RANDWICK GUINEAS BETTING SNAPSHOT

The Randwick Guineas sees the three-year-olds in action at Group 1 level and Militarize is the $2.25 favourite after his effort to finish runner-up behind Fangirl in the Apollo Stakes (1400m), while the last start Hobartville Stakes (1400m) winner, Celestial Legend, is at $4.

Tom Kitten is a $7 chance, while Encap is the other contender in single figures at $9. There are 11 youngsters that have accepted for the $1 million affair and Les Vampires is at $14, while Fukubana ($18) and Ganbare ($19) head the rest.

RANDWICK GUINEAS FORM ANALYSIS

Militarize is the class runner and did enough when resuming. He settled just worse than midfield on what was an even tempo in the Apollo Stakes and just lacked the brilliance first up but went a healthy 11 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which is a five lengths better than the next best last start benchmark figure of any runner.

The Chris Waller-trained galloper improved three lengths on figures when second up last time, going from a 5th behind Cylinder in the Run To The Rose (1200m) before scoring in the Golden Rose (1400m) ahead of Encap. He was competitive later on in the Cox Plate (2040m) when a two-length 8th behind the world-class galloper, Romantic Warrior, going 16.4 longest faster than standard.

It is only Tom Kitten that has produced a comparable figure when going 13.4 lengths faster than standard to claim the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) last spring. Tom Kitten comes into this third up and wasn’t suited by the slow tempo in the Hobarville Stakes when 5th.

12 of the 14 runners in this race had their most recent start in the Honartville Stakes. Celestial Legend went 6.2 lengths faster than standard to score that day, settling just off the speed before producing the fastest last 400m and 200m.

Encap was brave in defeat and was posted wide without cover but stuck on well to fill the exacta, beaten two lengths. Not sure there are many, if any, that can turn the tables on the winner out of the Hobartville. Les Vampires led at a very leisurely clip and was 3rd.

Ceolwulf was a bit luckless but has four lengths to make up. He produced the third fastest last 200m, while Tom Kitten produced the second fastest late split. Pace in this race could be slow again with Les Vampires and Ganbare the only two obvious horses to go forward. Encap will be handy, while Militarize and Tom Kitten will be running on.

RANDWICK GUINEAS TIPS AND BEST BETS

Going with Militarize in the Randwick Guineas. The lack of early tempo is a concern but his form does look superior to this lot and I expect James McDonald to keep them within striking distance from barrier 4. The leading jockey has partnered the son of Dundeel on just one occasion for a win, which was on debut, but he has partnered him in a series of trials. We have to trust the form behind Fangirl, despite that horse going down last weekend behind Think About It. He will strip fitter for this and the 1600m suits the Champagne Stakes (1600m) winner from 2023.
