Grafton Tips 05/03/2023

Our form expert provides Grafton tips for today’s horse racing at Grafton Racecourse and gives his best bets.

Race 1:  No.3  SIR HAVACHAT  ($5.50 with bet365)

The locally-trained SIR HAVACHAT is second-up today and with the winkers on for the first time, shoots for back-to-back victories here. Last start, the Snitzel colt picked up where he left off last preparation with a win in a Class 1 Hcp over 1000m at Ballina. With Matty McGuren aboard, he showed plenty of fight as he held off the challenges to take home the major prize that day. He has a little work to do here, crossing from gate seven, but he still maps to lead them on settling. McGuren remains in the saddle and fitter for that first-up win, he will take beating here.

Race 5:  No.2  ECHOES OF MY MIND  ($4.60 with Palmerbet)

In outstanding form this preparation, the Paul Shailer-trained ECHOES OF MY MIND faces similar company to his past three events and looks a rock-solid chance of bringing up career win number three today. Last start, the Echoes Of Heaven gelding made it five podium finishes from his six starts this time in when he beat all but one home in a BM58 Hcp, here over 2220m. He looked home inside the final 100m but in a deceiving finish, he grabbed by one (Scilago) out in the shadows, right on the line. Luke Dittman is back aboard today after steering him to victory, here three starts back. He has drawn wide today but if Dittman can get him settled near mid-field with cover, he already has the runs on the board and is capable of taking out this contest.

Race 3:  No.4  BERKINSON  ($13 with TAB)

Third-up today, Port Macquarie visitor, BERKINSON sees the Grafton track for the first time here but still looks well placed in this field to be considered a contender. Last start, the Your Song gelding wasn’t far away when finishing fourth in a Class 1 Hcp over 1250m at Taree. Now fitter for two runs back, he should be ready to show his best today. Ray Spokes is back in the saddle after steering the five-year-old to a win and a minor placing from two previous rides. He steps up to the 1400m today and with a trouble-free run, he should give a us a bold sight and is well worth an each-way ticket here.
