GOLDEN SLIPPER BETTNG SNAPSHOT

Coolangatta has been installed as the $4.50 favourite with Sportsbet for the worlds richest two-year-old race. A field of 16 plus four emergencies have accepted for the $5 million affair and Sejardan ($7.50), Best Of Bordeaux ($8.50) and She’s Extreme ($8.50) are others under double figures.

Russian Conquest and Fireburn are both at $11, while Queen Of The Ball is at $15. The Blue Diamond (1200m) quinella horses, Revolutionary Miss ($19) and Daumier ($21) head the rest.

GOLDEN SLIPPER FORM ANALYSIS

Coolangatta has not been seen since claiming the Magic Millions (1200m) at the Gold Coast in January and will be out to break the record for longest gap in between runs for a Golden Slipper winner, surpassing Sebring (2008), who went 49 days without a run before claiming the Slipper in 2008.

Not sure I can have Coolangatta but we must respect the Maher/Eustace camp, who have proved that unorthodox methods can work with the recent Australian Guineas (1600m) and Victoria Derby (2500m) winner, Hitotsu, a case in point.

Coolangatta went 5.4 lengths slower than standard at the Gold Coast and has drawn out in barrier 11.

The Todman Stakes (1200m) for the colts and geldings is one of the tried and true lead up races over the years, providing six of the past 10 winners of the Golden Slipper, including Farnan in 2020 and Stay Inside last year. Four of those Slipper winners also took out the Todman.

This year it was Sejardan that went 4.2 lengths slower than standard benchmark. That was held on a Heavy track at Randwick and Shalatin is another to come out of the Todman, running out of legs late for 3rd.

The Reisling Stakes (1200m) for the fillies was on the same day and Seven Veils enjoyed a soft time of it up front before racing into the Slipper with a two length win. The Mark Newnham-trained galloper went 0.4 lengths faster than standard. Ojai peaked on her run for 3rd.

Other last start winners that come into the race are She’s Extreme, Best Of Bordeaux, Millane, Seven Veils, Rise Of The Masses, Fireburn and Queen Of The Ball.

She’s Extreme is on the back up after claiming the Magic Night Stakes at the track and trip last weekend and boasts the best benchmark figures of that group by going 5.7 lengths faster than standard. She will be out to join Kiamichi (2019) by claiming the Magic Night/Golden Slipper double.

Can it be a horse that comes up after having their most recent start in the Blue Diamond in Melbourne? Daumier comes in with the best last benchmark figures that any horse in this race has ever produced by going 6.2 lengths faster than standard benchmark, just pipping Revolutionary Miss at Caulfield.

The first five past the post in the Blue Diamond are all in action in the Slipper this year. Daumier had the charmed run and Revolutionary Miss was stiff. Jacquinot missed the start and rattled home, producing the best late splits. Sebonack chased hard for 4th.

GOLDEN SLIPPER TIPS AND BEST BETS

Finding a position early on is crucial in the Golden Slipper and speed should come from Best Of Bordeaux, Rise Of The Masses and Seven Veils. The likes of Coolangatta, Russian Conquest, Queen Of The Ball, Ojai and Lady Laguna all like to settle handy. Pace should be genuine and it might pay to look for one that is capable of staying in touch but also producing some slick late splits. There is no standout for mine in he Golden Slipper this year and am willing to risk Coolangatta. She’s Extreme might be peaking at the right time and I don’t mind her on the back up. She is one that can position handy enough that should have the petrol late in the piece. I wouldn’t be ruling out the Blue Diamond runners. We were on Revolutionary Miss in that race but the wide draw is a concern here. Jacquinot is one that can edge a little closer and if the breaks go his way he can challenge them.
