Overview
Markos Port has finished in the first three at all three of his starts in the last 90 days, including a placing on his only visit to Hawkesbury, and that is the steadiest form line on a Tuesday card full of maidens and middle-distance handicaps. He drops into a Let’s Talk Mdn Plate over 1969m where most of his rivals have been beaten more often than not.
There are eight races, all on turf rated Good to Soft, starting at 1:15PM and finishing with a Class 1 sprint at 5:30PM. The first four are maidens, the back half is three BM64 Midways and that Class 1, and the quaddie runs from Race 5 to Race 8. These Hawkesbury racing tips go race by race, with live prices where the market was up when this was written. The early races had full markets; the last four did not, so you’ll find fewer numbers in the back half. One rider worth following all day is Zac Lloyd, who has won ten of his 36 rides here.
Reading the Hawkesbury card
The going is Good to Soft across the meeting, which suits horses that have shown they can stick on rather than the pure speed types. Course form among the horses is thin. A handful have three or more starts here, and only Ouragan has turned that into a consistent record.
| Horse | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ouragan | 3 | 1 | 3 | 33.3 | 100.0 |
| Derry City Felix | 4 | 0 | 2 | 0.0 | 50.0 |
| Banner Banner | 5 | 0 | 1 | 0.0 | 20.0 |
| Spud Gun | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |
| Circus Girl | 6 | 0 | 0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |
The riding stats carry more weight. Tom Sherry has only three winners from 30 rides here but places at 60%, and Zac Lloyd combines volume with a strike rate few can match at this track.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tom Sherry | 30 | 3 | 18 | 10.0 | 60.0 |
| Zac Lloyd | 36 | 10 | 21 | 27.8 | 58.3 |
| Rachel King | 39 | 8 | 21 | 20.5 | 53.9 |
| Tommy Berry | 44 | 8 | 23 | 18.2 | 52.3 |
| A B Collett | 44 | 6 | 22 | 13.6 | 50.0 |
| Tyler Schiller | 52 | 9 | 22 | 17.3 | 42.3 |
Among the trainers, two small but sharp operations stand out against the big Sydney stables.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M, W & J Hawkes | 17 | 6 | 12 | 35.3 | 70.6 |
| John O’Shea & Tom Charlton | 10 | 5 | 7 | 50.0 | 70.0 |
| Bjorn Baker | 41 | 8 | 23 | 19.5 | 56.1 |
| Peter Snowden | 20 | 4 | 11 | 20.0 | 55.0 |
| G Waterhouse & A Bott | 37 | 7 | 17 | 18.9 | 46.0 |
| C J Waller | 72 | 12 | 29 | 16.7 | 40.3 |

Hawkesbury race by race
Race 1: Hrc Motel Mdn Hcp, 1:15PM, 1203m
Water City is the one I want, and the market agrees at $3.30 with Ladbrokes. He ran third at his only start, and that start was here, so the track holds no surprises for him. Regan Bayliss stays aboard from barrier 5, and with 122.3kg he gets a handy pull on the top weights at 130kg.
The danger is a first starter. Darn Lucky ($8.00) jumps from barrier 1 for Brad Widdup, who has saddled seven winners from 52 runners here, and Zac Lloyd takes the ride. Qayed ($7.50) is the other one to respect, purely because the Hawkes stable wins with more than a third of its runners at this track, though his two starts so far (sixth and ninth) give you little to go on. Win bet on Water City.
Race 2: 10 Years Of Racing Mates Mdn Hcp, 1:50PM, 1422m
Is Romancastle about to finish the job? Fourth, third, then second at his latest run is the right direction, and he carries 126.7kg, a kilo and a bit less than Dwight. At $4.00 with Bet Right he’s not the favourite, which is what makes him interesting.
Dwight ($3.40, Bet Right) is the obvious threat. His form line reads 3-6-5-4-2 and his only placing in three runs over the last 90 days was that latest second, so he keeps running into the frame without winning. Tommy Berry rides him, and Berry places at better than 50% here. Arantu, a debutant for J C Deamer with Zac Lloyd on, sits between the two at $5.00. Romancastle each-way, with a saver on Dwight in the quinella.
Race 3: A Little Connection Goes A Long Way Provincial Mdn Plate, 2:25PM, 1640m
Classic Two has placed at all four starts in the last 90 days (third, second, third, second) and placed on his only Hawkesbury run. A horse that consistent in a provincial maiden usually gets his chance, and $4.80 with Bet Right is generous next to Victor The Warrior at $3.30, who has one start for a fourth.
Reece Jones has struggled here, two wins from 38 rides, so the jockey isn’t the selling point. The horse is. Victor The Warrior is the danger only because he’s lightly raced and could improve a lot second up. Navy Slippers ($8.00) has the best rider on paper in Tyler Schiller but has won none of three starts in the last 90 days. Win and place on Classic Two.
Race 4: Let’s Talk Mdn Plate, 3:05PM, 1969m
Markos Port is my best bet of the day. Third, second, third in his last three runs, all inside the past 90 days, and he placed at his one look at Hawkesbury. Over 1969m on a softish track he gets a staying test that suits a horse who keeps grinding into the placings. He’s $3.10 with Unibet and Regan Bayliss rides for G Waterhouse and A Bott, who have won with seven of 37 runners here.
Rye Manhattan ($4.20) is the one to fear. He was second at his latest start, gets 121.2kg against Markos Port‘s 130kg, and John O’Shea and Tom Charlton have won five of their ten runs at this track with Zac Lloyd booked. That weight pull matters at this distance. Vision In A Dream ($4.80) has placed in both of its recent runs and rounds out the trio. Win bet on Markos Port.
Race 5: ST Johns Park Bowling Club Midway (Bm64), 3:40PM, 1969m
Two last-start winners meet here, and they have very different profiles. He’s Got Grunt won his latest run and won his only start at Hawkesbury, and in the last 90 days he has a win and a placing from two runs. Tyler Schiller rides for Marc Chevalier, who has three winners from 14 runners here.
My Cartouche is the other. Her form reads 6-5-3-4-2-1, steadily climbing, and she gets in on 116.8kg against He’s Got Grunt‘s 131.1kg. That is a big gap over nearly 2000m. I lean to He’s Got Grunt because he has already won on this track, but My Cartouche could beat him if the weight tells late. Hussy la Vista has a win and three placings from six runs in the last 90 days and runs on for third. No market was open when this was written. He’s Got Grunt to win, small saver on My Cartouche.
Race 6: You Are Not Alone Midway (Bm64), 4:20PM, 1531m
Blow In won his only start here and has placed at all three runs in the last 90 days, including a win. Siena Grima rides at 125.6kg, and Rob Potter’s runner looks the most reliable in the field.
Newy is the danger: a win and another placing from two runs in the last 90 days, and third at his latest start. Superata won one of her two Hawkesbury starts, but she finished ninth last time. Blow In win.
Race 7: Racing Mates Bbq At Hawkesbury (Bm64), 4:55PM, 1531m
Alabama Charm and Ouragan show the race clearly. Alabama Charm has run four times in the last 90 days and placed every time, averaging a finishing position of 1.5, and she won at her latest start. At 124.5kg she gets weight from most of the field. Jean Van Overmeire rides.
Ouragan has placed in all three of his Hawkesbury runs, with one win, and has run in the first three at five of six starts in the last 90 days. He has not won any of those six, which is why he is my each-way play rather than the win bet. Mayleigh, with Tommy Berry on and three placings from three recent runs, is the one that could split them. Alabama Charm to win, Ouragan each-way.
Race 8: It’s Ok Not To Be Ok Hcp (C1), 5:30PM, 1203m
Angel Hair is the safest horse on the card. She won her only start at Hawkesbury, followed a fourth with a win at her latest run, and Zac Lloyd rides for Matthew Smith, who has seven winners from 38 runners here.
Low Down won on debut and Scuro Star won her only Hawkesbury run, so both could still be improving. Of the two, Low Down at 121.2kg gets more weight relief. Angel Hair to win, and she’s my multi anchor.

Where the money goes
NAP: Markos Port (Race 4, 3:05PM). Three runs, three placings, and the 1969m on Good to Soft should suit a horse who keeps grinding into the placings.
Value: Classic Two (Race 3, 2:25PM). Four placings from four recent starts and $4.80 with Bet Right while a horse with one run is the favourite.
Banker: Angel Hair (Race 8, 5:30PM). A course winner with Zac Lloyd aboard. She’s the leg to build the quaddie around.
Each-way: Ouragan (Race 7, 4:55PM). He has never missed a place here, and his recent placings say he will be there again.
Course angle: Zac Lloyd. Ten winners from 36 rides here, and he rides Darn Lucky, Arantu, Rye Manhattan, Malbork Castle and Angel Hair today. The Hawkes stable winning with more than a third of its Hawkesbury runners is the other angle to keep.
If O’Shea and Charlton keep winning with half their runners here, Rye Manhattan could be the first of many Hawkesbury winners for them this season.
