Mackay Tips 14/02/2023

Our form expert provides Mackay tips for today’s horse racing at Mackay Racecourse and gives his best bets.

BEST BET 🏆

Race 7:  No.1  YULONG SOVEREIGN  ($2.30 with Palmerbet)

Ricky Vale saddles-up track specialist YULONG SOVEREIGN here who drops sharply in grade today and looks the one to beat here. Last start, the Zoustar gelding was third-up when he finished third in a Class 6 Hcp over 1200m at Rockhampton. Sent out a $1.95 favourite, he tried to lead all the way, but in the four-horse race, the two lightweights got the better of conditions (on the Soft 6 track) and finished ahead of the two more fancied runners that day. We’re on a Good 4 today where the five-year-old has won five of six on dry tracks and here he boasts three wins from five visits to Mackay, including two at the track and distance. He still carries top-weight today but gets relief from a 2kg claim and drops from Class 6 company to a BM65 here. Most lights here are ‘green’ and still in black figures (currently), he looks the goods here.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 1:  No.1  LOUIS  JANUARY  ($2.20 with Palmerbet)

The Jared Wehlow-trained LOUIS JANUARY is second-up today and with most boxes ticked here, he will take beating in this contest. Last start, the Uncle Mo gelding was fresh off a 16-week break when he beat all but one home in a Class 6 Plate, here over the 1560m trip. He is a front-running type who led that day, but his lack of condition brought him undone, taking home second prize. Ash Butler was aboard for the ride and sticks with him here, where he boasts a 29% success rate with the Wehlow stable. Already a two-time winner when second-up and yet to miss a podium finish at the track, he is ideally drawn in gate two today and looks the testing material in this field.

BEST VALUE 💰

Race 6:  No.5  SHEZABLAST  ($3.70 with Palmerbet)

Eagle Farm galloper SHEZABLAST makes a third visit to Mackay today and will be hoping its third-time lucky as she searches for her maiden win here. Last start, the Spirit Of Boom filly made it a hat-trick of minor placings when she grabbed third prize in a 1400m Maiden at the Townsville track. She came out on the worst side of the leger in a three-horse go to the line that day, beaten a long neck on the line. Nathan Day is in the stirrups today as the three-year-old maps to settle just off the speed from barrier eight. Could today be her day.
