local Legends Country Stampede Qualifier Hcp, 2:22PM, 1030m

Holiday Dreams knows the way around. Four Gympie runs have produced two wins and three placings, the last start was a win, and MS S Tierney rides for Kym Afford at 60.5kg. That combination of track record and current form is hard to find in this field.

Mamaragan is the safer place bet. Four runs here, four placings, one win, and four placings from six runs lately. N Thomas rides at 55kg, which gives him 5.5kg from Holiday Dreams. King Of The Vibe won his only run in the past three months and is the unknown. Win on Holiday Dreams, each-way on Mamaragan.

Race 4: Delma Gill Memorial Mdn Plate, 3:02PM, 1170m

Maidens are usually guesswork, and this one is no different. Hydrating ran second last start and has two placings from three recent runs, with one placing from two Gympie starts. M Powell rides for T B Thomas, and that stable’s numbers at this track make it the safest place to start.

Moonlight Odyssey has the better consistency: three placings from four runs lately, though no wins. Lustful Belle, with three placings from five recent runs, is the other. Josephine’s Boy has no placings from five recent starts or from two Gympie runs. Small win bet on Hydrating, or leave it alone.

Race 5: Bmwca Accountants Classic Burnett To The Beach Series Hcp (55), 3:47PM, 1170m

Capiana is the most reliable horse on the card at this track. Five Gympie runs, four placings. He hasn’t won here, but he finishes in the first three four times in five, and he has a win and three placings from five starts over the past three months. Dale Smith rides for T B Thomas at 59kg.

Mover And Shaker won last start and placed on his only Gympie visit, so he brings the danger. Mud ‘N’ Blood has won one of two runs here. With Wally’s Boy, Something Forjo and Kickatinalong scratched, the field is smaller than the nominations suggest. Capiana is the banker for multis, and a place bet if you want certainty.

Race 6: Brown, Macaulay & Warren Accountants Gympie Cup, 4:32PM, 1600m

The Gympie Cup lost Grinzinger Knight, the top weight and a winner from two runs lately, to a scratching. That reshapes the race. Capital Asset now carries 61kg and has the most prize money of the declared field over the past three months, with a win from six starts, and that win came last time out.

The booking says plenty. Kayla Barker rides, and she wins nearly a third of her rides at Gympie, seven from 23. The last-start win suggests the form is turning at the right time.

Balmierro is the value. He has been to Gympie once and won, ran third last start, and M Powell rides for Rob Davidson at 55kg, 6kg less than Capital Asset. Araminta won last start for the Gerans, and Hell Of A Prince, Davidson’s other runner, has placed once from two runs here.

The weight difference between the top pick and Balmierro is the main issue with Capital Asset. If the tempo is genuine, the lighter weights can come over the top. Capital Asset to win, Balmierro each-way.

Race 7: Bmwca Myob Business Success Hcp (55), 5:09PM, 1470m

Nitrogen doesn’t win often, one from seven lately, but four placings in that time make the horse the most consistent in the last. Jess Emmerson rides for R T Hay at 58kg. Southoftheborder is the threat, N Thomas riding for T B Thomas, with two placings from four recent runs. Von Bee and Kickatinalong each ran second on their only Gympie visit. This is a race for a place bet on Nitrogen rather than a win bet.

Where the money goes

NAP: Wally’s Boy (Race 2, 1:41PM). Unbeaten at Gympie from two starts and back off a win. T B Thomas runners win almost a quarter of the time here, and this one has already shown he likes the track.

Value: Balmierro (Race 6, 4:32PM). Won his only Gympie start and gets 6kg from our Cup pick. Every other horse in the race has to prove it can handle the track.

Banker: Capiana (Race 5, 3:47PM). Four placings from five runs at Gympie. A place in the first three is the closest thing to a sure thing on the card.

Each-way: Mamaragan (Race 3, 2:22PM). Four Gympie starts, four placings, and N Thomas riding at the bottom of the weights.

Course angle: T B Thomas has twelve winners from 52 runners at Gympie. Daiquiri Hill, Wally’s Boy, Hydrating and Capiana carry the stable’s colours today, and two of them are in our plays.

If the Thomas stable keeps producing horses who win at Gympie, the local form guide may as well start with them.
