BEST BET 🏆
Race 2: No.8 SMOOTH SAILING ($3.10 with Ladbrokes)
The Mark Newnham-trained SMOOTH SAILING was most impressive on debut and looks ideally placed here for back-to-back victories today. Last start, the Your Song filly stepped out for her first race and was ridden a treat by Tom Sherry. Settling mid-field, Sherry let the speeders fight it out up front and saved the filly for a big finish, which she produced. Inside the final 200m, the three-year-old slapped on an amazing turn of foot and passed them in a heartbeat, going on to cross the line 1.5 lengths ahead of them. Her time of 1:02.8 was just 1.6 secs outside the track record for the 1100m, set by Fearless Jonny back in 1995, and she ran that time on a soft track. An impressive debut is more like an understatement. Whatever beats her here should be winning the race.
NEXT BEST 🥈
Race 5: No.2 OXFORD VISION ($4.20 with Palmerbet)
The Kim Waugh-trained OXFORD VISION has been giving Tom Melbourne’s runner-up record a real fright of late but well placed here, he can bring up career win number three today. Last start, the Panzer Division gelding came off a narrow win on this track when he recorded his third runner-up finish in the past four starts, finishing second in a BM64 Hcp over 1100m at Hawkesbury. He drew the fence that day but blew the start badly, coming out almost sideways, leaving him two lengths last on settling. Jay Ford did a super job to get him into his rhythm and finish off nicely, still taking ground off the winner as they crossed the line. Perfectly drawn again here in gate two, if he leaves the machine with them today, he should settle in the first half dozen, more than likely on the fence. He boasts a strong record on the Gosford track and with a trouble-free run here, he gets his chance to return to the winner’s circle.
BEST VALUE 💰
RAce 7: No.3 CEASEFIRE ($6.50 with Unibet)
Scone-based visitor CEASEFIRE sees the Gosford track for the first time today and boasting a strong fresh record, could give this contest a real shake. Last start, the Panzer Division gelding ended his last campaign finishing mid-field in a BM72 over 1250m on Randwick’s Kensington track. That was his sixth start for that preparation and his last as trainer Paul Messara sent him to the paddock for six months. Returning to work last December, he has run in two trials since, finishing third in his latest effort. Aaron Bullock returns for today’s contest and he boasts three wins from four previous rides. Already a two-time winner when resuming, the five-year-old leaves the machine from gate three today and maps to settle in the first half of the field. All things going well, his fresh legs should see him fighting out the finish here.
