Randwick Guineas at Royal Randwick is one of the highlights on the calendar at the Australian racecourse. It features the Canterbury Stakes, Randwick Guineas, and so much more.

Here is a look at the best bets from the Sydney Autumn Carnival card from Royal Randwick, including a selection in the two Group One races.

BEST BET: SWITZERLAND

Canterbury Stakes

Switzerland has featured three times at Randwick during his career and has prevailed on all three of those starts at the royal racecourse. The sprinter made a name for himself at the venue as a two-year-old, landing the Group Two Todman Stakes on his final outing.

Chris Waller’s colt is now an established Group One operator. He won the Coolmore Stud Stakes earlier this season over 1,200m at Flemington. Under the hands of rider James McDonald, he led inside the final 400m of the contest, and he soon stretched away from his rivals for a comfortable success.

Unfortunately for his connections, Switzerland was not able to follow up on his Flemington triumph when he returned to the same racecourse for the Black Caviar Lightning more recently. He went off as a warm favourite for the race, but he had to settle for fourth place, with Skybird causing a huge upset.

Switzerland can be forgiven for his latest effort at Flemington. He should be much sharper for this assignment, as his last run came after over 100 days off the track. His return to Randwick is also a huge positive. The Coolmore runner can prove why he is one of the most exciting sprinters in Australia and enter the frame for a possible trip to Royal Ascot in June.

SECOND BEST BET: BROADSIDING

Randwick Guineas

Broadsiding was one of last season’s most outstanding two-year-olds in Australia. He won the Group One Champagne Stakes at Randwick, while major wins also came in the J J Atkins (Eagle Farm) and Produce Stakes (Eagle Farm).

James Cumming’s runner made a winning return to action in his first run at a three-year-old, beating stablemate, Traffic Warden, in a close finish to the James Squire Golden Rose at Rosehill.

The son of Too Darn Hot showed how versatile he is when stepping up to 2,000m in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. He finished third in the race won by Via Sistina. The colt was one of only two three-year-old olds in the field, and he came home ahead of some very good horses, including Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni.

Broadsiding warmed up for the Randwick Guineas with victory in the Group Two Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill just a couple of weeks ago. If he produces anything close to his best, he should be able to add another Group One triumph to his name.

BEST VALUE: HERE TO SHOCK

Canterbury Stakes

New Zealand-bred horse, Here To Shock, may have been underestimated in the market for the Canterbury Stakes if you are looking for the best value in the race. He showed exactly how good he is when landing the Group One Group Sprint at Te Rapa in New Zealand earlier this month, scoring by four lengths.

Although his form in New Zealand is hard to compare to what his rivals have achieved in Australia, the seven-year-old has featured here four times already this season. He has recorded victories at both Newcastle and Rosehill.

Ben, Will and JD Hayes’ horse will need to fare much better than he did the last time he was Randwick in the Big Dance. He could only come home in 10th place in that listed handicap. If you can forgive that run, there is a strong argument to suggest he should be much shorter than he is in the betting for this race.
