The sprinters take centre stage at Caulfield Racecourse for the Winter Race Day, with the Group Three Sir John Monash Stakes being the feature race on the card at the Melbourne venue.

BEST BET: IN FLIGHT
Race number 8 (Sir John Monash Stakes)
In Flight was in excellent form during the autumn period, recording back-to-back victories at Doomben and Randwick respectively. Her latest success came in a stakes race where she narrowly prevailed ahead of Brudenell.
Her success at Randwick was one of the best of In Flight’s career so far. She got off to a slow start to the contest on ground that was far from ideal for her. Joe Pride’s runner dug in deep in the closing stages of the $200,000 contest to get her nose in front when it mattered.
Pride conceded after his mare’s latest win that he feels the best is still ahead for his sprinter. She should be full of confidence going into this race at Caulfield, and with the ground likely to be in her favour, she is going to take some beating in the latest renewal of the John Monash Stakes.
Cleo Cat represents the biggest danger to In Flight. She has finished second on her last two outings, and she may have to settle for the runner-up spot once again in this 1100m race.
SECOND BEST BET: AZTEC STATE
Race number 9 (Sportsbet Get On Blackbook)
Aztec State goes into the final race at Caulfield on Saturday on a hat-trick. He ended last season with a triumph at Flemington, while on his opening start of the new campaign, he made a winning return at Sandown.
The four-year-old gelding faces 15 other rivals here in a large field, but he looks to be the class runner in the contest. He prevailed with 60kg on his back at Sandown last month, and he can do the same again here, as that run should have sharpened him up.
The draw in barrier 19 will not be a problem for rider David Stackhouse, as he is likely to tuck his horse into the back of the pack and wait for the gaps to appear in the closing stages of the race.

Although he has yet to score in his last five starts, Lim’s Saltoro has put together a consistent stretch of performances. He has been knocking on the door on each of those runs, including last time out at this course when he was second behind Yellow Sam.

As the highest-rated runner in the race, he will need to concede weight to all 11 of his rivals. However, this horse has a lot of ability, and if he produces close to his best, it will take a good one to beat him.
