Top 5 William Reid Stakes winners.
1. BLACK CAVIAR (2011, 2013)
The William Reid Stakes was taken out on two occasions by Black Caviar. The first of those wins was in 2011 at her 10th career start, following on from her success in the Lightning Stakes (1000m) and the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) that autumn. In 2013, she packed out the Valley at what was her second last career start, cruising to a four length win from Kurata Queen. She took out the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) in Sydney after that before retiring with 25 wins from as many starts. 15 of those 25 were at Group 1 level.
2. APACHE CAT (2008, 2009)
Apache Cat is another two time winner of the William Reid Stakes, taking it out when it was known as the Australia Stakes in 2008 and 2009. The popular galloper with the baldy face won eight times at Group 1 level and after defeating Darci Brahma as a younger horse in the Australian Guineas (1600m), he developed into a top sprinter.
3. MISS ANDRETTI (2007)
Miss Andretti also won this race when it was known as the Australia Stakes back in February of 2007. She lined up as a $1.50 fancy that day and didn’t let punters down with a well timed run down the outside. That was the second in a streak of four victories that also saw her pick up the Lightning Stakes (1000m), Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and Kings Stand Stakes (1000m) at Royal Ascot.
4. SUNLIGHT (2019)
The recently retired Sunlight was a brilliant filly from the Tony McEvoy stable and was too good for them in this race in 2019. She led from start to finish that night, just as she did one start earlier in the Newmarket Handicap (1200m). She won those races at the age of three but was also a dominant two-year-old, claiming the Magic Millions (1200m) at the Gold Coast at the start of 2018 and running 3rd in the Golden Slipper (1200m) that year.
5. BOMBER BILL (2001)
While not quite near the class of some of the others on this list, Bomber Bill was a bit of a remarkable galloper and seemed to race forever in the early 2000s. In terms of race starts, he nearly racked up the ton, racing 98 times for 23 wins and he won this race in 2001. He was always competitive against the best, racing in Group or Listed level on 80 occasions for 17 wins and other major wins came in the Goodwood Handicap (1200m) at Adelaide as well as the Gilgai Stakes (1200m) on two occasions.
