Canterbury Stakes Runner-By-Runner Guide

2021 Canterbury Stakes Stakes Horses

1. BIVOUAC $2.90
The race favourite found the 1000m a tad too sharp when first up but he has never really fired when fresh and should be a force to be reckoned with at his second run back. He won the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at this stage last year, while he was runner-up in the Everest (1200m) in the spring. The son of Exceed And Excel has had two starts above 1200m for a win in the 2019 Golden Rose (1400m) and a 5th towards the end of his autumn campaign last year in the All Aged Stakes (1400m). Enjoys a big class edge on this lot and is a clear top pick.

2. DREAMFORCE $10
The George Ryder Stakes (1500m) winner from last year resumes and battled when fresh last year in the Winx Stakes (1400m) but has perfumed well when resuming in the past. A winner at his only start at the track and trip and will settle in the first few. Will take some running down.

3. SAMADOUBT $12
Resumes after 18 months off the scene but has been kept safe in the betting on the back of a couple of dominant trial performances. Won the Winx Stakes (1400m) when fresh in 2019 and is another that will head forward.

4. KEMENTARI $21
Broke a long run of outs by taking out a Group 3 race in Perth last December. That was his first win since the 2018 Randwick Guineas (1600m). Not for me and good luck if you back him.

5. VICTOREM $16
The six-year-old from Port Macquarie is a few lengths off the likes of Bivouac and it is hard to see him landing in the top three.

6. DAWN PASSAGE $12
Placed in the Silver Eagle (1300m), Golden Eagle (1500m) and the Gong (1600m) last year and resumes after a winning trial. Should be thereabouts on the heels of the placegetters

7. MASKED CRUSADER $6
The four-year-old was a bit costly last spring but resumed with a very nice win in the Southern Cross Stakes ahead of Southern lad recently. Went 7.7 lengths faster than standard, which is a personal best, but will need to raise the bar higher to get near the likes of Bivouac.

8. SAVATIANO $4.50
The stablemate of Bivouac sticks to the 1200m and defeated Kolding in the Expressway Stakes (1200m) when resuming. Has been kept fresh for this run and was runner-up behind The Bostonian in this race last year. She has drawn barrier 3 with Hugh Bowman to ride and should land in the top three.

9. MADAM ROUGE $26
An honest mare from the Chris Waller stable but probably better suited against her own sex.

10. MIZZY $101
Not here.

11. PRAGUE $26
Ran 3rd behind Peltzer in the Eskimo Prince Stakes but went just 0.1 lengths faster than standard and will need to lift on that.
