COOLMORE STUD STAKES BETTING SNAPSHOT

It is the Godolphin galloper, Cylinder, that is a $3.80 favourite for the first of the Flemington Group 1 races on Derby Day ahead of the Golden Slipper (1200m) winner, Shinzo, at $7. King’s Gambit is the only other runner in single figures and is at $8.

There are 19 contenders in action for the $2 million race and the Paul Preusker-trained Steparty is at $11 alongside I Am Unstoppable. Stretan Angel ($12), Ozzmosis ($13) and Tiz Invincible ($16) head the rest of them in the market.

COOLMORE STUD STAKES FORM ANALYSIS

10 of the field of 19 had their last start in Sydney, including Cylinder, who placed 5th in the Everest (1200m). He settled just behind the leaders and stuck on well to go down just over a length to Think About It. Shinzo was never really clear and finished 9th, beaten just over three lengths. Cylinder went 9.8 lengths faster than standard benchmark in the Everest, which is the best last start figure of any runner.

Kings Gambit is one of four last start winners in the field and claimed the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on October 7. He could only manage 3rd behind Archo Nacho at Flemington over the 1100m prior to that but improved when ridden more conservatively at Rosehill and might take a sit in this race. Mexico and Ozzmosis filled the minors behind Kings Gambit.

Butch Cassidy and Moravia drop back in trip after placing 4th and 6th in the Golden Rose (1400m). Butch Cassidy was beaten just half a length by Militarize and went 7.7 lengths faster than standard. He was half a length off Cylinder prior to that.

Steparty is one of the key local hopes and drops back from the 1600m after placing 3rd behind Griff in the Caulfield Guineas. He was three-deep in that race but kept fighting before tasting defeat for the first time. The blinkers go on the son of Artie Schiller, who was a winner at the track and trip earlier in his career. Veight also comes out of the Caulfield Guineas and was runner-up, while Scheelite was 7th.

Stretan Angel is one of three fillies in the race and claimed the Danehill Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on Turnbull Stakes day ahead of I Am Unstoppable and Don Corleone. She draws the grandstand side and will be running on. I Am Unstoppable might settle up front and should give a bit of a sight. Don Corleone has since run 3rd behind Arkansaw Kid in the Gothic Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

COOLMORE STUD STAKES TIPS AND BEST BETS

You could make a case for a number of these and the one I like is Kings Gambit. He might have turned the corner with his win in the recent Roman Consul Stakes and comes into this third up. The son of I Am Invincible has finished top three in all six of his career starts, including a Golden Slipper placing behind Shinzo and I Am Invincible. Not quite sure that barrier 2 is the place to be and Mark Zahra will need to plot a course in the big field. But at the price, he does look to be a solid proposition in the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
