BEST BET 🏆
Race 6: No.9 TELEGRAPH ($5 with Ladbrokes)
The locally-trained TELEGRAPH is in great touch of late and with conditions to suit here, he looks the one to beat today. Last start, the Cable Bay gelding came off a Class 1 win at Port Macquarie when he had no luck in running, but still managed to grab third prize in a BM58 Hcp over 1000m at the same track. He ran his last 600m, 1.5 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best in this field. Back on home soil today, Grant Buckley sticks with him as he gets the gun-run from gate one. If he secures a clear run to the line, he should prove hard to hold out.
NEXT BEST 🥈
Race 7: No.1 MIKADO ($7.50 with Picklebet)
To the feature race of the day and the David Matts-trained MIKADO comes in by far the highest rated runner here and despite the big weight, still looks a genuine winning chance. Last start, the Exceed And Excel gelding scored his second win in four starts this time in when he took out the Beef Week Cup over 1410m at Lismore. Carrying 59kgs, he drew the car park as he jumped from gate 14 (of 14) and settled worse than midfield, three-wide without cover. Ray Spokes got to work on him near the turn and he finished best to claim the winner’s purse on the line. Spokes is now two from two on the five-year-old and if he can carry the big weight today, he has the class to beat these home.
BEST VALUE 💰
Race 5: No.5 THE WAYFARER ($8.30 with BoomBet)
Scone galloper THE WAYFARER makes his Taree debut today and now four starts into this preparation, he should be ready to produce his best here. Last start, the Headwater gelding made the podium for the first time this campaign when he beat all but one home in a BM66 Hcp over 1280m at Muswellbrook. Beaten less than a length that day, he covered the trip, 2.5 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best last start effort here. Aaron Bullock has his second ride on the five-year-old today who should be rock-hard fit and ready to go. A trouble-free run here could see him in the mix at odds today.
