Race 7:  No.2  SIR MING  

Local galloper, SIR MING has run himself into top-shelf form this preparation and looks set to dominate proceedings here today. Improving with every run this campaign, the Shalaa gelding gave his rivals an absolute belting last start when he put almost four lengths on them in a Class 4 Hcp, here over 1300m. Sent out a $2.15 favourite, he didn’t disappoint as he led from barrier to box and never looked like losing that day. He has more weight to contend with today but at his peak here, he should still prove too strong in the end. Trainer, Danielle Seib has her eyes glued on a shot at the Country Championships Qualifier with this fellow and a trouble-free run in this contest should see him in good steed for a crack at that in the coming weeks.

Race 3:  No.2  OPAL FIELDS

The John Thompson-trained OPAL FIELDS resumed with a bang at Newcastle and looks well placed here to go on with it today. Last start, the Deep Field filly was fresh off a 21-week spell when she came out and clobbered them in a 900m Maiden. With Keagan Latham in saddle, she settled mid-field and at the 150m mark, took control and went on to win by two lengths over the line. Going off that effort, she draws nicely in gate five and has Latham sticking with her today and a clear run to the line indicates she can frank that maiden win and go back-to-back in this contest.

Race 1:  No.3  DAS KAPITAL  

The Ciaron Maher-trained DAS KAPITAL is third-up today and in-form as he shoots for back-to-back victories here. Last start, the Written Tycoon gelding came off an unplaced, first-up effort in the city when he returned to the country scene and broke through for his maiden win over 1200m at Gosford. Despite being caught three-wide without cover to the turn, he still had too many guns for them in the end, crossing the line more than a length clear with Jason Collett aboard. Lousie Day is the new pilot here and the three-year-old again has to deal with a wide gate as he jumps from barrier eight in the 10-strong field. If he can cross and settle near mid-field (with cover), he looks the one to beat today.
