Golden Slipper Nominations – Where It All Begins

The most prestigious two-year-old race on the Australian racing calendar each year is the Golden Slipper. It is often considered to be one of the four major races each year alongside the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.

When nominations first open, there will generally be thousands of entries as trainers, jockeys and connections dare to dream that they will be the next Golden Slipper winner.

Winners of the Silver Slipper Stakes, Sweet Embrace Stakes, Skyline Stakes, Reisling Stakes, Todman Stakes, Magic Night Stakes and Pago Pago Stakes will be exempt from the ballot for the Golden Slipper.

Golden Slipper Barrier Draw – When, Where And How Is It Conducted?

The barrier draw for the Golden Slipper is often conducted at a barrier draw function. A representative for each horse will randomly select an item from the front of the stage and underneath there will be a number which will represent the starting gate that that horse has drawn.

We will know the final field and barrier draw sometime after 9am on Wednesday, March 18, 2025.

The Golden Slipper will be run at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Saturday, March 22.

Is There A Barrier Draw Bias in the Golden Slipper?

Looking at the barrier draws for each winner of the race since its inauguration back in 1957 when Todman won the race, there is no barrier draw bias.

Barrier one has seen the most winners with nine two-year-olds jumping from that gate. Barrier 14 shows that there is no bias in the race with six horses jumping from that gate.

In the past decade, there have been quite a few horses jumping from double-figure barriers which shows it is more about the horse’s ability rather than the starting barrier. This makes the Golden Slipper an entertaining race every single year.
