The Group One All-Star Mile is one of the feature events on Super Saturday at Flemington. The race over 1600m is worth $2.5 million, and it will be the sixth renewal of the contest, which was first staged in 2019.

Here is a preview of this year’s All-Star which is back at Flemington, and a look at the best bets for the unique race.

BEST BET: MR BRIGHTSIDE

With 16 victories in his career, Mr Brightside has been one of Australia’s leading milers for several years, and despite being seven years old now, he remains at the top of his game. Ben, Will and JD Hayes’ runner has prevailed in three Group One races this season, with his latest triumph coming in the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield (1400m).

Mr Brightside’s record at Flemington is excellent. He has four wins at the Victoria venue. He prevailed over this course and distance back in November in the Group One Champions Mile, beating a strong field that included Pride Of Jenni, Fangirl and Broadsiding.

The son of Bullbars won this race in 2023 when it was held at The Valley. He also finished second last year at Caulfield. It is a contest his connections often have on their radar as one of his autumn targets, so expect him to be fit and fresh for this assignment.

Mr Brightside had to overcome a wide draw in the Futurity Stakes on his latest win which showed that he can overcome adversity. Craig Williams timed his run to perfection. He can do the same again and become the first horse to win the All-Star Mile twice.

SECOND BEST BET: ANOTHER WIL

For a five-year-old, Another Wil is a lightly raced horse, with only seven appearances on the track. He showed what he is capable of when landing the Group One CF Orr Stakes on his latest start, winning against Mr Brightside by a neck. A repeat of that run makes him a big player in the All-Star Mile.

Ciaron Maher’s runner only just made his debut as a four-year-old last season, breaking his maiden at the first attempt at Rosehill in the Group Three Doncaster Prelude over 1500m. He then jumped straight into Group One company in the Doncaster Mile at Randwick where he lacked experience but still finished seventh of 19 runners.

Another Wil began the latest campaign with two victories from his opening three runs. He showed no signs of rustiness to score on his seasonal reappearance at Caulfield (1400m). Two runs later, he was the winner of the Group Two The Damien Oliver at Flemington (1400m).

Rider Jamie Melham has established a great relationship with Another Wil. She will try to hold onto him for as long as possible in the All-Star Mile and then use his speed in the closing stages of the race. If the race pans out for him, he could be set for more success at the highest level.

BEST VALUE: PRIDE OF JENNI

Pride Of Jenni goes into this year’s All-Star as the defending champion, after winning the race at Caulfield. The seven-year-old has not been at her best this season, but with the ability she has, she should not be underestimated in this race.

The five-time winner prevailed in the Group Two Feehan Stakes at Moonee Valley back in the spring. She then ran a respectable second behind Ceolwulf in the Group One King Charles III Stakes at Randwick.

Unfortunately for her connections, Pride Of Jenni has beaten just one rival in the Cox Plate and Champions Mile on her latest two runs. She has been given some time to freshen up since then, though, so expect a much better performance on her return to the track.
