Moir Stakes Nominations – Entries For The Valley Sprint
The 2024 Moir Stakes nominations will be revealed on Monday, September 23, 2024.
Not every single entry will accept for the race but the nominations list gives a good indication about which horses are in contention for the race.
So what is the Moir Stakes? It is a Group 1 feature race held over 1000m at The Valley Racecourse on a Friday night. Horses aged three years old and upwards are eligible for the race which is a weight for age event.
Moir Stakes Barrier Draw – When, Where And How Is It Completed?
The final field and barrier draw for the 2024 Moir Stakes will be declared on Wednesday, September 25, 2024.
Computer software is used to produce the final field; a simple click of a button and each horse is randomly given a barrier for the race.

Is There Any Barrier Draw Bias in the Moir Stakes?
In the past 20 years, the winner of the Moir Stakes has come from barriers one through to nine. This is a combination of field size and also the track very much suits horses that can race on the speed.
The Moir Stakes is a blink and you’ll miss it type race that is over in about 57 seconds. Horses able to leave the gates well, such as Nature Strip, Buffering and champion mare Black Caviar often have an advantage in the race. Due to the smaller home straight, it is often hard to make up ground wider on the track in order to run down the leading horses.
With all of this information on hand, we can see that there is no barrier draw bias, but horses blessed with early speed do have a distinct advantage in their favour.
