CHAMPAGNE STAKES BETTING SNAPSHOT

A field of six feature in the Champagne Stakes (1600m) and it is Fireburn that has been installed as as the $1.60 favourite with bet365 after the barrier draw. The Gary Portelli filly will be out to become just the seventh horse to claim the Triple Crown for the two-year-olds after claiming both the Golden Slipper (1200m) and the Inglis Sires (1400m) this season. Pierro in 2012 is the most recent to achieve the feat.

She’s Extreme will be out to spoil the party and is at $4, while Williamsburg ($9) and Let’srollthedice ($12) are other fancies. Counttheheadlights is at $29, while as much as $251 is available for Wealthy Investor.

CHAMPAGNE STAKES FORM ANALYSIS

Five of the six runners come out of the Inglis Sires. She’s Extreme settled handy in that race but was run down in the straight by Fireburn, going down by just over a length, while there were four lengths further back to Let’srollthedice.

Fireburn went 5.2 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which was a shade below the 9.1 lengths faster when winning the Golden Slipper. The daughter of Rebel Dane shows no sign of slowing down, however, and has produced the fastest last 400m in both of her last two runs.

Hard to make a case for the beaten brigade really. She’s Extreme might look to go forward and get away with some cheap sectionals here, while Let’srollthedice should enjoy the step up to the 1600m but was well beaten last time. Counttheheadlights is another that should like the 1600m but has eight lengths to make up.

Can an improving track lead to the downfall of Fireburn? Probably not. Her last three wins have been on the Heavy but she did win on the Good at Kensington on New Years Day ahead of Revolutionary Miss in a 2YO Handicap race. The runner-up out of that race nearly claimed the Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) a couple of runs later.

Williamsburg is the X-factor and has claimed his past two races. They include the Fernhill Stakes (1600m) last weekend so he is the only one that is proven over the trip. The Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained galloper won the T L Ballieu Handicap (1400m) prior to that and there have been decent gaps back to 3rd in both of those.

The downside is that his personal best is just 0.4 lengths slower than standard, which are the second worst of any horse in this field.

CHAMPAGNE STAKES TIPS AND BEST BETS.

Very hard to tip against Fireburn here and she should make history by joining the likes of Pierro as a Triple Crown winner. Like all of the youngsters that step up to the 1600m for the first time there are a few unknowns, but the way she has been finishing off her races suggests she should be just as powerful as in her recent wins. The $1.60 is short but worth taking both straight out and in multis.
