RANDWICK GUINEAS BETTING SNAPSHOT

It is the Godolphin galloper, Aft Cabin, that has been posted as a $2.70 favourite with Palmerbet after the barrier draw, just ahead of his last start Hobartville Stakes (1400m) conqueror, Osipenko, at $4.60. Zou Tiger was runner-up in the same race and is on the third line of betting at $6.50. 

Matcha Latte is another to come out of the Hobartville Stakes and placed 3rd. He is at the $10, while Attrition is at $11 but is likely to tackle the Australian Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne. Communist, with Zac Purton on board, heads the rest of the 14-horse field (12 after the early scratchings of Holymanz and The Fortune Teller) at the $17. 

RANDWICK GUINEAS FORM ANALYSIS

Seven of the 12 runners come out of the Hobartville Stakes and it was Osipenko that prevailed in the dying stages from Zou Tiger. The winner settled just behind the leaders and gained the split at the 200m to score in narrow fashion. 

Less than half a length separated the first three past the post. Aft Cabin worked hard in the early and middle stages before going for home a long way out. Even though there were some excuses, I thought that the son of Astern was disappointing in the closing stages and I am keen to avoid him at the odds. 

Osipenko produced the fastest last 200m and gives the impression that the extra 200m should suit. Matcha Latte was first up and produced the second fastest last 200m to run 3rd. He was wide early then produced the fastest last 600m. 

The Hobartville Stakes is the tried and true lead up to the Randwick Guineas over the years but it might pay to look outside the form from that race this year. Attrition has some solid form but connections are expected to stay in Melbourne to run in the Australian Guineas (1600m) with the two three-year-old races on the same day, in what is another example of the sometimes puzzling scheduling of races between the NSW and Victorian authorities. 

I wouldn’t be ruling Lindemann out of contention, who steps up in grade after taking out a BenchMark 78 over the 1400m at Randwick on February 18. The Chris Waller-trained galloper has a bit of upside and led at a solid tempo to go 1:21.85 over the 1400m, which compares well to what some of the favoured runners have been doing over the same distance. 

Manzoice is another from the Waller camp and is first up after claiming the Victoria Derby (2500m) in the spring. He might need a bit longer but is one to keep an eye in late in the betting. Hard to make a case for Hollywood Hero and Cut On A Dime, while Communist and Promitto need to lift on their Hobartville Stakes performances. 

RANDWICK GUINEAS TIPS AND BEST BETS

Just about willing to overlook the Hobartville Stakes form but there is no obvious reason not to stick with Osipenko, who did win fairly and squarely in that lead up. For some value, I am rolling the dice on Lindemann. The Chris Waller-trained galloper looks to have come back in good order. He failed on a Heavy track at his only go over the Randwick 1600m but was should get the trip and was tough when just missing over the 1800m late in his spring preparation at Flemington last November. Pace looks a bit muddling here and he might take up the running with Kerrin McEvoy to ride.
