Overview
Star Martini has run second in both of her starts at Belmont Park and has not finished worse than second in any of her four runs over the past 90 days. She came back from Northam a fortnight ago with a win, and Race 5 is where she gets her shot at a first Belmont Park victory. Standing in her way is Reginetta, who is two from two and has never been asked a hard question.
That clash is the centrepiece of a seven-race Wednesday card on turf rated Good to Soft, starting at 1:39PM and finishing at 5:15PM. There are two restricted races for lightly raced types, one maiden, two Class 1 handicaps and two Class 3s, and the quaddie runs from Race 4 to Race 7. These Belmont Park racing tips go race by race. Bookmakers had not put up markets when this was written, so the prices you see on the racecards will be fresher than anything here. Keep an eye on William Pike all afternoon: he has ridden 64 winners from 184 rides at this track.
Reading the Belmont Park card
Good to Soft ground across the meeting rewards horses that have shown they can finish off in a bit of give. Course form among the horses is thin and mostly unflattering. Nobody on the card has more than five starts here, and none of the horses with three or more visits has won at the track. The ones that have hit the frame consistently are worth knowing.
| Horse | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| King Of The Town | 4 | 0 | 2 | 0.0 | 50.0 |
| Polyvanova | 4 | 0 | 2 | 0.0 | 50.0 |
| Leetron | 5 | 0 | 2 | 0.0 | 40.0 |
| Luna Ascending | 3 | 0 | 1 | 0.0 | 33.3 |
| Wicked Venom | 3 | 0 | 1 | 0.0 | 33.3 |
| Jelly Can Run | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |
The riders tell a much clearer story. Pike sits on top by a distance, winning roughly one ride in three here and placing on six in ten.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| W Pike | 184 | 64 | 111 | 34.8 | 60.3 |
| Chris Parnham | 121 | 20 | 54 | 16.5 | 44.6 |
| Lucy Fiore | 133 | 20 | 53 | 15.0 | 39.8 |
| C Johnston-Porter | 136 | 20 | 48 | 14.7 | 35.3 |
| Holly Nottle | 178 | 23 | 59 | 12.9 | 33.1 |
Among the stables, Mitchell Pateman has the best mix of volume and strike rate on today’s card, while MS J Erkelens wins with a quarter of her runners here.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| D M Luciani | 13 | 2 | 9 | 15.4 | 69.2 |

Belmont Park predictions, race by race
Race 1: Reliable Asset Maintenance (Rs0ly), 1:39PM, 1200m
Official Business is the one to beat and the best bet on the card. He has run four times in the past 90 days for two wins and two seconds, and every one of those runs came with Chris Parnham aboard. The progression is exactly what you want to see: a pair of seconds as a short-priced maiden, including over this 1200m at Belmont Park in September, then a maiden win at Northam and a step-up win at Ascot on 14 October over the same trip.
He carries top weight of 60kg, which is the price of winning, but he jumps from barrier 3 in a field of eight and should get a sweet run just off the speed. Parnham and N D Parnham have combined for four winners from 26 runners here, with half of them placing.
The stable’s other runner, Supersmash, is the danger. She won twice in quick succession in September, including at Belmont over 1000m, and Jason Li, who rode both wins, is back on. Two flat sixths since then are the worry, but with 54.5kg she gets plenty of weight relief. Clear Assault has placed in both runs in the window for S & J Casey and rounds out the exotics. Win bet on Official Business.
Race 2: Senturf Mdn, 2:14PM, 1400m
Hard to have a firm view. Four of the eleven have never raced, and the ones that have are mostly finding a way to get beaten. Lacey Marie is the most interesting of the exposed runners: she ran third at Bunbury on 7 October and third again here a week ago, both over 1200m and both at big odds. She placed on her only Belmont start. The extra 200m today is the unknown, but her recent runs are the best form in the race.
Venetian Gem is the unknown that matters, purely because W Pike takes the ride on debut. Birdiebirdie ran a respectable fourth first-up at Northam for N D Parnham. Small each-way on Lacey Marie, otherwise a watch race.
Race 3: MC Equine Surfaces Hcp (C1), 2:49PM, 1200m
Does a maiden win at Kalgoorlie carry over to a Class 1 in the city? That is the question with Budino, who finally broke through at Kalgoorlie on 18 October at 21/20 with Lucy Fiore. She keeps the ride, but Budino has been beaten in both of his starts at Belmont Park, and this is a different level of race.
I’d rather be with She’s A Splinter. Her last run was a solid third at Northam over 1300m, she placed on her only Belmont visit, and the booking of Pike stands out. He and Josh Brown have won with three of their ten runners together, and nobody on this card has a Belmont record close to Pike’s. Coming back to 1200m from barrier 8 is the one thing to manage, but Pike knows how to get that done here.
Intimidation Time is the danger. He won his only start in the window, at Bunbury over 1100m at 25/1, and gets in with 57.5kg. Gentle Touch won her only Belmont start but ran seventh at 90/1 at Ascot last time. Win bet on She’s A Splinter, with Intimidation Time in the trifecta.
Race 4: Drummond Golf Hcp (C1), 3:25PM, 1200m
Levati Dimezzo has the most solid recent form in the race and it comes straight out of a useful line. He ran second at Ascot on 14 October over 1000m with B Parnham, finishing ahead of Excelindeed in third and Jolson Al back in seventh. His overall form of 2622 shows a horse that keeps running the race you expect. He steps up to 1200m today, which is the main question. Barrier 1 lets B Parnham take the shortest route, and C & M Gangemi win with about one in seven runners at this track.
The knock is that he has more seconds than wins, so take that into account. Jolson Al is the danger on track form. He has had two Belmont starts, winning one and placing in the other, and Natika Riordan rides from barrier 3. If you put a line through the Ascot run, he’s live. Win and place on Levati Dimezzo, which is also the first leg of the quaddie.
Race 5: Lawn Pride Australia Hcp (C3), 4:00PM, 1000m
This is the race of the day and it sets up as a straight contrast. Star Martini is the reliable one. Reginetta is the unbeaten one. Only one of them can keep that tag after 4:00PM.
Star Martini has raced four times in the past 90 days for two wins and two seconds. She won at Northam on 27 August, then ran second in two Belmont races over this 1000m trip in September, the first of them as the 3/5 favourite. After missing an Ascot engagement, she went to Northam on 15 October and won at 29/20 with Holly Nottle, who rides again today. She has 55kg, barrier 2 and a jockey who has ridden 23 winners at this course. Put that together and you get a horse whose worst run in months is second.
Reginetta‘s record is two from two, a Northam maiden on 13 September and then a win at Ascot on 10 October over 1100m, both at 13/2. Those are lightly raced wins at a decent price, so the upside is real, but she has 57.5kg on her back today and has never raced at Belmont Park. J Whiting takes over from the rider who won on her both times.
Bosisto deserves respect as the third horse. He placed in all three of his starts in the window, winning one of them at Bunbury over this trip and running second here in September at 16/1, but 59.5kg from the outside gate is a lot to carry. Harbour Rise is a lightweight for D M Luciani, whose runners place better than two in three times at this track.
Star Martini to win. She is the banker for multis and the second leg of the quaddie. Saver on Reginetta.
Race 6: Glenroy Chaff Hcp (C3), 4:35PM, 1400m
The market tends to let Empire Of Rome go, and that is where the value lies. He won at Northam on 23 September over 1300m at 30/1, then backed it up with a second there on 15 October at 7/1 with C Johnston-Porter, who keeps the ride. That’s one win and two placings from three starts in the past 90 days, and today he steps out to 1400m, 100m further than his two runs at Northam. He drew barrier 3 and gets in with 56kg, while several of his main rivals carry more.
Polyvanova is the each-way play. She has placed three times in five runs over the past 90 days, including second here over 1300m in September and second at Bunbury over this 1400m trip on 7 October. Her Belmont record is two placings from four starts, and trainer Mitchell Pateman has won with 13 of his 65 runners here. She has 55kg and Giaan O’Donnell aboard.
King Of The Town also has two placings from four Belmont starts, the latest a second over 1650m in September, but two runs since then have been flat. Nickelplay, third at Ascot over this trip at 17/2, is the light-weight wildcard on 53.5kg. Win on Empire Of Rome, each-way on Polyvanova.
Race 7: Liquor Barons (Rs0ly), 5:15PM, 1200m
Twelve runners, most of them without a win in a while. This closing race is more about survival than confidence. Lieutenant Dunbar has the best recent profile: six starts in the past 90 days for a win and two placings, the win coming at Geraldton on 30 September as a 17/10 favourite over 1400m. He ran fourth at Northam on 15 October and now drops back to 1200m with Joey Azzopardi and 55kg. He has been beaten in two Belmont starts, so this is a case of form elsewhere making up for a lack of it here.
Slick is the one I’d fear. MS J Erkelens wins with about one in four runners at this track, and Brandon Louis rides. Surround Me finished fourth here in September but has only one placing from five runs in the window. Small win bet on Lieutenant Dunbar, and spread the last leg of the quaddie.

Where the money goes
NAP: Official Business (Race 1, 1:39PM). Two wins and two seconds from his last four starts, all with Chris Parnham, and he meets nothing today with a profile as strong.
Value: Empire Of Rome (Race 6, 4:35PM). He won at 30/1 and then ran second at 7/1, yet the market keeps underrating him. The step up to 1400m suits. Prices were not up when this was written.
Banker: Star Martini (Race 5, 4:00PM). She hasn’t finished worse than second in four runs over the past 90 days and has the inside draw with a rider who knows this track.
Each-way: Polyvanova (Race 6, 4:35PM). Three placings from five recent starts, two of them over 1300m and 1400m, and a stable that wins one in five here.
Course angle: W Pike. He has won 64 of his 184 rides at Belmont Park. He rides One Last Resort, Venetian Gem, She’s A Splinter and Jackpot Bingo today, and any of his rides that firms in the market deserves attention.
If Mitchell Pateman keeps placing runners here at this rate, his name will be the first thing to look for on every Belmont Park card for the rest of the season.
