TANCRED STAKES BETTING SNAPSHOT
It is the Australian Cup (2000m) winner, Duais has been installed as the $2.90 favourite with Sportsbet after the barrier draw, just ahead of Think It Over at $4 and Spanish Mission at $4.50. Those two filled the trifecta behind Duais in the Australian Cup.
She’s Ideel is at $9 and also comes out of the Australian Cup, while Stockman ($12), The Chosen One ($15) and Angel Of Truth ($23) are next in line in the betting. Great House and Mightybeel are both at $26, while Sheraz ($31) and Avion Fury ($151) round out the field.
TANCRED STAKES FORM ANALYSIS
The Australian Cup is the key lead up according to the market and in the Flemington Group 1, Spanish Mission led them up at a very solid tempo, going 12.7 lengths faster than standard up until the 600m mark. The former import set sail for home a long way out before the Flemington straight caught up with him at the end. He did well to hang on for 3rd, beaten just under three lengths.
Duais settled back in that race and clearly loved the hot tempo up front, eventually going 15.9 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which are the best last start figures of any runner. Only Spanish Mission has produced something better in this field when going 18.2 lengths faster than standard en route to running 3rd behind Verry Elleegant in the Melbourne Cup (3200m) last year.
Think It Over appeared to have every chance in the Australian Cup when runner-up but it wold be foolish to write him off here. He comes into this fourth up and won three on the trot at this stage last time. Figures from those runs were not anything exceptional and he steps to the 2400m for the first time but he has a great winning strike rate of 33%.
Duais heads into this fourth up and weakened out of it over the 2400m in the Caulfield Cup in the spring. Spanish Mission is third up. She’s Ideel is the other to come out of the Australian Cup and struggled off the hot tempo that day. Fourth up last time she ran 9th in the Metrpolitan (2400m) but it is worth noting that the Bjorn Baker-trained mare was runner-up behind Sir Dragonet in this race last year.
Sheraz and Mightybeel come out of the Randwick City Stakes (2000m) and were 4th and 6th respectively behind Zeyrek. Sheraz went nine lengths faster than standard and the former import might have improvement to come at his third run this time in. Mightybeel has been up for a while and will need to improve.
Stockman was a winner in the Sky High Stakes (2000m) on a Heavy track at Randwick at his most recent start, while Great House was 3rd in the same race. The winner went 8.2 lengths faster than standard.
The Chosen One represents a bit of X-factor and comes over from New Zealand. He is fourth up and could only manage 14th at this stage of his last preparation in the Caulfield Cup but was excellent either side of that in the Naturalism Stakes (2000m) and the Melbourne Cup.
Angel Of Truth is on the back up after running 3rd in the Ranvet Stakes (2000m) last weekend, beaten seven lengths. He has not won since claiming the Australian Derby way back in 2019.
WHO ARE THE WET-TRACKERS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN THE TANCRED STAKES?
There are a few that love the mud and with more showers forecast in the lead up to Saturday at Rosehill, we can expect something in the Heavy range. Those that should be suited include Stockman, Sheraz and possibly Spanish Mission. Stockman is four from seven on the Heavy while, Sheraz is four from 12 on Soft or worse. She’s Ideel has a handy record on Soft or worse, while Spanish Mission is yet to race on the Heavy but is one from two on the Soft.
Question marks over Duais, Think It Over and The Chosen One. Duais is none form three on the surface. Think It Over has not won in four goes on the Heavy. The Chosen One is none from 14 on Soft or worse.
TANCRED STAKES TIPS AND BEST BETS
Looking forward to seeing Spanish Mission get out to the 2400m. Thought his run in the Australian Cup was first class, given how hard he went in the early to middle stages. His form before coming to Australia was world class and he should be suited by the step up in trip. Don’t mind him sitting on pace at Rosehill an if he handles the going he looks the one for mine.
